A way to help orphaned children in Africa sm

http://www.godsgoldenacre.org.uk/ - I read a book this weekend called "God's Golden Acre" which is a biography of a woman, Heather Reynolds, who started a program in the South African province of Kwa Zulu-Natal, in the valley of a 1000 hills. She helps children who have been orphaned primarily due to their parents dying of AIDs.  Right now I have children of my own who need me, but when they are adults, if I am physically able, I want to go over and do as much as I can - I am very happy because for the first time, I feel like I know what I am meant to do in this lifetime.  In the meantime, they ask people to donate if they can or at least to make people aware of them by posting the link to their site.  I grew up very hungry, right here in America, and help came from many sources throughout my childhood. I distinctly remember one group of women from a church who came in and literally filled our cabinets with food.  Although the name of this organization is "God's Golden Acre" you don't have to be a Christian to care about these poor children. There are so many of us with so much love to give....this is just one of the many places you can choose from to share yours :-)

Stray animals and an animal lover

On Sunday, I was working when white fur flew by my window.  On further inspection, I see neighbors in front yard observed ~five~ dogs running around the street, from house to house.  I got them into my garage ASAP so none would be hit by a car.  Placed ad in paper fully expected a response by an owner who had left the gate open - but, nothing.

Right now, they are in my backyard.  Three males, two females, all under 10 lbs.  None neutered.  Two of the males are attacking a third, older male.  Separating them has led to one howling in distress in my garage.

In the meantime, my 2 dogs and 2 cats are in distress from this.  I feel so bad as I am now looking at the call to the SPCA and it is hearbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking.  In fact, I am near tears.

I had a vision of us all living reasonably well together until I could find homes with them but I am faced with the realization that it is too much for me and I feel like a failure.  There is an animal rescue group but even they are overwhelmed with stray animals.  In fact, one that I have is a stray that I was fostering and kept as she fit right in.

Same here, only animals and special needs orphan children.

WHAT? Children who kill animals grow up
to kill people, they are sociopoaths and have no conscious. I would lock them away for life.
why does He allow abuse of helpless children/animals?
nm
humans who abuse/kill children and animals
should be eliminated....quietly, and under cover.
Abusive to women, animals - thank goodness there are no children involved. (sm)
get her out of that situation before any more harm comes about.

Youngest daughter once dated a guy and we discovered she was afraid to not be ready on time, to wear something he didn't like, etc. Soon we found out there were bruises on her upper arms and near her breasts. Needless to say, we marched her to the courthouse, got an ex parte. He broke into our house after that when he thought she was home alone, we pressed charges and had that young man paying court costs for quite some time in addition to going to anger management classes.

We were lucky, we got her out before it was too late. He had her emotionally beat down to the point she couldn't stand up on her own. Heaven help those without a support system.
I would do pasta salad (I make mine with Ranch and chicken!)
dip for the chips, cheesecake and some kind of potatoes, maybe on the grill?
stray
I would ask the restaurant owner first just to make sure he is a stray and doesn't live nearby.
Stray

If you cannot keep him, then find him a good home.  I had a Lab show up here about a week after I moved in.  I thought he belonged to someone, and I would let him play during the day with my dog (in my huge fenced backyard, and then pick him up manually and put him out the fence.  He would be back in just 30 minutes.  Well, I named him Bud, and he is here to stay.  I found out that he had been running all over the place until I took him in.  He sleeps on the floor beside my bed.

I have taken in so many animals from racoons, dogs, cats, hawks, opossums, and even had a pet skunk.  I am happy I can provide relief for the critters who cannot take care of themselves.  I know you feel that way too.

Keep on doing such a fine job.  You will be blessed for it.

Stray Dog question
For the last couple of days this stray dog has been coming around. Today he finally let me catch him. He looks like he is probably someone's hog dog, as we live next to 300 acres of woods. I called the people that own the land, because I was told they are the only ones who hunt on it, and they said they aren't missing any dogs.

He's a cute little fella, he's definitely got some pitt in him, so I really don't want to turn him over to animal control because they will just euthanize him probably. He's really skinny and looks like he hasn't eaten in weeks. He was covered in ticks and fleas, so I bathed him and sprayed him down with flea and tick spray and put him out back on my old dogs dog house for now. I would let him in by I have two other dogs and I don't know if he has any diseases or not so I don't want them near him.

There is no way my husband is going to let me keep him. Do you think I should keep trying to find the owner or just try to find him a new home? He's scarred up pretty good and like I said he's skin and bones (I've been calling him Bones :) ). I would feel bad if I gave him away and the owner came looking for him, but I called all the vet clinics and the humane society and no one has reported him missing. I would think if someone was worried they would have at least called the shelter looking for him!

This is the fifth stray we've had show up here since we moved here two years ago. Three I found the owner for and one I kept for a month before giving her to a good home. I don't mind caring for him, but my husband isn't a huge fan of my obsession with orphaned animals LOL.

She was a stray. I did not realize she did not belong to anyone

until after she was pregnant.  We adopted her or she adopted us.  I do plan on getting her fixed.

Hmmm...there never was a stray issue in that city!

Children having children not a new thing, where do you live?
My son, who is now in his early 40s, told me years ago when in high school about all the teenage mothers that were at his school and said they brought the babies to school, and he seemed to think it was like the girls having playdolls like when you were little. This is not new and apparently folks think alright to have their children sans marriage, be it preteens, teens or adults. I guess my years alone do not make me shocked at anything anymore. Others talk about this job being isolated and your post says some of this if you were shocked at what the son said.
I should mention that I am 42, have 2 children and done with having children. nm
nm
You must a) not have children or b) your children are young
I don’t see them as being spoiled- I see lots of kids in the age group of one (30+) who are totally in the me scene, not just the 1 I have- she married and her husband same - a me type person. The other not spoiled but just got nasty when he did not get the money left to me and he thought he should. Just to think, this was my chosen 1 if I had to choose. Oh well, live and let live is the way I see things now.
Just a tip about animals
As I am getting cleaned up from Christmas and heading towards the New Year, thought I would pass on something that I do and if you don't know about it and can do the same, here tis: I get the newspapers each day (along with lots of subscriptions to different magazines), save them up and when I get a big bunch I take them to my local animal shelter. They cut them up and use for bedding for the animals. Pass it on.....
Well at least they like animals...
I'd take them for neighbors over someone who *shoots at* animals, any day!
Animals
Dogs and cats are good! That will be a fun job and animals are so loving and grateful for anything we do. Good choice too since you get free vet care you can get another dog! Or two. You can never have enough dogs. I only have three. I need a bigger house so I can have more dogs! They are our "babies" and are spoiled. I would hate to transcribe without my dogs who sit next to me and "wait" - what have I ever done to deserve this? I just accept it and feel loved.
animals
If she could have someone else feed them honestly it would save her a bunch. The minimum I have seen places charge and I have moved around alot was 16 a night per animal. Sometimes if you can put 2 in the same cage they give you a small discount on one animal per cage.
what we will do for our animals. .
One year my cat just kept jumping up into the middle of the tree. . we came home from work several times with the tree in the floor. . we eventually anchored the tree to the floor AND ceiling. . . as he got older he got calmer. . I'm sad to say last Christmas was his last - he died in January at age 17. . . He was a good friend. .
Yup, just like animals, neither can they. LOL

animals

I would do the samething, have two dogs that I love dearly which one is blind and has lived in the same house since she was a puppy, and still runs into the walls and things. It is so sad to see, so I would never do anything to make it any harder on her.    Bless you for being so caring.

raw animals
The wild animal the dog kills wasn't raised on a factory farm under conditions favorable for salmonella epidemics, and wasn't force-fed antibiotics to cover the many diseases hens get when they live in such tight quarters.

Then again, the raw chicken is actual chicken, rather than "animal digest" or the other euphemisms the pet food industry uses to cover the miserable quality of their food (even the premium brands are just awful).

And just look at how animals
almost always hook up with another animal friend ... even natural enemies.

I guess if you are very social, you can get enough from other people and activities. I get drained too easily and so would rather have my mate than be alone.

how do you know that? Unfortunately animals
cannot tell us how they feel, not before and not after.
Poor animals!
A ''crate'' is just a nice term for a cage. How sad to cage a dog or cat.
You can only try. That is what we did with my son. His stuffed animals SM

were his worst nightmare allergy-wise.

I've had dogs with dry skin, but never were they were that miserable.  I wonder if they make a doggie lotion that could help or if there is some type of herbal remedy like who knows what but some type of oil safe for doggie skin.

I have two black labs now and one puppy Yorkie.  My older black labs gets some dry skin on his belly, but nothing too bad.

Don't give up.  You'll find it!

All animals, pets or not are most definitely
.
Thanks for that one. Animals rule!

What is it with old stinky animals!
My old dog and old horse really do "smell like old people."  They have a funk of their own when compared to the younger animals of same species, even though they are all completely healthy.  I think it's just what happens, the why's and how's though, I am completely clueless about.  I really have an especially soft spot for the ol' senior critters though.

Animals in heaven? NM

social animals
Rodents, rats especially, are very very social animals and are intelligent and desire human contact. I've had 6 diff rats, all are passed away now cause they only last a few years, but they are very playful and will play with you and like to be held, petted and carried around. The more you do that the more friendly they get!

Have fun!
wild animals
My fiance used to live in a subdivision in our small town. . every night, possums and racoons came up on his back deck and looked through the sliding glass door at us while we were watching TV in the living room. . We enjoyed seeing them and sometimes we would put food out for them. .

I have to share this also because I think it is a once in a lifetime thing - yesterday we were walking on my fiance's farm and saw a deer giving birth. . we got to within about 35 yards of it. . We only watched for about 10 minutes because we could tell we were making it very nervous. . I hope they both do okay. .
for my animals -- YES absolutely!
i don't think its a bit crazy to CARE for your animals, and take care of them. Bless your heart!
fostering animals
Does anyone foster animals? I've been thinking of fostering a dog or cat and wonder what exactly is involved.
There are those that believe animals have souls-
I doubt they would find it ridiculous, though I do agree that this whole thread is ridiculous. The OP wanted to start a fire and she got it.
Animals very much desirable,
in your own homes, not running loose in the neighborhood. I have inside pets, they live longer inside anyway.
Like I said, I love most animals and have more than...
my fair share of them including a horse that is losing her teeth and anyone else would put down because it is very expensive to keep her around and very cheap to replace her at this point, but I just can't do it, as she is very healthy. I am just not such a cat person and I really hope that my husband does not bring on home, but if he did, I would expect it to stay outside. Terrible, I know, but that is just the way I am.
Antidepressants help some animals, too.

I do appreciate life and have respect for animals.
I just don't think they should be shoved in my face.

I agree - there are many children in stores who should be taken outside to be handled. However, people are NOT animals.

Unfortunately, most doglovers cannot appreciate this difference.
So even animals help decide our fate???
Where did you read this or learn about this? I've never heard that animals will speak for or against us on judgement day...interesting.  Guess I'm in the clear, I don't do animals, don't own them, don't abuse them, don't like 'em!
You don’t have to love animals, that is not the point
although I find them much more rewarding that most people I know, you have to be really sick to hurt one.
I like how you called your animals *somebody*...that is cute
If *somebody* gets sick on the weekend....

Animals ARE people too!

You sound like a good mother :)
They think like pack animals, not humans. They are
asdf
With the brood of 10 animals here's the list:
DOGS: Shaina, Tiger & Taffy
CATS: Pearl, Hollow, Ember, Ribbon & Samson
RABBIT: Bonnie
BETA FISH: Jacqueline

Vet's name for all of them: Money (just kidding - just seeing if you're paying attention).
Probably Doesn't have animals or a clue
You'd think somebody that doesn't have them would at least know they do have nerve endings and can feel pain and suffering. I cannot get over the selfishness of this person. Makes me ashamed to be a member of the human race, and hopefully a day will come someone who does something this unconscionable will be able to be charged with leaving the scene of an accident. The courts are moving closer and closer to protecting animals in situations like this.

And to whoever said not to call the humane society, for God's sake, WHY? Why NOT call somebody who would help?
I think there are probably more animals in heaven than people, too. (nm)

My animals have spring fever
MY 2 cars, one is 13+ and the other is almost 7 are bugging me along with my dog to play, and just pay some attention to them.  It is nice outside and they sure have the spring bug.  Hard to resist them.  Just took the dog for a long run in the park with another neighbor's puppy and though it would calm her down but now, she bring in her stuffed animals and when I ignore her she will throw them at my chair to get my attention.  So I keep taking 5 to 10 minutes to play and now am behind.  Oh well, it only happens a couple of times a year so gotta enjoy it.   But even the 13 year old is sitting on my desk, which she never does, and playing with my papers, pens, knocking things down and then just looking at me, like "Did I do that."   But it is so nice here in Portland today, up to 60 gotta take advantage as will probably rain tomorrow.
Kids, animals and ghosts (sm)

When we first moved into our home, our then 2 year-old dog had a habit of chasing us and playfully biting our heels, shifting from heel to heel.  One day he did that when there was no one there, chasing his invisible friend all the way to the wall.  I used to feel the presence of someone here all the time. In the middle of the night, every night, for years, I would suddenly feel something hit the mattress at the foot of the bed, like someone would walk by and just pat the mattress hard or jump on it (though they couldn't have been very heavy). My son when he became able to talk asked me, "who is that white guy who comes in here at night?"  This house was built in 1959, the man who built it died in the yard next door, building his daughter's house.  His wife lived here for many years after that and passed away in the hospital about a year before we moved in.

I never felt there was any malicious spirit here but it still disturbed me some.  One day I walked around he entire house, step by step, carrying a Bible saying, "this house belongs to God in Jesus' name."  I also felt the presence of something in the hall and I told it to leave this house, felt it stayed, and said in a very firm voice, "NOW!"  I never felt anything hit the bed again, haven't felt any more odd presences, and my children have never said anything else nor are they afraid at night. They sleep with me sometimes when my husband is out of town, just because they want to, but not because they are scared.  I spent my whole childhood being afraid of ghosts....glad they don't have to feel that way.

God doesn't judge animals.

I don't judge animals.  Animals don't know right from wrong.  They are merely animals and they act on instinct.  If an animal possesses an instinct to kill a human when there is no threat, then that animal should be put down.  The life of a human is infinitely more valuable than the life of an animal.  Somehow it doesn't seem like you believe that.
