My biggest peeve!! Hind-site is 20-20 - live and learn (sm)

Posted By: Lisa on 2007-10-24
In Reply to: How would you have handled this situation? - sm

I have been in similar situation is the distant past and not said anything and felt awful later for not saying anything. Now if it involves a child absolutely I will say something. I learned my lesson. I won't let another opportunity like that slip by without voicing my opinion. I figure even if the parent was so bad they ended up hitting me it would be worth it! At least the child hears someone sticking up for him or her (not at the age you saw of coure) and knows that what is happening to them is wrong. I have led small children to their parents in stores, brought them over to their parents in parking lots when they were walking alone, etc. I once found a 3 year old child wandering around my apartment complex (years ago) alone. I asked him to show me where he lived and he did - way, way, way across the complex. His mother would not come out and talk to me but hid in the apartment and just yelled out "okay, thanks." I was in my 20s then - if it was now I would have done more than just take him home - I would speak face to face with them mom and maybe even turn her in. Anyway...got me ranting..sorry...but just learn from this so that next time you know you did the right thing and you won't feel bad. Those children you saw will be talking soon and they will tell mom what is going on. If he doesn't want her to know, it means she will defend them. It is still sad, but it is hard to make a snap decision about what to do if you have never thought something like that through. now you have and next time can be ready to speak up :-)

People in other countries do not chose to learn English, they HAVE to learn it in school
for a period of 8 to 12 years.
That's great! Everyone should learn to cook & learn

pet peeve
I hate walking into a store and  having the salesperson attack me the instant I step foot inside before I even get a chance to glance around, asking if I need help!!!  I HATE that!  It makes me want to turn around and walk right back out.
My Pet Peeve
People who leave their turn signals on while they drive with no intention of turning for miles and miles. Drives me crazy.
Pet peeve of the day

The colon key .  I think it needs it's own key, or at least not to have to shift.  I can't tell you the probably thousands of times i have put a semicolon instead of a colon and had to go back and change it.  Maybe it's just me but I think the colon key and the semicolon should be reversed on the keyboard.

What's your pet peeve today?

Pet peeve
Know what I hate? E-cards! I mean if someone can't bother buying an actual birthday or anniversary card, don't bother sending some lame e-card. I'll stick with the post office on that one.

As far as cell phones, I don't know of ANYONE whose cell is better than their land line! I'd love to get hold of that Verizon Can You Hear Me Now guy - I could drag him around to a dozen areas near me where he wouldn't be hearing anyone!

New pet peeve!
When did hooks for your purse become obsolete in public bathroom stalls even in nice restaurants and hotels? I refuse to place my purse on the floor, so there I squat with purse strap in mouth!
Yield signs have long been a pet peeve of mine. Believe
me, they don't observe them any better here in PA.
That's my biggest

I think that my biggest change is that
I am no longer a people pleaser. If people don't like me as I am, then they don't. I use to do so much stuff to try and make people like me, but not any more.

This is one of my biggest fears! When I saw it on CNN, I thought I was having...

a nightmare!  When I was a little kid one of my uncles said something like some of the bridges in Missouri are so old that pieces fall off with every car that drives across.  Couple that with my fear of water and drowning, I have been afraid of bridges ever since!  To see that awful site on CNN with the bridge collapsing into the Mississippi River with 50 cars on it -- I could feel myself breathing faster and my heart racing!

How horrible for those people on the bridge whose cars went into the water and the school bus with kids just sitting on the piece of broken, hanging bridge.  The parents were probably hysterical with fear and worry!

I've been praying for everyone involved since last night.

Mammograms..From the world's biggest chicken..sm
I've only had the "plate" kind (plastic or something, not glass) and it's really not painful at all.  They don't actually "smash" the plates down on you, the technician slowly compress the plates after positioning. It's more of a moderate pressure feeling. If you take your hand and slowly compress the breast a little firmly that is about what it feels like. It's really not painful, and I'm the world's biggest chicken!!...)))
Biggest Loser voting question
I need to vote, but I can't find where to vote!  Shouldn't that be the first thing you see when you go to the website?  Anybody have a link?  I want Roger to stay because I think Mark has reached the limit of healthy weight loss.  If he keeps competing it is not going to be pretty!  Plus his body and mind start breaking down because he pushes himself too hard.
Extended warranties are the biggest waste - sm,
of money, and the all time scam of the century. The couple times I was d*u*m*b enough to buy one they never, never paid for themselves. I never buy them now, haven't for years and have never had a problem with any of the products I bought that offered them. Believe me the companies that offer them (just about everyone) are laughing all the way to the bank....they take in way more then they ever have to pay out for repair work/replacments, etc.
I think a clean maker can be the biggest factor sm
I have had a Bunn, Mr. Coffee, GE, etc, and the main thing in how my coffee tastes is how clean the maker itself is. I have learned the hard way that it must be cleaned with vinegar or a coffee maker cleaner once a month or the coffee maker will be slow to brew and not have a good taste. Also making sure to check the manual for how much coffee to use - mine states no more than 3/4 Tbsp per 6-ounce cup of coffee even though the coffee itself says 1 Tbsp per serving.
Right, I posted in my 1st comment that the biggest mistake
a cheated-on person can make is to go out and do the same, tit for tat.
Then one loses everything.

Yes, Diana should not have cheated, this made, as you also stated, her position weaker and Charles' stronger and this was the beginning of the end.
Giving up and bringing him to your bed was your biggest mistake -
You are teaching him that you are going to give in to him if he whines a bit. If you will just consistently hold out and not go to him, he will stop it in a few days. I just went through this with my new pekingese. She took about 2 weeks of crate training before she quit whining. I never gave in to her for whatever reason and even if it was time to take her out, I never got her out until she was completely quiet. Now, all I do is tap the box when it is time to go in and she usually goes in completely on her own and she never cries anymore.

Thanks Kokopoo. I feel more encouraged now. My biggest worry is the
hormonal effects. I certainly feel better with the thought that I might be able to fare well with that with vitamin and natural resources. Thanks for sharing your story.
Who'd Have Thought? "Clean" movies biggest winners.

Here's an article that analyzes the revenues earned by movies without foul language, violence, explicit sex or substance abuse compared with those that include these things.  As you can see, depravity loses bigtime.  Good on you, American movie-goers!  You're rewarding decency and punishing filth-peddlers the best way possible - with your dollars.

Love the show but was very aggravated too. The biggest reason I think Marcel is there is because
he is using "gastronomy" (not sure if that is exactly right), but what it boils down to he is using chemicals to increase the flavor in different ways without it affecting the way the food looks, etc.
Anyone sign up and use The Biggest Loser weight loss plan? I am

rapidly adding on pounds sitting here most of the day, but don't have a gym nearby and cant afford to be on the road for an hour 1-way to get to the closest one.  Am sliding down the slope to obesity real quick.  Does the information help you?  Is it worth the $$?  Can this be done without an exercise buddy?

Any replies would help - positive, negative, suggested alternative web-based programs.

My biggest time waster/sucker-upper is work related

If I need to research a word or a procedure and I find a link with downloadable free surgical videos...watch out!  Fascinating stuff and man, you learn a lot when you watch them and it's accompanied by the surgeon talking the watcher through step by step, because then it really gels in your head.

I do most of my shopping on line though, just because the only stores near me are Walmart and Target, which totally don't buy stuff I need around here.  However, sister wouldn't get paid if I did it during work hours, because I spend too much time researching the best deals and always free shipping, so that can take up quite a bit of time.

I do live in Arkansas - my parents live up in Branson so I'm in Missouri quite often!

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm

I have a dilemma.  I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about.  At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food.  This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed.  I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him.  Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him.  Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would  never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously).  I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety.  I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care.  At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment.  Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold?  I know there are lots of animal lovers out there.  What does everyone think??

I'm a live-and-let-live person but had to draw the line

after I found HUGE holes in the walkway between my house and barn.  I thought they were just little mice stealing grain, but then I spotted one and it was a HONKIN RAT!  My poor olderly cat was out there with me at the time and saw it, and he hissed at it and ran away!

I asked for advice on what to do at a local agricultural board, because I have other animals and didn't want to use poison and conventional traps weren't working.  They advised putting a large pale of water out with some seeds floating in it, figuring the rats would go for the seeds and end up drowning.  That was a no-go because the water just froze up solid.  I wound up reluctantly going with Decon because I just can't have my house destroyed.  I haven't had seen any more rats or evidence of them stealing grain, so I'm guessing they have died.  The guy at the grain store promised me the rats would not die in the building and stink the joint up, rather they would crawl off and die outside.  I don't know if I believe that, as it is still winter here and decomposition would be holding off until it warms up.  We'll see, but at least the destruction has been halted.

Good luck and I too say have no mercy, because you just don't need them destroying hour house or causing a spark chewing wires and burnin' the place down.  It is war!

Well, hello, learn something new each day
my daughter came by tonight to eat some collards and black-eyed peas (money and luck here "supposedly" in the south for this next year and darn if she didn’t tell me she has floaters and have had them for years (she is 34). I was talking about asking the people on the MTs if they knew of any treatment. I thought was sorta an older type deal but apparently found something new today.
You sure do learn something new every day in this biz!

We can also learn from...
We can also learn from other countries' histories and examples -- like Turkey. Today, mass demonstrations in Turkey protesting Islamist government influences and demanding secular law. And we can also learn MUCH from England. NY Times reports that Muslim Sharia laws are now in effect in 3 municipalities near London. On the British version of our "Sixty Minutes" show, a local Muslim cleric's response to the interviewer was: "Who SAYS Britain belongs to the English?!" No, the U.S. has the most liberal immigration policies in the world but certainly common sense and fair play should prevail. "Gratitude'' and ''tolerance'' for one's homeland do NOT equal acquiescence to people here illegally. Nor does ''gratitude'' and ''tolerance'' mean simply handing over one's country to those who want to relocate here but then attempt to turn this country into a replica of THEIR birthplace -- with very little return ''tolerance'' for the ways of the natives already here. Yes--natives--People and descendants of people who came here legally, lived, worked, and built this country, generation after generation, and adopted their NEW country's ways. Not insisting that people be ''tolerant''of their attempts to turn their new homeland be a replica of the country they left.
Learn to say NO
I know it's tough when it's your own dad, but hasn't he burnt you enough already? Lock your door and don't answer it. If he catches up to you and asks you to let him hang out or do his laundry, say NO. Enough is enough.

Good luck.

You have to learn to say
no, grow a backbone and. Others only take advantage of you because you are letting them. The children should be helping you out because you have age on you and yet you are being a doormat for them. What would they do if you died? Tell them no way and stick to it, otherwise you have no life to call your own.
Make them live outside? This is so funny! Ours live outside, where they WANT to be. sm
Not all dogs want to be in "indoor" dogs, mind you. They have plenty of space to run around and play, fenced, and if they are brought in during bad weather they whine at the back door to go back out! So before you comment on outside dogs, you really need to get your facts straight. Seriously. Not all dogs are made or want to be inside all of the time.
Learn some Spanish
This whole thread in my opinion has been blown out of proportion. While living in California, I saw an attitude with SOME of the so called minority races who felt that they were "owed something." I was raised in the Midwest, and grew up in a family that did not tolerate prejudice against any race in any way, shape or form. However, as I grew older, I began to see things in the corporate world that were definitely not in the favor of the white American. I for one, have become fed up with calling a company and speaking to a customer service representative from India or elsewhere, who gives a name like "Dave, John or Mike" and you know definitely that is not their name. Plus the fact that they can barely understand English and as a consumer, I cannot understand what they are saying. We have a LOT of older Americans now with computers and the newer technology, and think about them trying to understand someone who can barely speak English.

I am also a relative newcomer to the Miami area and again, as I mentioned before, I was raised in the Midwest, where even the Hispanics and other minorities that I was raised around learned to speak English. If for example, you or I moved to France or Germany, we would be expected to learn to at least speak the language to a certain degree and that is the point that I am trying to make here -- when one moves to America, they need to learn to speak ENGLISH and it should not be the other way around.
She needs to learn about safe sex. Either you SM
discuss this with her or, better yet, see doctor and have her given some form of birth control. I think this is imperative. If she is having sex, I don't think she is going to stop. You somehow have to convince her to act responsibly. Condoms would be the best thing.

I know kids have to learn, but this seems
Hang in there. When my son was 5, he went in a little country store and helped himself to some Skittles. When his dad made him take them back in and explain he had not paid for them, the lady told him "that's okay, you can have them". We could have killed her. HA! We explained to him that this was serious and the lady was being nice, etc. etc. Hang in there and be sure your son realizes this isn't funny, this is serious. If you have to pay the $100, make him pay you back somehow. Good luck.

I think it means you are still willing to learn (sm)
Something I have noticed about being "defined" is that sometimes it gets in the way of learning something new or even correcting old cherished ideas that are really wrong.

I have come to have definite and convictions about things, but it took time and something I still do is draw contrasts with other ideas to see if I still am comfortable thinking the way I do. Some things I have become more sure of, some refined and others discarded.

If I was going to give advice, I would say to keep asking questions about things and when you get answers, analyze whether they really make sense. It sounds like that is already what you do. As you go, you will become more sure about some things you believe now and other things are yet to be discovered.

One more thing I would advise: Keep an open mind and don't discount anyone as possibly having the information you need to find what is right and true.

Yep. Use it to go to PBS and learn grammar and

Learn that you have a responsibility for what you say.

Want to learn how to use taser
I have a husband who travels and I am home alone a lot of the time. I want to buy and learn to use a taser. Does anyone have any information that might be useful for me?
let it out, maybe they can learn from your mistakes

I always wanted to learn
but never had anyone in my family that lived close enough to teach me. My grandma and aunt can do all that, but they live in MA and I'm in GA.

My mom never learned how to sew or cook or anything, but she can farm, fix a car engine, etc. My gram on her side never knew how to do any of those things either, unless you count stitching up wounds (she was a nurse).

But luckily I married into a family full of southern tradition and they are teaching me things like making my own jam, pies from scratch, and yes even sewing once we get moved closer to them!
child can't learn
I got in a hurry and goofed on the family relationships. Anyway, my daughter, her step-gran, and I take turns keeping her after school. My daughter's teenage son also helps with flash cards, alphabet video games, etc. He wants to be a teacher.
Very cool. Learn something new every day!..nm
