Looking for ideas for Mother's Day gift for a wonderful friend - sm

She is not my mother (she is old enough to be), but she is such a wonderful friend I wanted to let her know how special she is.  Is it even appropriate to give her a gift on Mother's Day if she is not my mother??  She is a very young and vibrant 65.  I know someone can help point me in the right direction!  Thank you so much!

Got the most wonderful gift last night

This was actucally a b-day gift but it wasn't ready for my b-day in August.  My step-mother took my teenage kids and secretly had their pictures taken.  I take lots of candids but am really bad about professional pictures so it has been a while.

Looking back to that day now I should have been suspicious but didn't think to much about it at the time.  My daughter was "supposed to be going to work and my "other mother" offered to take her (she works for my parents) and she fixed her hair the way I like it the best, normally she just pulls it back in a ponytail.  When my son  left for work I commented on how nice he looked (he works for my hubby).  The only lie that had to be told was when I called my son at work and my husband said he sent him on an errand.  The rest of the time they were just sneaking around and I was clueless.

Anyway the pics turned out wonderful.  I can't stop looking at them.

What extremely special gifts have any of you recieved?

I got a similar wonderful gift yesterday...sm
My 20-year-old son called to tell me that he took his pre-GED test! He scored the highest in all but two of the areas, so will take a little instruction in those two before the final exam... I knew he could do it!

He's such a great kid, but just couldn't sit himself down in high school to do the work. Even admits now that he could have if he would have wanted to, but just didn't think it was worth it...at that time.

He has always held down a job, though not a great paying one, and has been fairly happy with that. He's never asked us for financial help even though I know he could have used it, but I think he knows that he made his decision to not get his HS diploma and didn't want it to look like he couldn't make it on his own without one.

In any case, I gave up on hounding him to get going on his GED since he has been responsible in all other areas of his life, got a small loan on his own for a car that he could afford and pay back in less than a year(nothing much, believe me, but something he can get to work in), shopped around for his own insurance and got the best deal, and just recently bought a house and is paying a mortgage for less than he can pay rent, so it's not like he's a slacker or can't manage money (he gets that from me! teehee).

I'm as proud of him as I can be for all he has done and knew that he'd do fine with whatever he chose to do with his life, but I can't tell you how happy it makes me that he has taken this step towards getting his GED! I know he doesn't need it now, he's proven that, and I'm sure he even knows that, so that makes it even more special that he's taking the steps to get it anyway. I'm so proud of him!

He said he was going to wait until Christmas to tell me, but couldn't since he did so well on the pre-test and won't take long to go forward with the actual test...

Like you said...what a wonderful gift! And to know that he did it on his own and that he'll benefit from it more than I will makes me even more happy. I LOVE MY KID!
Thank you! Now, Gift ideas?
The 20th anniversary is China. We love Chinese take-out and actucally our dining room is done in a Chinese theme. I promise you it is not "over the top". It is so suttle we still need a few decorative pieces. I tought that whatever I give him, if it will fit, I would put it in a Chinese take-out container. He wouldn't understand it until I explained it, but would then really appreciate the sentiment.

Dad is retired, lives on 20 acres, has 2 horses, drives mom crazy, no hobbies.  Any ideas? - I did get him an electric windshield scraper which will come in handy as they do get snowed in where they are at.  Also thought about a food basket but those items are gone as soon as you eat them (duh! need gift ideas for my husband

He is SO hard to buy for.  I always buy him token clothes, which he needs, but would like to buy him something really special this year.  He doesn't wear jewelry or cologne.  He recently started wearing a watch, but he dug out his old one, so don't need that.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Any ideas for a coach's gift?

Soccer season is over in a month (U8) and I'm team mom so wanted to come up with a coach's gift.  I know there are the standard team plaques, etc but I'd really like to get him something different.  He's an awesome coach.  The other parents haven't really come up with any ideas but are willing to split the cost of something within reason.

Any ideas??

Looking for Christmas gift ideas for
a 14 yo girl and a 17 yo boy.  Any suggestions???
Housewarming gift ideas?
I know homes are personal so I'm not sure if anyone can help in a generic sort of sense, but I guess is there anything as a new homeowner you would have like to have gotten?

My sister just bought a house back home and since I currently live across the country and cant be there for her housewarming party I wanted to get her something that would be useful.

She has all her basics as she has lived in her own apartment before she bought the house...

Any ideas?

I hate getting her a gift certificate, even though that's what she said would be totally fine...
Need gift ideas quick for my sister-in-law!
She is a huge wine lover and drinks mostly red wine. I had ordered her a wine bottle cooler that cools the wine quickly, because I thought she drank white wine sometimes as well. I just found out from my brother that it is only rarely that she drinks white wine and that most of her friends drink red wine too so the wine bottle cooler may not come in handy for entertaining very often. The cooler is already en route to my house, so now I am trying to think of something else to get her. She is very connected with her Spanish heritage, and she has extremely good taste in home decorating. She has almost everything she needs already, but any ideas would be most appreciated! Thanks!

Some puppy gift basket ideas.

2. Leash.
3. Flea collar.
4. Flea powder.
5. Puppy-friendly flea shampoo.
6. Grooming brush.
7. Spray-on coat conditioner. Some come with nice fragrance.
8. Vitamins. They come in liquid and gel forms, usually flavored. Would not recommend pills.
9. Smoked dog bones (I think they are made of cowhide) appropriate for puppy's mouth size.
10. Chewy treats for training. My Shadow loved the cheese and/or bacon flavors.
11. Dog blanket.
12. Food and water bowls.
Gift Ideas for a new police officer? sm

My nephew is graduating from the Police Acad. in a couple of weeks.  Does anyone have any ideas what would be a good gift?  I hate giving money. I did look on line and got some ideas but I thought I would ask to see if anyone has had experience with this.  TIA

mother's day ideas
If you could afford it, I think getting her a gift certificate for a massage and maybe a pedicure/manicure would be nice (hey, treat yourself too while you're at it).  That would give you a nice girls' day out and let her know how much you appreciate her.
Your mother gave you the best gift of all
and that was life.
Looking for gift ideas for massage therapist and hairdresser -
I see the massage therapist every week (my treat to myself!) and the hairdresser about every 6 weeks for a cut.  I really want them to know how  important they are to my well-being, especially my massage therapist.  You all have the best ideas.  Thank you so much!
Need $3-$5 gift ideas for junior high age kids

I know it's not much to spend, but I didn't make the rules about this gift exchange.  Need something that would work for boys and girls.  I was hoping to be a little more creative than Mickey D's certificates.  Thanks for the ideas.  It's greatly appreciated.  :>)

Holiday Gift/Craft Ideas for Elem. Students

Hi.  I need ideas for kids to make gifts (minimal painting, minimal glueing) as they have to be ready to wrap.  What was your favorite keepsate gift from your child so far?

TIA

Any ideas on a gift for my daughter's 16th birthday?? I have been asking her for weeks and she -s

really hasn't given me any ideas.  She does not want a class ring now (she is a sophomore this year).  She does not like her birthstone but does like pearls and emeralds but has not really given me a straight answer as to whether she would prefer a ring, earrings or a necklace.  She plays a lot of sports so I am not sure she will be able to keep track of nice jewelry either and I really don't want to spend good $$ if she might lose it.  I only have a week left and wanted to get her something special because it is her 16th but just can't come up with anything nor can I get her to give me a good idea.  Thanks.

Was it rude for your friend to want expensive gift?
Probably not but just not intelligent for the ones who would feel obligated to get one. A gift is simply that. You buy what YOU want to buy, not what another person wants to receive. A gift is given from the heart, makes no difference about the cost of it. Only someone shallow would worry about whether their gift was good enough.
Gift for friend going through divorce-He cheated and

I am making her a CD of songs about survival and fun songs about stronge woman.  Any suggestions?  Also a gift idea for her when she gets her new appartment.  Thanks

Mother's Friend

I would let my mother handle it. It is her friend and her problem. I know you mean well, but this is one for her to handle. When your mother has had enough she will take care of this. She raised a smart young woman so she is probably quite capable of handling this - maybe just a bit slower to react than you.

I asked a very simple gift for Mother's Day, should have saved my breath
I was going to visit my aunt out of town this weekend and my daughter wanted to go with me. The only thing I asked for Mother's Day was that my daughter behave (she is in her 30s understand) but what I meant was getting along, if I should say anything she might not like to smile and say yes. I just wanted a little peace and quiet but I wasted my breath. She said she felt like she always had to walk on eggshells around me. I told her she does not know me at all, never has and I don’t think she cares about me at all. I have been asked loads of time if she is an only child. She is not but that should tell you what others think, just a me type person. I paid for everything, the gas, the motel, the food, everything and thought I could ask for something that she would not have to spend money on. I am thinking seriously about throwing in the towel on her, just giving up. I am too old to fool with her me type stuff any longer, I really have been thinking about doing just that. A simple request, not 1 that I could not pull off if my mother had asked me to do. The last thing before we got home, I wanted to stop at 1 of my favorite pizza places, get a pizza, we could have called before getting home, could have been ready (left out earlier coming home) and she just wanted to grab something quick, so we got a hamburger. I really do not like her and I am sad because I would like to. It has been impossible for me to really love her like I should.
a friend's b/friend died last year, drank, took vicodin...

Whatever my mother-in-law and mother are cooking--lol
we go to my in-laws for Christmas Eve and usually have ham and kielbasa (we are Polish) and then my mom usually has turkey or roasted chicken on Christmas Day
I agree - a mother is a mother and a daughter is a daughter for life sm
despite the problems they had, which i truly believe stem for anna's drug problems. obviously her mom wasn't too bad or she would not have raised daniel for a while. i think the mother wants her buried in Texas so the grave will be close enough that she can go visit it without having to come up with expenses of going to the bahamas to get there. although i contradict that too in poor anna needs to be buried with her son.
How wonderful
You have a great brother...and he must feel he has a great sister :)

Have a great Thanksgiving!!!

Wonderful!
You have a right to be proud! Lots of teenagers are really caring and so sensible. Speaks loudly of how he was raised. GOOD FOR YOU!
Isn't wonderful to know there are still some wonderful
teenage boys out there. My son just turned 17 and he sounds a lot like your son. He loves so many of our Christmas traditions, but at the same time is a typical teenage boy. My son loves to cook and loves to help decorate, just don't tell anyone.
Wonderful - thanks

That is wonderful - thank you very very much. I am sending to all my family and freinds.
Wonderful! I have all I need and most of what I want.
NM
Wonderful!
Thanks for the tip. I'll have to watch for it.
This is wonderful.

I forget the man's name right off the top of my head, but he has a book about this; ironically enough you can "charge it on your card" to purchase!  So, kind of funny there!  I checked out the book at the library instead, figured out what to do, and still have not gotten around to it.  I need to get it all down on paper, and I've asked for $200.00 a month extra from hubs for what he gives me towards bills (he pays our entire mortgage) and I tend to to take care of the rest.  However, he does put his own gas in the car and treats us for different odds and ends, fast food, movie night, day at the beach, you get the picture...

The only problem I see with this is the way I get paid.  I am an IC.  I only have one online company that truly pays me on time.  My other accounts I bill every other week but they don't always pay right away (could be a week lag sometimes) and another I only get once a month.  Also, the work fluctuates.  So, I may make $1.400.00 a month with one account but if the docs go on vacation, that can bring it down to say $600.00 a month.

So while your plan, I agree, is wonderful and yes it does work, and yes I'm going to give it a try, doesn't always pan out "budget wise" income wise for me personally being an IC and having fluctuating work.  I might add the online company I range anywhere from 14,000 to 20,000 lines a month given the work is there, I work from a pool; no line quotas, and no set schedule.  So, I need to be on my toes to grab the work.  I do have a lot of accounts to choose from, but when I go out twice a week to pick-up work, I am away from the computer, hence losing some of those jobs I could have grabbed.  I check all day long until 11 p.m. to make sure I take all that I can.

Sorry this is so long, but I think that's where I am so "floundering" on this "budget" thing where I am never sure if I'll have "my end of the budget" every month.  I don't have a set income, but I would not trade this profession for anything; been doing it 20 years, and love it and love being at home with the kids (school age), but still...

You tat - how wonderful
When my mom was alive she told my her aunt tried teaching her how to TAT but she would go so fast my mom couldn't keep up. I've got the tatting needle, shuttle and "tatting for beginners" book but I just was never able to get it. I do like to knit, though I have to admit the last time I knitted I was in 4H in school and made slippers.

I do cross stitch too.
Wonderful!
What an amazing testimony to God.
How wonderful, congratulations and wish you the best !!!!...nm

Wonderful news
What great news! I'm so happy to hear that you have a healthy baby. Good luck. It's too bad your first doctor had to scare you like that.
What a Wonderful Person
I wish I knew more people like you. It's too bad that some people are like this, but unfortunately the world is so much different thatit used to be. Keep doing what makes you happy.
Actually he is a wonderful father...
who takes time out of his sleep schedule to be with them, eat dinner with us, go to kids' sporting events and the usual things people do without missing a beat because everything works out for their schedule. People who sleep during the night have no clue how hard it is to sleep during the day when it is light out, loud noises outside like lawnmowers, snowblowers, leafblowers, construction and more than you could realize. Nobody schedules meetings at 1:00 am so you have to get up after a few hours. Going to church on Sunday with your family and having family day requires less sleep because he works Sat. and Sun. night.
I feel sorry for you that you can't have an open mind enough to see that not everybody has the same life, same feelings, same jobs. If I can make him more comfortable including having a dark bedroom then I will and I asked for help in achieving this goal, not to have someone who doesn't know him or our family come on here and insult us. Not once did I say this was something he told me to do or makes me do..I am doing it because I love him. If he gets home in time in the mornings he gets the kids ready for school. Marriage is about give and take.
what a wonderful post. sm
i've never experienced anything you have mentioned, but i think you are a very strong person for what you've been through and turning yourself around.  i'm sorry for what you've been through, but i'm glad that you have the faith to overcome.  just wanted  you to know i was touched by your post.  God bless.
What a wonderful tribute!

Not only to your husband, but also to your daughter for being able to express those feelings to him, and to you for having raised such a loving daughter.

I'm tearing up myself here....

U must be a wonderful person....
to have two such beautiful people in your life. Sounds like you have a great family!
Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. sm
They are making me cry but they are good tears. Note to Lilly- my mother's grandmoter was named Lilly and my mother was especially close to her. If I had another daughter that would be her name.
You Did a Wonderful Thing
There should be more people like you. I'm an animal lover and would have done the same thing. If people can't care for an animal they shouldn't have one. Unfortunately there is so much animal abuse around. I think they need tougher laws. I'll say a prayer that the dog makes it through, but you should be proud of the fact that you took a stand to try and help.
