it would have been nice for him to say something like, this was my stepdaughter but I loved her as my daughter. That would have been the right way to express it, not leaving her paternal side out as both me (his sister) and my aunt (his aunt) both there as paternal sides of the family. Actually at her age I know she did not like it and said her g-niece's life would probably had been a lot different (and better)if her real father had raised her.
