What a great idea!

You know, it sounds to me like he was seeking attention by acting out negatively, which is pretty common, especially for children of divorced parents. It's like they are craving attention and will do anything to get some "control" back in their lives because the world as they knew it is gone. I've been there before and I completely understand.

I know that being a single parent can be extremely trying and kids sense insecurity and tend to act out at the worst times. It's great that you're not thinking only of yourself because it's sure easy to take the "stick your head in the sand" route; although, in the long run, it's the most difficult thing to endure.

You're doing a great job parenting, thinking "outside the box".
