Would you say something?

Every Sunday my son attends religious ed classes at our church. The kids' parents all take turns bringing 2 dozen doughnuts to share, and today was my turn.

When he got back in the car after class, I asked him if the doughnuts were all eaten or if there were any leftover. He said they were all eaten and that some kids didn't even get one. I asked how many kids are in his class and he said 18. I told him we brought 24 doughnuts so everyone should have had at least one, and asked him what happened. He said that one girl in the group ate FIVE. I asked if this happens every Sunday and he said yes...she usually eats 4-6 doughnuts at every class. No one has said anything, but "everyone notices."

I think this is concerning for a few reasons. One, I think this child may have some sort of eating problem, like compulsive overeating or something...I don't think eating a half a dozen doughnuts is necessarily normal, especially when it is occurring every single Sunday, and especially when you're preventing others in your group from having any. Two, that is really unhealthy, generally speaking, from a nutritional standpoint. Three, it's unfair to the others in the group when her eating so many is preventing others from having even one. These classes are going to last through May, so I anticipate this could well become a peer issue for her with this group of kids if this continues.

I asked DS if he thought I should say something to the girl's mother and talk with her about this (not something I am anxious to do) and he begged me not to. Part of me feels like her mother needs to know this is happening...and part of me wants nothing to do with it.

Would you say something? If so - what would you say?

And, to put the shoe on the other foot: if this were your child doing this, would you want to know?
