Check out Veterinary Pet Insurance. I recommend them. My Siberian Husky had Cushings. Unfortunately I didn't have pet insurance for her, but it would have been covered if I had. And yes, it did cost a fortune, so I know what you mean. But she was worth every penny. I still miss her...
