What's up with gas?

I'm so thankful that gas prices are coming down. They've dropped from over $4 (post-hurricane) to as low as $2.68 in just a couple of weeks. But it's really got me curious about why they're "ABLE" to lower the prices NOW when they've been so high for so long. I haven't seen or heard anything on the news about it at all. Has anyone else heard an explanation? I'm wondering if maybe people found alternative means of transportation so that there's just really a lot less demand now. Has anyone heard that that's what's brought this about?
