Google Dana Farber in Boston. They have a gift shop there. This may come in handy later when she starts chemo/radiation. For now, I would keep it light, perhaps a Women's Magazine that won't mention cancer, i.e., Martha Stewart, Real Simple. If she's having radiation, they are fussy about what kinds of creams, etc., so stay away from that. Gift certificates for pick-up by her family, hard candy, word search books, movie rental gift certificates. I would keep it upbeat for now and later when she starts treatment, she may need turbans, etc., that's when the web sites will come in handy. Think positive, a little angel something or other would be nice. And stay away from the "if there is anything I can do" stuff, just "do it." Sounds like you are doing just that. God bless you for it!
Bath and Body Works gift certificate or basket can't go wrong for a girl. sm
i made a basket for my brother one year. i had no clue either, but he seemed to really like it. i did a "night at the movie" theme. filled the basket with snack things since all men i know like to snack, lol. i put in there popcorn, pringles, candy bars, fudge, drinks, gift certificates to Blockbuster, etc. men also like games like checkers, chess, dominoes, poker, etc so maybe a nice poker set or something?
Thank you! Now, Gift ideas?
The 20th anniversary is China. We love Chinese take-out and actucally our dining room is done in a Chinese theme. I promise you it is not "over the top". It is so suttle we still need a few decorative pieces. I tought that whatever I give him, if it will fit, I would put it in a Chinese take-out container. He wouldn't understand it until I explained it, but would then really appreciate the sentiment.

Any ideas for a coach's gift?

Soccer season is over in a month (U8) and I'm team mom so wanted to come up with a coach's gift.  I know there are the standard team plaques, etc but I'd really like to get him something different.  He's an awesome coach.  The other parents haven't really come up with any ideas but are willing to split the cost of something within reason.

Any ideas??

Housewarming gift ideas?
I know homes are personal so I'm not sure if anyone can help in a generic sort of sense, but I guess is there anything as a new homeowner you would have like to have gotten?

My sister just bought a house back home and since I currently live across the country and cant be there for her housewarming party I wanted to get her something that would be useful.

She has all her basics as she has lived in her own apartment before she bought the house...

Any ideas?

I hate getting her a gift certificate, even though that's what she said would be totally fine...
Need gift ideas quick for my sister-in-law!
She is a huge wine lover and drinks mostly red wine. I had ordered her a wine bottle cooler that cools the wine quickly, because I thought she drank white wine sometimes as well. I just found out from my brother that it is only rarely that she drinks white wine and that most of her friends drink red wine too so the wine bottle cooler may not come in handy for entertaining very often. The cooler is already en route to my house, so now I am trying to think of something else to get her. She is very connected with her Spanish heritage, and she has extremely good taste in home decorating. She has almost everything she needs already, but any ideas would be most appreciated! Thanks!

Need $3-$5 gift ideas for junior high age kids

I know it's not much to spend, but I didn't make the rules about this gift exchange.  Need something that would work for boys and girls.  I was hoping to be a little more creative than Mickey D's certificates.  Thanks for the ideas.  It's greatly appreciated.  :>)

Looking for ideas for Mother's Day gift for a wonderful friend - sm
She is not my mother (she is old enough to be), but she is such a wonderful friend I wanted to let her know how special she is.  Is it even appropriate to give her a gift on Mother's Day if she is not my mother??  She is a very young and vibrant 65.  I know someone can help point me in the right direction!  Thank you so much!

Any ideas on a gift for my daughter's 16th birthday?? I have been asking her for weeks and she -s

really hasn't given me any ideas.  She does not want a class ring now (she is a sophomore this year).  She does not like her birthstone but does like pearls and emeralds but has not really given me a straight answer as to whether she would prefer a ring, earrings or a necklace.  She plays a lot of sports so I am not sure she will be able to keep track of nice jewelry either and I really don't want to spend good $$ if she might lose it.  I only have a week left and wanted to get her something special because it is her 16th but just can't come up with anything nor can I get her to give me a good idea.  Thanks.

A few of us chip in, buy a lovely woven basket with gingham trim and buy tiny clothes pins at the dollar store. Then buy different size clothing because they outgrow so much. Buy a clothesline at the dollar store, remove wrapping from all, onesies, bibs, nightgowns, PJ's, whatever, leave the wrappers and slips in the bottom of the basket, hang the items on a clothesline and gently place the items on the clothes line, cover over with a receiving blanket, put a clothespin on the end of the clothes line, stick it out from under the covering item with a little "pull me" sign, then when she tugs on the line all the items come out and brings lots of oohs and ah's. It works and it's fun. Use neutral colors if you don't know the baby's sex.
I usually buy a bathtub or basket...sm
and fill it with baby advil, tylenol, anbesol, wipes, diapers, one of those things you put your bottles and cups in for the dishwasher, a couple of cheap teething toys, baby washcloths, spoons, pacifiers, socks. Sippy cups, bowls with lids. It is all pretty little stuff, but it is practical stuff they will use. Then I try to get a little candle or scented lotion for mommy. I like the idea of a restaurant giftcard or a walmart card so they can get what they need. Have fun with it!
It is a Easter basket. She deserves one.

I am really glad the got her an Easter basket. sm
why in the world should she have to defer to her birthday?  It is a totally different thing.
I got an Easter basket up to 16 or so, loved it - sm
yes, I know it was from my parents, but it was still fun every year. My mom knew Easter was my favorite holiday and didn't begrudge me a basket because I was too old. I'd ask her next time if she would still like to get a basket or not, I think her mom would be surprised by the answer. As for the teeth, as long as she brushes properly cavities should not be an issue. If she has not yet had enamal painted on her back teeth your daughter should talk to the dentist. They now paint the back teeth with an enamal, cure it with UV light and it seals the back teeth from getting cavities. Costs me aboutr $34 a tooth but worth every penny. I've paid about $225 between my 2 to have it done. Think its a wonderful idea. My 1 has had 3 cavities (she's 8) but 2 were on baby teeth; the other one has none (7). --As for the competition that is hard to quash, my DH does it to me and we are married. He wants the kids to "like" him. It is a pain in the butt and I deal with it the best I can but I don't overly worry about it. I have good kids who listen to me and that is what counts.

Puppy eating cat food, cats eating puppy food...
So I have three cats and a five month old puppy.

Cats eat Felidae, Puppy eats Canidae... or at least that is how it is supposed to be.

Both species eat mainly dry, but puppy gets wet at night when she is in "her room" (kitties do not go in puppy's room at night).

I cannot keep kitties out of Candiae and I cannot keep puppy out of Felidae

Can I relax or is this going to hurt either of them?

Advice very much appreciated!

TIA

Puppy ... maybe
The plan was to have just one dog, our Sasha, the nice, healthy, solid white rescued Siberian husky. She has been enjoying being treated like a queen for the last week, even though one night she did start acting oddly, sniffing surfaces, as if searching the house for any sign of Misha. Though she knows perfectly well because I let her smell Misha's collar and told her she was gone. I could tell she knew what I meant.

But I couldn't help looking at rescues and SPCA and even a nearby breeder who has had Siberians who won best of breed at Westmister. It wasn't just me who was filling out applications ... DH did it too. And he heard from a Siberian rescuer in West Virginia who had a call from a lady who needs to rehome her 7-month-old Siberian puppy because she was forced to move into an apartment, and it's not good for the puppy. And she is beautiful! Her face is open and Kodiak-bear like, just like Misha's was. And if I get her I'm going to carry her everywhere as long as I can ... because she's still a little bit puppy at 7 months, and they grow up so fast.

your puppy
If you Google home-made dog foods, there are lots of recipes you can try that might be gentle on his stomach. Being a puppy, he is probably sensitive to a lot of additives. Good luck, I hope you find something gentle that he can digest until he gets a bit older.
We have a new puppy!! sm

We got the sweetest little puppy this weekend! We were going to just foster her until she got a little bigger and stronger, but she is doing so well in the first two days with us..and all the other dogs like her..so we decided to keep her. She is a baby basset hound. She was the runt out of 13 and only weighs 2 pounds at eight weeks old. All of her brothers and sisters got homes and she was left behind. She quit eating and drinking and just cried all the time. We brought her home and she has been eating and drinking and her little tail never quits wagging. Sure makes ya feel good to see her thriving now after just two days!! We now have a cat, a mutt, a cocker spaniel, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, and now her. They are all doing well together and nobody is being mean to her..so keep your fingers crossed!  All of our animals are boys and this little one is a girl. The boys are fixed and she will have to get it to when she gets older, so hopefully they can all behave!

Thanks for listening...just had to share!

Got my new puppy!!!

I posted last week about a new puppy to replace my dog that was stolen.  Well, I got lucky enough to get a full-blooded pekingese for free!  She is 14 weeks old and so sweet...   We named her Remy (all our dogs are named after a brown liquor - my husband's insistence!!!).

She is not too happy with trying to crate break her  and she threw up last night 5 times in my car and twice after I got home (car sick or overate on the new food the lady fed her yesterday), but today things are going good!

Wish me luck with the training...

YEAH....

Poor Puppy--sm
Wow. I feel so bad for the puppy (I call all doggies puppies no matter what size or age they are). I did not realize that pets could get or have SLE. I wish you the best for finding something to control symptoms. give puppy a pet for me too.
Your sweet puppy
I'm so very sorry for your loss. It's so difficult to loose someone we love.  Have you ever heard of the site, I believe it's called Rainbow's Bridge, the place where our beloved pets pass after they've left us?  Please visit the site and register your baby....perhaps it will make you feel just a bit better after you do and be sure to read the poem...
update on my puppy

Thanks to all of you, who are concerned. Took her to vets, they gave her a treatment for Coccydia (spelling?) some kind of bacteria in intestinal tract. They squirted something in her mouth that looked like tooth paste. So hopefully this helps.  I'm taking her back in a week for a recheck. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. She is 4 months old, so she had her vaccinations for parvo already.

And thanks to everyone for posting the recalled pet food links. I did check out the food that I feed my animals when this first happened and I've been keeping up to date on this. So far none of the foods I feed are on the list. But I'm still a little leery about pet foods. I'm looking into cooking for the dogs. Got a doggie cookbook. Thanks everyone for being so caring!

Puppy mills

Just wanted to relay a story about my friend's dog, who came from a pupy mill. Her name is now Lisel, as my friend is German. She named her after the little girl in the Sound of Music.

Lisel was born in a puppy mill and fortunately for her she was finally adopted by my wonderful German friend, Ute. Ute and Joe are animal loving people and have had everything including many, many dogs, cats, horses, parrot, a goat, etc. Lisel had four homes before Ute adopted her from Daschund Rescue. She is a beautiful Wire-haired Daschund. Resue told Ute that this dog, who was initially named Zoie  was a real problem for people and terribly hard to handle. Each time she was adopted it in failure and her return to Rescue.

Ute learned the history of Lisel's birth and life before she ever had a home. She was born in a puppy mill, and even after four homes and then being loved at Daschund Rescue she would literally scream when you approached. her. She was afraid of Ute's legs when they walked, and she would not permit her to go near her ears, neck and head. Hang in there. There is a happy ending.

Ute investigated and learned some of the practices going on such as just yanking them out of their wire crates by the ears and neck, and when they spirit moved them to clean the cages at all the animals were often not removed. The operator of the puppy mill took hoses with much pressure and just sprayed the cage with the dogs still inside. The list goes on and on.

I am happy to say that after almost a year my friend said that Lisel is playing on their beautiful propery in the country, running with her little brother and sister, Willie and Ali (both short-haired Daschund) and chasing bunnies and all kinds of fun things. She said she actually looks like she is smiling. I cried when I met her because I wanted her to love me like Willie and Ali do. Ute and Joe said to be patient, that it would happen eventually. She is a beautiful, wonderful dog who found the pot of gold. Ute and Joe refer to her as their Forever Baby. They did not give up, even though many times Ute would email me and tell me she cried the whole morning after trying to deal with Lisel.

We need our elected officials to start addressing some of these issues when they are running for office. I know some progess is being made, but we need much more. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I cried for joy when I read the last email from my devoted wonderful friends.

God Bless Lisel, Ute and Joe.

Puppy Mills
Puppy mills need to be closed down. But as long as people impulse by from pet stores, puppy mills will flourish.

The AKC should not register any dog from a PM. You know this won't happen as there is money to be made from the mills and also back yard breeders.

Sad thing is, the only ones who get hurt are the dogs and their owners.
Puppy mills

I happened upon this very informative link:    http://www.stoppuppymills.org/

and found their videos to be educational and heartbreaking!  No animal, not even animals being raised for consumption, should have to live their entire lives in tiny cages producing babies.  This is the best reason out there not to buy cats or dogs from pet stores or online ads.  If you want a purebred pet, a rescue organization for that breed is the best way to go.  If you still want to purchase a pet from a breeder, find one that's registered with the USDA, or through the American Kennel Club or the Cat Fanciers Association.

My cat acts like a puppy (sm)
He destroys toilet paper, paper towels. He goes into the cupboards and drawers and get into chips and bread and whatever else he can munch!

He will also stand in fron the fridge and MEOW!

I am surprised he doesn't bark........lol
puppy mills

A lot of people don't know about this.  I didn't know until I got my dogs 8 years ago.  I do see a lot of puppy mills getting shut down on Animal Planet, but why the rest of them get to continue is I guess no one reports them.  So if anyone knows of these places they should call their local animal control, which is not great, because sometimes they get put down, but to prevent these animals from living a life of horror, locked in a cage forever.  I missed the first half of the show, I wish I would have seen it just saw the previews which were horrible enough.

Even the local animal shelters are full of purebreeds because some people just bring them there after the puppy or dog they just paid a lot of money for from the pet store doesn't do what they want or chews something up, etc.   Either adopt from the local shelter where the dogs have more than a 50% chance of getting put down, very few get adopted, and the luckier ones are the ones that the rescue groups have already rescued.  They have a better chance of staying alive becasue they were rescued.  So try the shelters first and then go to Petfinder.com to find the breed you want.  The more dogs that get adopted from the shelters, the more room they have to put another one up for adoption.

Also if you have the time, space you can become a foster home for some of these dogs, all the rescue groups need volunteers to take in foster dogs until they can find them a permanent home and get them used to living with a family.  There are so many of them in need.

Everybody that adopts an animal is making a difference, one by one, the more the better.

I like the puppy singing . . .
there ain't no bugs on me. I also like the Avis car commercials, the ones where the car goes on about the owner renting a newer car, the car is all hurt and bitter.
me neither, and I'm no puppy (nm=no message)

Puppy pads. sm
My puppy is now 8 months old but she was pad trained.  You can buy an accessory to hold a frame around the pads so the puppy won't chew them up.  I think they have a scent to encourage puppy to go there.  I have a chihuahua and that works for me; although I do take her out and she has learned it is perfectly fine to go outside too.
Where do you live? I am looking for a lab puppy and
my friend is also looking for a lab. Are they yellow, black, chocolate?

How many boys, girls?

it's a puppy of COURSE it's destructive!
it makes me so sad when people adopt or buy dogs without knowing the responsibility that comes with them. even if she isn't in the "cute puppy stage" anymore. This puppy needs attention, needs exercise, needs play time, and even when those things occur she STILL might be destructive. The puppy needs training (like all dogs). she doesn't need to be on a "run leash" she needs to be taken on a run! i know this is probably better than a shelter, but not much... I have two dogs that i adopted, and they did all those things you mentioned. they are learning and exploring and curious! I did crate my dogs, that is what you have to do when you are not constantly watching them because you cannot discipline a dog AFTER the fact, they do not put two and two together. You have to CATCH them doing it, discipline, and CORRECt. For instance, you catch the pup chewing on the furniture you say NO or whatever to distract them, and then give her a toy she CAN chew on...

Crating is okay. i used to think it was awful, but now that is my dog's little bedrooms. of course you can't keep them in there all the time, please dont... but that is a suggestion for a couple of hours a day...
