Don't use your debit cards
I had a problem with fraud on my account through them. Surely they have fixed it by now, as this was last year and the year before (yes 2 separate occurrences, both at xmas time). So I would not suggest using any cards there but cash only.

I do agree that it seems to be a great idea for teens. Their prices are great and our location has always been helpful with advise, returns, etc.

Another good idea I have found for teenagers is a gift card for restaurants or gas stations. It helps their parents a bit and if they have a girlfriend/boyfriend places like AppleBees or Red Lobster are nice so that they can go on a nice date and not have to worry about $30 for the bill. Even with a part-time job that's a lot of money for a teenager! :) My nephew actually requests it.
Most debit cards can also be used as a charge
card.  If you use it as a charge card you do not have to put in a PIN number.  What happened to your daughter sounds like someone from Bobs took the actual account number information.  I'd confront Bobs mgmt.
Overdraft and Debit Cards
Thank goodness at the bank we use, debit card deductions are the same as checks (I rarely use checks). The overdraft applies to those as well. Luckily I don't use the overdraft often, just glad to know it's there is I need it.
NO more credit cards

I had a credit card with a high balance. I got a second mortage to pay it off. I called the credit card and got the payoff balance and my bank sent a check to them. I kept watching on line to make sure they got it and when they did I noticed that there was a $95 credit. So, I called and said how do I get my money back. They sent me a check and when I got it, I called and closed the account. This was about two weeks ago. Today I get a statement from them with a balance due of $45! Huh??? I called and they keep telling me it is a finance charge. I got pretty steamed and finally ended up saying that I would pay it, but no more. Well, I wrote out the check and put in in the mailbox, but I'm still stewing about this. If I still owed them money, why did they send me a credit?? What is the finance charge on if I had a credit balance? I suppose I will just pay it because they will only keep tacking on even more charges, but it is really bugging me. Has anyone else had any experience with this??

I will say one thing - NO MORE CREDIT CARDS EVER EVER EVER. REALLY. I mean it this time.

I think its credit cards...
The newspaper had an article the day after Christmas how people are defaulting on their credit cards all over the place. This added to the mortgage companies having problems with people unable to pay their balloon payments and the bad housing market, price of gas is sure to lead (the article said) to a recession.
When I was shopping I saw all the people with tons of things in their carts, DVD players, computers, etc. on Christmas eve. This was regular people at Walmart. I saw a lot of credit cards flashed around. Paying minimum payment will cause Christmas to cost tons more and they will be paying beyond the item's life which they purchased.
We went through this. We tried to sell our house, rented to own another and went broke in 3 months. After we had 2 house, fell back on credit cards the interest piled up and it was terrible! We moved back and are on a budget. So, I shopped without credit this year, and you know what? I had more fun. And I have 3 kids. Their things were simpler than the fancy things they got last year. The most expensive things we got were bikes because they are growing and we got those on sale. The rest were creative items. I am not saying that what we did is so great. What I am saying is that peeople are not looking at the big picture these days and if they do not use cash (as we had not in the past), they may not be able to pay their debt if hard times fall. In the meantime, grandpa sent my son 100 bucks, which I let him spend on a train set (I should not have let him do that he is 7) and he cried that his money was all gone and he did not want the train set anymore. I bet if I had him save some of it and had him buy simpler things, well I bet he would not have been crying. At least at age 7 he is learning that money is not easy to come by. And he is learning the hard way because I will not give him more money to replace what he spent. Sorry such a long message. It is just that we did not even afford an XBox, and I wanted a Wii myself, but we avoided all of that because in the end we learned that Christmas is not about credit cards, the junk it buys. I think the end of the cartoon the Grinch where the Who people did not even care about the presents was correct. Maybe we'd be happy with less things and more love. I don't know. This was not meant to be a sermon forgive me. We all have to learn what Christmas means to us and I say let people do what they want, consequences are always result of actions anyway. Just IMO. Happy New Year everyone!
If you are just talking about credit cards sm

If you call your credit card companies, they can set you up with a plan to help. I was in the same boat. Low to no wages and a very large hospital bill, plus household expenses.

I have 5 credit cards. Up until the hospitalization,  I paid on time or paid more than the minimum, as I used to use them for work-related items.

Sadly, all were maxed out during the hospitalization and subsequent rehabilitation.  Of course in the meantime, during the time I couldn't contact them, my interest rates went from 9% to 21-29%.  I didn't know about their programs...a well kept secret.

I'm still hurting, but now my credit rating isn't being dinged and 1 card is back down to 12%.

BUT, you must agree to pay the amount they set for you faithfully every month. If not, you lose the advantage. When you have a little extra, put it on the bill, even if it's only $1.  I have the payments automatically deducted from my checking account. That way, I KNOW they're being made on time as I sometimes don't know one day from the next (if you know what I mean) and if I have extra at the end of the month, I hand write a check to one of them (preferably the highest amount of debt).

Don't need credit counseling. Just work with the companies themselves. It's a pain to make all the calls, but it's worth it.  Good luck.

If you are no longer using credit cards......

i've had several credit cards throughout my time and all but four are paid off.  i don't plan on using the other credit cards ever.  they do show up on my credit report.  i would like to cancel the ones i don't use, but i've heard that it looks back on your credit report.  anyone else have info about this?  i think it's a better idea to cancel the cards you will never use again because of the identity theft going on.

First, avoid credit cards, charging....
Try not to use plastic if you possibly can because you'll never catch up. Don't buy anything you don't absolutely need. Make do with food you can prepare yourself. Don't go out to eat. Don't be afraid to ask for help, not money, but help with children, etc., so you won't get stressed out. Most of all, don't let the kids see you depressed, they feel it and get scared. Google for help, such as making your own Play Doh, recipes, help with just about anything, you would be surprised at what you can find out. Just be careful you don't get involved on the Net with wrong people. I watch CNN or CNBC because I want to know what's going on, you HAVE to know so you'll be aware of changes coming. I don't own stock but I want to know what's going on with the banks, etc., so I can avoid making mistakes. Suze Orman said on one show that you should live happily in a shack rather than over your head. On another program, she stated she was building a new home in South Africa. I used to follow her lead, but now I only listen to her when it comes to paying off credit cards, otherwise she doesn't walk in our proverbial shoes. You have to be informed, even if it hurts. Making lots of mac and cheese. I think a lot of this expensive organic stuff is totally overblown. Don't use Starbucks when McDonalds will do; better yet, don't go there at all, stay home! Just my humble opinion, less is more, family is all that counts, don't scare the kids! Leave your 401 alone, it WILL come back, don't despair, it will repair.
Anyone who resorts to payday loans, credit cards or
paycheck advances should either find a better paying job or a second job. Crazy to borrow money just to live day to day. Don't bother telling me that I don't know how hard it is today to make ends meet....been there, done that then got smarter! What happens when you can't make the payday loan payment, credit card payment or you've taken such an advance on your paycheck it's gone before you get it?
Cancel the ID theft protection on your credit cards.
If you didn’t pay for it, you’re not liable for it.
Credit cards with 0 balance can also negatively affect you -
If you have too much credit line available to you and you apply for a mortgage, they can turn you down because they know you can get your hands on that money quickly and therefore put your debt to income ratio way out of whack and jeopardize your ability to pay your bills. That happened to me once many years ago. I had 2 credit cards with large credit lines, but both had 0 balances. The mortgage company made me close them before they would approve my loan.
Negotiate lower interest rates on your credit cards
It’s worth a shot, and some credit card companies might do it if you’ve been a faithful customer or you threaten to balance transfer to another card.Buy a texting plan for your cell phone. Texting has become unbelievably popular. I have no idea why, because it seems like a pain in the butt, but it’s typically 15 cents for every message you send and receive. This adds up, so better off paying $5 to $10 a month for the add-on plan if you’re addicted to texting.
your kids could make cards, etc...(sm)
draw him as an angel watching over his family or something.

or you might look up angel crafts on the net and find a project they could make and give the family.

I see the posts about the gift cards for supplies for the kids?
I was not aware that teachers use their *own* money for these things? How about something they can enjoy/you know maybe something they can actually enjoy? lol JMO
I like the Dirty Jobs show. Some of the jobs they
show are really quite interesting.
"Food stamps" now are paid on EBT cards - federal EBT cards which look the

She may well have been using her family's federal EBT card and working for the government for a living.

Or, if she is a foster parent, those children will receive state benefits and she could use an EBT card for food assistance.

Everything is not always what it appears to be. I'm sure you're a nice person, right?! See?! We wouldn't know any better if we believed the appearance you have given here! :)

Why does closing a credit card account negatively affect your credit report

Especially when I never use it anyway, and really never wanted it?

With all the bank rearranging going on in the past few months, one of my accounts was tranferred to Bank of America. I was sent new cards and a new agreement, new interest rate etc...

So I called them up and cancelled but before they did, I had to listen to a spiel about how this would negatively affect my credit report.

Huh?? Why is that?

Want to wish you success!
I am also on a diet similar to Adkins and have lost 3 pounds in 2 weeks so you go girl!!  Water or not, it is nice to see the scale move.  My mind is in the game for the long haul and that is what I wanted.  The weight will come off (need to take off about 55 pds).  I cannot exercise much due to other issues but the weight will come off!  Again, good luck!
SUCCESS !!! :D - (sm)
Thanks again for your help. You were right: first turn on water, then power. I just ran my first load, and have just my first load of clean clothes in the dryer (which also works well), all without flooding the apartment, incinerating the clothes or the washer motor, electrocuting myself, or knocking out the power to the entire town. Because of my inherently distrustful nature, though, I WAS prepared for disaster. I had the drain tube weighted down in the sink with a heavy pot, so that it wouldn't jump out of the sink and flood the floor. I kept the slack in the electrical cord up off the floor, just in case. I created a 'floor dam' out of big towels around it, just in case the tub leaked. Finally, I put a wooden stool in front of the washer, so I could stand on it just in case the floor flooded, all he*l broke loose, and I had to somehow get to the cord to disconnect it from the power source without getting myself toasted. Fortunately, none of that extra preparation was needed. I also got online and did my homework about detergents. Good thing I did! Turns out these little mini-guys take only liquid detergent of the 'HE' (high-efficiency), low sudsing type. (I'm SO glad I didn't mistakenly put my regular-sudsing powder into it!) Not only that, but according to my online gurus, the washer only needs one TEASPOON of detergent per load. One teaspoon! Imagine that! One bottle of Wisk or Tide will probably last half a year, at that rate!

So HURRAH! No more trips to that filthy, noisy, total RIP-OFF laundrymat! No more wasted time & gasoline! (Except for when I have to wash heavy things like comforters or blankets, that is, but at least that doesn't have to be done that often, especially with those wonderful, lightweight, sheet-like duvet covers!) I can wash sheets, towels & duvet covers in the washer.

Now, if I could just learn how to fold fitted sheets! (I always try, then finally give up, and wad them up into a corner somewhere.

Used my debit card for everything - sm
but spent too much, about $800 in all. Got overcharged on my gift cards, bought 2 at $50, but got charged for 5.....just got my money back from the offending store on that one, which was quite a fight. They would not even listen to me, filed papers with the bank and sent the company a nasty detailed email to their complaint department, which believe it or not did the trick. My bank did not have to do anything in the end, just kept me informed on what the store was doing, took a week to get it resolved, but got my $164.85 back.
Has anyone had any weight loss success
How about other rx medications?  I am thinking about trying the rx route, wondering if anyone could suggest a particular drug.  Thanks!!!
Anyone have success with Jenny Craig?

I would be interested in hearing your experiences.  Is the food as good as they say?  Val looks great!!!

My rescuing was a success today
I was able to get a mother with her 2 puppies, another puppy and 2 more adult dogs, a total of 5 lives saved. I am working with a lady who rehomes these. I am so pleased with my new "job."
What I have had success with when introducing new cats - sm
Go slowly.  My plan is this:  Put the resident cat in a room alone with what they need for a few hours.  Let the new kitty out to explore the new house with your supervision and lots of praise and support if they need it.  Put the new kitty away and let the resident kitty out to do his thing.  He will smell another cat has been there.  Do NOT let the cats see each other at this point.  Follow this little drill a few times a day.  I would say, based on the age of your cat, to give it about a week before you let them out together and then only with supervision.  You also might only be able to let them out together for a short time each day in order to have some distance from one another.  I would make their interactions a lot of fun with toys and maybe a catnip party!  I have had a dozen cats in my lifetime and done this many times with 100% success.  Let the cats set the pace and do not rush them.  Best wishes to you!
Is there a debit card available where a bank
?
I use a prepaid debit card. sm

My pay is deposited right on the card.  I can also load the card, but it costs $3.50. Its called Real Money.  There is a $5.95 month fee though. To take money out of an ATM costs $1.50 plus whatever the ATM charges.  It also has a bill payer with a lot of merchants already programmed in so you can pay bills online.  The only problem I have with it is that they'll put holds on funds and give the merchant 15 days to claim it before releasing it like if something gets charged twice for instance. One time I tried to buy a money order at the Wal-Mart money order machine and it never gave me my money order but had charged my card. It was for over $200 and they were going to hold it for 30 days! I had to have Wal-Mart fax a release to them. That was a pain.    You have to be careful with some of this prepaid debit cards and read the fine print because some of them have a lot of hidden fees.

My husband and I have had great success with Chantix
Would highly recommend to anyone who really wants to quit - always remember there is no magic pill but with Chantix, this is the best so far they have come out with - we have been smoke free since October and we both smoked heavily for over 30 years.
We always use VRBO and have had huge success with condos...nm

If it was a VISA check/debit card she will get -sm
her money back, don't know about other "brands" though. Someone stole my number from a BJs database and charged about $800 worth of stuff in another state quite far from us, of course the money came right out of our checking account. I went to the bank, filled out a zillion forms and had the all of the money back in 24 hours in a new checking account. That is total bull that she won't get the money back, the bank should guarantee it. One of you should definitely look into it and make some noise so she gets ever penny back.
huh? I have a debit card, not a visa, mastercharge....
and I cannot charge on it - I can only get $$ off it - and use it anywhere they accept debit cards (Walgreen's, etc) but not in dept. stores - only to DEBIT my card - never to charge.  The bank always tries to solicit me with a Visa or Mastercharge debit card and I constantly cut them up and send them back to the bank - I don't want another VISA card (already have three, two of which I never use) and so I ONLY want a bank debit card...WAMU is the bank
That is a great success story! I am really happy to hear that (sm)
someone got out of a really bad situation and worked hard and made it and is now happily married. That's the dream.
This is the reason I refuse to carry a debit card....sm
Most retailers do not require you to use a PIN and there is no security on these things. I've heard of many people like your daughter getting stuck without money for a few days while waiting for the bank to credit them back. Another problem that happens sometimes, including happening to my husband when we were dating was that when we ate out the waiter made an error on the charges to the debit card - charging $440.00 instead of $44.00. The waiter immediately ran the credit and the manager apologized, but the bank still took out the $440 until they received the written confirmation from the restaurant's bank of the error. Fortunately he had the money in his account to cover this error but other people would bounce checks over it. The same thing happened to my mom - an error was made and she was without as much as she should have had for the 3 business days it took to credit her back.

Your daughter should immediately talk to the police department about the fraud and the bank. Good luck straightening it out!
Beware of overdraft protection on debit card though
My son moved into his own place, actually sharing a house with a friend. He got his first checking account and was actually doing well with it.  He actually didn't get any checks and just used his debit card. He and his roommate decided to get cable. Evidently my son signed up for it to be automatically deducted from his checking account, which he says he did not know. That was his responsibility and his mistake obviously. He should have known when they were going to ping his account. Unfortunately, he did not. They deducted for his cable bill, and then he thought he had more in his checking account and used his check card about 12 times in a 2 day time period.. like, for 1 soda for $1.49, or $5.00 of gas.  All of these charges were allowed and were put through but then were charged a $30 fee for each. Finally on the third day, the card was declined and that same day he received the notice of overdrafts in the mail.  Supposedly this is a service the bank offers, which I don't understand, in that they will process your debit like an overdraft and put it through, but then charge you. I totally understand how that is a good thing for checks, as you avoid getting the check charges and bounced checks through the merchants, but when you are using a debit card, shouldn't it just decline it if you don't have enough money in there? It would have tipped him off right away that there was a problem with his account, instead of racking up over $300 in overdraft fees. We've contacted the bank several times, but they will not budge saying that this is "service" they provide and it was explained in the paperwork he received when he opened his account.
Both my mom and aunt have had very good success with it. My mom, smoker for over 40 years, quit cold
turkey and says Chantix is the best drug out there - she tried everything!

I see that there are mixed feelings about this drug as with all drugs. Works for some and doesn't work that well with others. Sorry to hear about their experience!
I have lack of god as you put it, and
I hate to tell you, but you can be a good person and not believe in god. I'm not a criminal because I choose not to be not because I believe in god.

I'm so sick of hearing this kind of thing! I do not judge other people because they believe in god even though it's my opinion that they are wrong. However, all of the preachy people that throw god in my and everyone else's face, claim to be so righteous, etc., they judge me and everyone else. In fact, some of the most uncaring, insensitive, hateful people I have met have been "religious." Believing in god definitely didn't make them a good person.

Why does everything have to be about god with some people? What ever happened to religion being a personal choice and a personal thing between you and whatever you worship? Why do you have to force it on everyone else?

I don't force the fact that I don't believe in god on anyone else. I don't constantly tell them why there is no god and the reasons why I think that, but for some reason it's ok for other people to do the opposite to me and other's like me. What is it, if you hide behind religion it's ok to do/say whatever you want? If that's what having faith gets you, no thanks!
Lack of help from future son-in-law

Please tell me if I'm overreacting.  I'm moving 60 miles away from where I'm now living next weekend for a new job at a big hospital in my hometown.  I'm excited but nervous also.  My daughter is getting married in November.  I only have about 3 rooms of furniture and a lot of it is already boxed and in a storage room.  I asked my daughter if "Bruce," her fiance, and his buddies could help move me, as I am single, with no father, brothers or friends who are able-bodied any longer (I'm 50+).  She asked him and grudgingly he said something to the effect that he could, but we would have load the truck the night before and he would have to be finished up before noon the next day, and his friend would help for $200(!).  The last straw was he told my daughter to tell me not to expect to have boxes, furniture placed or set up, because he HAD to get to the "Mud Bog" by 12:00 sharp.

Is this any way to treat a future in-law?  He knows I don't have any family really.  I did get a couple of co-workers and their husband/brother to help, thank goodness, but I'm really worried about the future with this boy--respect for me, priorities, selfishness--thanks in advance.

Lack of due care goes either way

What to do about lack of pets --

Got a problem...

I had a Pomeranian for 5 years.  Had a cat for 4 months.

Last month I found out I was going to have to move (could not afford the old house any longer) and I found an apartment that would allow me to have my dog.  Then, lo and behold, 2 weeks ago (4 days before I moved), someone stole my dog out of my backyard (no, did not get loose - someone took him).  I canvassed the neighborhood, had the police visit several homes that were possible snatchers, but ended up having to move without finding him.

Well, the landlord would still not allow me to keep the cat even with paying a nice fat animal deposit so today I had to turn him over to the humane society.  My daughter had planned on taking him, but he was just a little too aggressive for the 1 year old granddaughter.

So, now, I am sitting here missing my babies and thinking I am going to have to get another dog.  Obviously I do not have a lot of money to spend on another dog, but I need and want the companionship and the fun that comes along with a dog.  So, some suggestions on what you think would be the best for me to get.

I really love the dogs with all the hair (Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Pekingese, etc), but I also think how nice it would be not to have all the hair all over me and the house.  I also think that a "mutt" might make a good choice, but upon my visit to the humane society today to turn over my cat, there was nothing but big dogs and I had to move into an apartment, so I think that would be too much.

Darn it, I am just lonely and feel like I have lost 2 of my kids right now!

plain and simple, lack of God.

excuse my lack of knowledge, but
I thought medicinal marijuana was legalized in CA some time ago. What a horrible situation, this calls for an uprising, let the power of the people be heard. That is exactly why this stuff is going on - we let it.
sleep, or lack thereof

I read somewhere this past week that Sarah Palin only requires 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night.  I remember in the past reading the same about Jay Leno.  For a long time now I have thought about how much more I could accomplish if I could just get by on less sleep.  I seem to function well with 7 hours and usually that is what I get.

Do you think that the ability to sleep 3 to 4 hours a night and actually function normally and enjoy life is a gift that a person is born with, or do you think it is something that can be learned?  Do you think a person could get 1/2 hour less sleep per night every week, gradually getting used to less and less sleep, and still function well?  Am I the only one who thinks about these things?

Please share your thoughts on this.  Do you know anybody who sleeps so few hours, and what is their quality of life?

Even if I was to try to overcome my lack of desire for him (sm)
He did in one case admit to cheating with a girl he met while fishing from a pier in the Outer Banks. He then denied saying that, but of course he said it. I have children to raise. Should I expose myself to possible diseases? He still has not gone to get tested, so why should I give in to him?
lack of etiquette just means one is a goon....
!!!
I read that a lack of vitamin D and boron can

cause psoriasis.  The article said that a lot of vegetarians don't get psoriasis because they have a diet high in boron which helps with the conversion of vitamin D.  It is because vegetarians eat food high in boron and vitamin D, i.e., veggies, fruit, etc, and the soild the veggies are grown in is high in these nutrients.

There was a post on here about helping psoriasis so I thought I would throw that in!  Hope it helps.

Well, if the shoe fits....her mothering *skills* or lack of
were atrocious. The fact she even had another baby and it was born methadone addicted is atrocious. The way she treated that old man, first off just marrying an 87-year-old crippled man because he was a billionaire(you think if he worked at McDonald's she'd have fallen IN LOVE with him?), and then holding a tape recorder up to him while exposing her breasts to get him to say "I want you to have half my money when I die" was atrocious, and how she then without any embarrassment at all fought HIS BLOOD FAMILY for his money after he was dead was atrocious. Meanwhile she was screwing around with other guys in the old man's bed while he was in the hosital! She was pure white trash and would do anything for money and recognition, so like I said if the shoe fits.... I certainly hope not but would NEVER doubt anything when it comes to that woman. Feel bad that she died but I'm no hypocrite and so I don't change my way of thinking just because someone tragically died, as so many others do......
As you said in post "it just boils down to lack of disipline

Posts speak volumes in lack of trust
people have with their daughters. I have grown daughter so I guess now would be a different ballgame in the fact so many girls feel having sex and making babies at any young age, really young, is par for the course. Just talked with my 30 something daughter a few minutes ago and ran past her and she also thought creepy to keep list of periods. I guess you really have to do that these days though.
For me it is lack of sleep. I also can get them if my lips are chapped and peeling
and I bit at them, I will wake up the next day with a cold sore...I also get them on the rim of my nose and inside my nose(gross I know)and these come from me rubbing my nose too much from allergies!!!! Lysine helps some but I still tend to get them....STRESS, stress, stress!!!
Why wait for dad? When you do that, you imply you are the weaker parent, for lack of
You told him to sit for 4 hours (which I agree was harsh for an 8-yo) and gave in after 30 mins. Say what you mean and mean what you say, or the kids will think you're a pushover. Don't leave dad to be the enforcer, you enforce the rules, otherwise they'll fear dad but not you. Know what I mean?
WIRELESS NETWORK!!!- sounds like you are getting hacked (for lack of a better term)
You need to secure your network. Check outside your home at these times for a strange car. A neighbor with a teenage boy or girl using a wifi connection to access your network getting on a porn or gaming site that bills via a VOIP dial-up It can be done.

you want to make sure they cant access you need to secure your network with passwords and such and turn your router off at night when you go to bed no wireless = no connection.

Hope this helps feel free to email if you need some more info.
