I was wondering why Richard looked the same age with young Ben myself!! I agree with your take on Jacob and the smoke. That does make sense. If the island healed Locke's parlysis, it should be able to heal his wound. He became too important of a character to just dump off like that. I think Ben is threatened by him and that was the only reason to kill him. And why is Ben in charge of this "medical research" when he obviously did not get a college education? He is just one big mystery!!
