Down in the Keys....
We vacation in the Florida Keys and/or on Marathon Island every year and without fail we always get at least 1 or 2 resident iguanas.  We feed then salad mix, carrots and apples and they will come down when they see you.  I did not realize that they were pests until I read the news story about then falling out of the trees.  That must be creepy.  I added a pic.  I hope it works!
Keys
I have another child here at home age 14....I work at home.....so if by chance I'm not here.....he is.....so my other son does need a key to my house if HE DOES NOT LIVE HERE.....
keys
DOES NOT NEED!!!
keys
Your 16yo does not want to live with you and your biggest issue is that you want your key?? Maybe that attitude is part of the reason he does not want to live with you and his sister went along with it. I am no pushover, but I can't get my kids to leave. In fact, my son wants to build an apartment over the garage in a few years.

They will always have a key to my house, they are my kids and will always be welcome here whether they live with me or not.
So it's really not about the keys at all?
If you're there all the time, no one needs keys, so what's the difference if he has them or not?

I think you are using the key as some sort of symbol to represent the only thing you have left to hold onto.

I don't want to judge you or your circumstance, but I really think from what you've said regarding your rapport with both your son and your daughter, there is something a little deeper goin' on here, a little more than anyone here might be able to provide insight for.

Again, I'm not trying to judge, but I don't think the keys are the problem.
Keys
It is not about the keys.....the comment that my mom made saying that I was wrong in telling to leave my house key.....and I still say if you do not live in my house.....YOU DO NOT NEED A KEY.....another post was made that I was saying "MY HOUSE"....it is MY HOUSE....nobody pays any bills here except me......
keys
I think you are right about the keys. there is really no need for him to have one. . I also agree about it being your house - some day he will be paying bills and then he will have a house of his own. . I do wonder though, if there could have been another solution where maybe his sister could have helped him out but he would still be living at home with you?? She is probably going to, at some point, have to do some parenting of a teenager and I wonder if she is ready for that??
re running to get keys
to go outside -- if you have to get keys first -- what are you going to do in case of a fire? If you have keyed dead bolts, you ought to leave them in the inside of door for safety.
dented keys
Yep. Dented keys. Actually gored. After 38 years of this, I probably don't have any fingerprints left either. I could go into safe cracking.
Take the keys to the car (& any spares!) and
let her life her life without a car. Dont give in when she wants it back. Tell her to buy her own. I'm sure that after having to work (and to take a bus or a bicycle to get there), she'll start to see what a handicap being car-less is, and what a privilege it is to have one. And if she buys one with her own hard-earned money, she'll begin to realize how generous you had been by letting her use yours.
Keys and kids...ugggg
I cannot count the number of times my son locked his keys in his car or lost his keys.  Sometimes teenagers' head are stuck where the sun doesn't shine.  How he maintains a 4.0 average pre-med, but cannot hold on to his keys is beyond me.  I guess they grow out of it.  When I first got my license, I not only locked my keys in the car, but left it running.  Live and learn.
I had keys to the roof of the bldg....sm

I was given keys to the roof of my building (because I was so chunky I didn't want to do this walking on the street/sidewalks of my complex) and I started by trying to do one entire perimeter of the roof (which is HUGE - like 2 roofs in one, 29 apartments to a floor....HUGE roof (built in the 70s)....

So, I did this everyday until I could do the perimeter of this entire roof 10-15 times - it took 6 weeks to get there *lol*

What I did do was put Tina Turner's cassette into a Walkman (her album called SIMPLY THE BEST) and that, in and of itself, was SO MOTIVATING.

And again, if you saw my other post, I kept counting calories, keeping them to 1000 or under per day.  Sort of like a crash diet.  *laughs*...I had to do this - because I'm diabetic.....among other diagnoses.

Best of luck!!!

Keys - Son - Living with Daughter

However, why post if you were wrong and then defend yourself to the opinions that were posted????  I don't get it.  My parents had an open door policy.  No matter what, they stuck by my decisions.  I moved out twice and moved back in before getting married when apartment life did not work out for whatever reason.  I did not move out when I was 16 though as my parents were responsible for me until I was 18.  Once I turned 18, they still let me move in and out and I also always had a key.  I had a key to the house they lived in, and then I had a key to my Mom's independent living apartment after she sold our family home when our Dad passed away.

I think there are more issues here than you want to admit.  I think if you tried counseling instead of arguing with your son about a key, then you may get to the root of the problem.  The fact that you won't allow him access to your home symbolizes that you don't want him around unless you are home.  You are now telling him that his home is no longer his home by taking the key away.

I think that it is just understood that once one moves out on their own that the original home is not their home, but they are still welcome.  I don't think you want to welcome him into what you are calling your home.

When we bought our first home and had children, we became a team.  We are a family and even though my husband and I pay the bills, we do tell our children that this is "our" home.  They help with chores and that's the best they can do.

I don't want to go on and on, and I'm not bashing you here.  I just think you may want to consider some help from something other than this board. You may want to try a church or a counselor to help you with your teenager.  I'm sure none of us here are saints by no means and we need to support one another here.

My Mom used to say "You are born, but you're not dead yet."  In other words, anyone here can state their opinions on the rearing of their own children, but not until you die can you say "that never happened to me"!  My Mom would say this when I would give judgemental remarks of others.  This was to open my eyes to the fact that the very same thing I am talking about could happen to me!

Lots of luck and love to you!  I certainly hope there is a way to keep an even ground with your son.  Blood is thicker than water...

In case of a fire and no keys
I would go through the window but not in a situation like this, different case altogether.
LOL, can't even tell you how many times I left keys in door (on the outside)
and then spent forever trying to find them inside the house before realizing that, oops I did it again! Arrrrggghh! My husband has found them quite a few times coming in, also! :)
I find it interesting that she LEFT the keys. sm
While going against her mom's wishes and going to the wedding was defiance, the fact that she came to mom's work to tell her she was going, then also left the keys to the car at home with the note (rather than TAKING the car herself to the wedding) says something. For whatever reason it was important for her to go to this wedding, and she obviously weighed the consequence of it.
We have ALL done something we were told not to do, or that was risky, or maybe even illegal, because our reason for doing it was stronger than the consequence...and we were willing to accept that consequence, knowing ahead of time what it was.
I'm not excusing her defiance. But I agree with the poster who suggested the plan of action of getting to the root of her motivation rather than ONLY punishment.
Not only have some of the letters worn off, but I have made dents into the keys. sm
My husband saw my keyboard one time and couldn't use it because he didn't know the location of the missing letters.

why is the space bar on the keyboard so long as opposed to other keys? nm

she's probably in FLORIDA!!!

Yes, it is hot and I am in Florida
I feel the same way, very hot, do not feel like working.
Are you a Florida gal?
Tax free weekend here, too. I'm going shopping!
Hi From Florida

Hi All,

I live in South Florida and I am new to MT Stars.  Anybody else from Florida?

At least in Florida
Arrest records are public record. I can go on my county's website and find out if someone has been arrested and what they've been arrested for.
Yep.Florida had one, wonder if we still have it..
When I moved here 14 years ago it was over 500 bucks per car. We did not know that, my husband was just out of law school. It was another way of saying, Yankee go home. I don't know if I dreamed it or not but I think this may have been changed. Not sure. People who still have it should have a redo of the Boston Tea Party only with car plates. LOL.
in Florida also....no problems with
I have heard of HARTZ causing many problems in animals but not Frontline or Advantage.  You could probably Google this issue to see what they are saying *out there* about these products but personally, myself, and my daughter (who has 3 dogs and 2 cats) have had no problems with these 2 products.  Best of luck to you!
Jacksonville, Florida...

Always something to do and the weather was beautiful...

Florida vacation
There are several things to consider when planning your vacation to the theme parks:  If you stay in Kissimmee you'll have to drive to the parks.  There has been a lot of road construction on southwest side or Orlando.  I don't know if it's completed or not.  The hotels associated with the parks have a lot of extras for the kids so you can relax while they watch movies in the pool, ect.  The rooms are often suites with murals and fun beds for the kids.  There are some that are close to the parks, with shuttles, that might be a bit more affordable than the big ones on the parks.  While you certainly have to go to the Magic Kingdom, especially for the younger kids, if you love the big rides Universal's Islands of Adventure is a must too.  Our kids are into the bigger thrill rides so they prefer Universal.  There's also a nice area for the younger kids at Islands of Adventure that has a Dr Suess theme.  October will still be hot down here, but if you want to take a day trip over to the beach it's best to come before December.  December temperatures are typically fall-like, but it can get down into the 40s on occasion.
hi there - I'm in south florida....sm

and due to the multi-multi ethnic groups here - MULTITUDES of different groups - we have it all in the supermarkets....

You never had chopped liver?  Never eaten chicken livers and onions together just fried up?  Never had chicken livers wrapped in bacon and then cooked?  Ramaki's I think they are called (can't remember)....

The Argentinians I just read eat twice as much beef as Americans....not a good thing...*lol*

Hmm, what does Florida not allowing have to do with ?
Does Florida allow more things then say the rest of the states or something? Please explain.

Hey!

My dad used to take me to a campground that was right on the beach. Of course as I go to write this the name of the place has slipped my mind, I'll have to find out and get back to you. But it wasn't that expensive at all (definitely cheaper than a hotel room or condo) and it was so much fun! There is a park right there and a dock to go fishing on and at night you can catch ghost crabs on the shore!

Hope this is helpful! When I find the name of the place I'll let you know!

I'm in Florida and spend about $175/wk for 5 sm

I'm in Florida, and it is me, my husband, our 2 kids (son 7 and daughter 11), and my father-in-law, and I swear my FIL, who is 5Ǝ" and 158 lbs, eats more than my husband, who is 6Ɖ" and 345 lbs. FIL had to have a feeding tube put in last July, and I had to cut down meals by half because we were having so many leftovers and wasting money. Just when I thought I had it figured out, he was able to get the tube removed, so I'm back to making meals for an army. I just wish I had his metabolism as he just does not seem to gain weight and even had to go on high-calorie Ensure when he had the feeding tube to gain weight. I shudder to think of what my grocery bill will be when my son hits puberty  I don't buy stuff for lunches here at home as we (FIL and I) will just eat a sandwich or leftovers from the fridge

As far as special foods, we don't really buy anything out of the ordinary. I buy frozen vegetables instead of canned unless it is for a recipe, and for a while we were buying meat at a butcher shop but have had to cut that out for now. It was really good but was close to DH's work, and if he couldn't pick it up while he was in the area, it was a 45-minute drive. I cook most things from scratch, except lasagna because I hate making it. Once a month, we have a luncheon at church that I bring a dish and a dessert, and I cook Wednesday night dinner there one night per month, but I get reimbursed for the Wednesday night dinner. I do include paper products and toiletries in with my grocery budget but that's it, and I usually go to Sam's once a month for those.

I have it easy compared to my parents though. My dad got paid once a month, and there were 4 kids at home all the time, 5 when my sister came up during the summer. They used to have 3 grocery carts slap full of food, and my mom figured out that it took something like 18 boxes of cereal to last a month, each one with a date marked on it so we didn't go through them too quickly. And to keep my brother from using a mixing bowl and a serving spoon to eat cereal  We also had a freezer to keep extra bread and other things, and my mom also used to mix in powdered milk when the gallon was half-way gone. I never knew until I was grown, so she definitely blended it well.

When I lived in S. Florida, I heard ..sm
I thought that sort of thing is illegal in this country?

Florida or California beaches
Which ones clearer? Florida as clear as ones in like Jamaica/MExico? What beaches are best for family vacation?
Florida vacation spots
My favorite spot is Santa Rosa Island just on the other side of Pensacola, FL. Although was run out twice due to hurricanes (10 years apart exactly) but was on the last night of vacation. I can also recommend the Iberostar resorts in Mexico - Carmen Del Playa and Cozumel for family - Cancun is more for the young adults/adults. It was actually less to go to Mexico than Florida with an all-inclusive package.

The beach in my hometown in Florida (sm)
I would buy a cheesy little beach cottage and paint it tacky colors and have lots of plants outside and open my own little herbal remedies shop! Haha! That's what I want to do when I'm old and retired!
It was over 90 degrees at 9:30 am in South Florida.

Girls in Florida fighting
Did anyone see that sickening video of those teen girls beating up another girl while two boys stood guard outside the house?  I think they should be tried as adults including the boys (not sure how old they are anyway).
Do you know where in Florida this is? Is it St. Johns River? sm
my mom lives in Florida and if it is in the right location, she would love that!
Anyone watching the story out of Florida sm

about the little girl (Caylee) that's been missing for five weeks and her mom (Caycee) is in jail?  i'm watching the court stuff that's going on.  they are going to decide if she should get bail or not.  i've seen some interviews with Caycee's mom (Cindy) on the news, and she is a witch.  Cindy is on the stand right now and i just think the whole thing seems suspicious.  Cindy claims that Caycee has had this babysitter for three years and used to take Caylee to her and the mom has never once met the babysitter?  i think that sounds weird.

anyway, it's interesting and I sure hope the little girl is still alive.

I'm from Amelia Island, Florida (sm)
If camping is not your thing, you can look up vacation rentals in the area and get great deals on condos and/or hotels during that time. It is located just past the FL/GA line so very North Florida, about 1/2 an hour before Jacksonville. It is a small island, one of Florida's oldest cities, and an old pirate town. The streets are lit up at night downtown with lights in the trees and many of the streets are brick. (Can you tell I love it?) If you are looking for a beach area with more entertainment, such as Ripley's museums, etc., a similar but somewhat busier beach town is St. Augustine, FL. I will try to find the Website I usually use when looking for rentals and post that later in case you are interested. You can get some really good deals this time of year.

car insurance quadruples for teens in florida

it's not *spoiling kids* what with Florida rates, that's a given.......quadruples for kids 25 and under.......check it out yourself....it's not spoiling.  I also moved out at 18 and did it all myself but I didn't drive until I was 26 or 28 so car insurance was never an issue back in the days for me.  Today, it's a different world and car insurance definitely depends on WHERE YOU LIVE.

If you live in very small-town America I suppose what you said is very correct......

I'm in Florida 30 years and those beautiful beaches

There are plenty of beaches in S. Florida where they have found over the many years MEDICAL WASTE DUMPING.  So, no I don't agree that Florida's beaches are all beautiful..........maybe northeast and northwest in the state but certainly not in south florida......

just my take is all........

Jupiter, Florida - one mile to ocean!
And hey, it's for sale! Have different priorities now - so need to downsize.

Hurricanes? Survived 3 direct hits with very little problems - that scare is a bit overblown (pun intended). http://www.move2jupiter.com
*humid* in Florida is putting it VERY mildly....LOL

global warming...I'm in S. Florida and birds

this is NOT normal......been in Florida 30 years and never heard birds in the middle of the night unless one is in the Everglades....and I'm not located there.

Been going on for almost a year.........it's very bizarre to me.

They are not native to Florida; interesting story
as to how they wound up there.

I like it cold for the holidays. Was in Florida last week and...sm
it just did not feel like Christmastime (temps in the 70s--not that I was complaining).  However, I wish the temps here in WA State would get above freezing so that I can get my Christmas/birthday shopping done.  Some roads are still a sheet of ice.  Your 40-50 degrees sound perfect to me.
