Camping

We are going camping soon.  This is a relatively new vacation thing we have been doing because it is much less than spending time in a hotel and allows the kids to meet new people and be forced to use creativity and imagination.  Does anyone have any good tips, tricks, or hints?  Or some good meal recipes for something other than the usual kabobs, hamburger/hot dogs and such?

Nachos are my bright idea for this time.  I think I can do all the prep work at home and then just put them together in a foil pan and reheat over the campfire.

If camping sounds okay to you try going to floridacamping.com as they have the amenities you can choose from and an area map so you can see where you might like to stay.  We just had a vacation to the Destin/Panama Beach area in June and it wasn't too hot just yet.  There is a camping site in Panama Beach and I think it is called Campers Inn.  They were across the street from the beach, but had direct beach access.  Enjoy planning your trip!

OP says nothing about vacation just camping.

I never understood why people like camping.

Maybe it's because I've always been a working-poor hick and every day life is kinda sorta like camping...

If I could do it, I'd take luxury accomodations all the way, baby.  Plush furniture, gourmet meals, never-ending hot showers, room service, and NO CHORES!

I couldn't even fathom wanting to scrounge around for firewood, finding potable water, pooping in the woods, swatting at bugs, worrying about what's gonna camp out in your sleeping bag with you...ugh!  Call me a pussy, but that's just me!

People say I'm strange, but my $ goes to camping gear.
I love the wilderness, backpacking, kayaking, hiking, etc. This past weekend I had a wonderful backpacking trip. I was walking through a cloud of bright green ferns and blueberry meadows, and I loved it. Don't get me wrong! I love a good hotel, too! But I'm best recharged by a walk in the woods. Oh, yeah! And movies, music, and podcasts. I can't live without my iPod!
You need to look closer at this....it is

Oh and look closer...we do not have the same scripture on our posts....but you can put any scripture you want on yours...just get it right out of the bible...

God bless! :)
I was closer....
to my mom because she was a SAHM.  We fought more but that is because we were around each other more.  My dad worked a lot and worked second shift and so I only saw him on the weekends.  I got along with both of them for the most part, but was closer to mom.  When I moved out, I got pretty close to both of them until my dad passed away last year.  I'm really close to mom now.
Google camping recipes......TONS of stuff

PS: To see something funny, take a closer look
My bedroom is VERY tiny. And I wanted this big desk. So, I got myself a loft-bed. I LOVE my bed!!! (And of course, so do the kitties). It's over 7 feet tall... got it on Craigslist from a newly-graduated college student. See my phone on the far right corner of my desk? Well, when up up in that tall bed at night, and the phone rings, it's impossible to climb down from that height in time to grab the phone.
Sooo, I rubber-banded a string to the receiver, and ran the string up to the railing at the top of the bed. When the phone rings, I just pull the receiver up by the string in order to answer it. Also comes in handy when it's cold in the winter and you don't want to get out of bed!

Where there's a will to be lazy, there is always a way!
STOP!!!! BETTER TAKE A CLOSER LOOK
This is what I found when researching this:

Just Wondering asked the question; Do the Heat Surge Fireless Flame heaters that the Amish sell really work?
It is being advertised in the local paper (The Herald-Dispatch,Huntingto n , WV ). That it is a Miracle Heater. Saves Money: uses less energy than a coffee maker. Stay really warm and slash your heating bill all at the same time. It uses 1500 watts. It is 5119 btu. My question is. Is this really a Miracle Heater? Should I buy one for every room in my house and turn off the heat pump?

The ads (which are all over the country) are very misleading.

1. A coffee maker uses a large amount of electricity for about a minute. It's true that the so-called "miracle" heater uses less electricity than a coffee maker DURING THAT ONE MINUTE. But you're going to have the heater running for a lot longer than one minute a day. So it's going to cost you a lot more to operate than a coffee maker does.

The heater will cost you around 12 cents per hour to operate. The average cost of electricity in the U.S. is 8 cents per 1,000 watts per hour, so 1,500 watts costs 12 cents per hour on average. This is true for ANY 1,500 watt electric heater.

2. The ads say that the heater produces an "amazing" 5,119 BTU (a measure of heat energy), but ALL 1,500 watt electric heaters produce 5,119 BTU. If an electric heater was 100% efficient, it would convert 1,500 watts of electricity into 5,120 BTU of heat. All electric heaters are nearly 100% efficient, and this has been true for decades. The "miracle" heater is no more efficient than any other electric heater.

3. The website of the heater's manufacturer (Heat Surge, a company in Ohio that has nothing to do with the Amish) is much more honest than the ads. It states clearly that the way the heater saves you money is if you turn off your central heat, buy one heater, use it to heat one room at a time, and move the heater from room to room as you move around. This is called "zone heating." See the Saves Money section of the website (www.heatsurge.com).

This is true, but it's also true for ANY electric heater. The problem is that a lot of people don't like to have just one room of their house warm while all the others are cold.

You DON'T want to heat your entire house by putting an electric heater in each room. That would cost you far more than central heat. Gas central heat, for example, would cost around half as much as having an electric heater in each room. (The exact amount varies depending on what part of the country you live in.)

If you want to get one heater and move it around with you, that would be cheaper than central heat, but you can get a lightweight 1,500 watt / 5,119 BTU electric heater with a fan for under $100 at your local hardware store, while the "miracle" heater costs $350 including shipping. The heater at your local hardware store won't have the Amish-made mantle and the fake flames, but it will work just as well. Make sure to get one with a fan, since it will warm up the room faster, although fans can be noisy.

I have several trips planned
I am going to Washington with a group in September. They are also planning a trip either to Italy or Alaska, either would be AOK with me. I told hubby if he wants to take a 3-4 day trip to Vegas we could do that and finally if the Italy/Alaska trip fell through, I would go to the Canadian Rockies myself meeting up to tour with a group. I love traveling!!!
Two trips this year...sm
Going to see my best friend in Oklahoma City in July (son will be at church came in the same area at that time).  In November, we will be going to a family reunion in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Nothing really big, since money is so tight right now.  Shoot, I'm hoping we will have enough to go on those two road trips.

Now I know why I went on all those exotic beach trips
when I was younger. My father used to fuss and fuss at me- I was traveling to the Carribean, Mexico, etc and he wondered why did I not visit the good ole USA. Now if only he were still here I could tell him. Now I am into visiting places that do not have the beach included- so glad I did those in my earlier years- did not mind showing those legs then!
I actually agree with you on that. I have taken trips by plane and bus alone and met really
interesting people actually more interesting than the people I go with sometimes.  I just have never driven alone somewhere with no one to talk to on the road, etc.  Just wondering about that part of it.
Yes...he tells me he is on fishing trips and that (sm)
there is no cell service there, so I can't call him, or reach him even if there was an emergency. And he does not call to check on us either.
I call my M mother - but I was always closer to my GM I called her MoMo
which when I got older I was told that I actually started off calling my GM momma and she taught me to call her momo instead and tried to get me to call my M mommy but I never have felt comfortable with it and have always called her Mother even though my siblings all call her mom. However my children call me Mom unless my daughter wants something really big or she is really upset then it's mommy. My daughter refers to her biological as her father and SF as daddy and the toddler has dadadaddadada and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmme lol
garden, fewer trips to the store - sm
Watching the sale papers for really good deals and planning meals around those. Safeway and Albertsons usually have a few 10 for $10 sales every week. I will max out those sales on a couple items if we use a lot of them.

Trying to stretch a gallon of milk is getting more expensive too. Powdered milk is skyrocketing along with everything else but it still does make a gallon last a little longer so will keep doing that. We go through at least a gallon a day, sometimes more.

Telling the kids that I am not the local taxi service for their friends and cannot provide them transportation here and there all the time. My own kids will have to work harder to combine their schedules to cut back on needless trips too.

If one is one place and another somewhere else, I will only drop off or pick up ONCE.

Used to be that the kids would have me running 4-5 trips a day. No more. If they can't leave or be picked up at the same time, too bad.
Several 2 and 3 day trips and DH and I take all of May off and drive cross country...can't wait!

Gas prices hinder my trips, nope, got 3 planned for this year
Had planned 1 by air about 3 months ago and 2 others by chartered bus the end of the year so nope, prices are not hindering my traveling.
Heck no!! In fact just bought a GMC Yukon Denali to haul the family around in for trips.

Anyone move from a single family home to mobile home? sm

I own and live in a house in a midwest city in a bad neighborhood (wasn't that bad 11 years ago).  I spent the day waiting for the plumber to come and jackhammer the foundation (slab house, no basement) to find a leaky pipe that is flooding my DD's bedroom. Last week, it was the electrician with quotes for costly repairs.

In the meantime, I've really been thinking about selling out and moving into a mobile home.  Has anyone done this before?  Is a mobile home in a decent park less of a hassle than a regular house?  I'm so tired of cutting the grass and spending $$ to fix things and tired of old flooring and cabinets, etc., that are just too costly to replace.  I'm single with no man to do these things for me and I can't afford a mortgage on a newer house in a good neighborhood.  Some of the pictures I've seen of the mobile homes look really nice and modern on the inside.

Any advice and comments appreciated.  Thanks!

Well I figure I can make my own hours & be home when the kids are home (sm)
I worked PT in an office for a while but spent most of my money on childcare in the summer. Full-time in an office was just a nightmare and I felt like I missed a whole year of my children's lives. I want to be in control of my schedule so that's why I'm looking into the cleaning thing. Never thought I would want to do that but live and learn! Some of the most intelligent people alive work as carpenters and similar things because they have learned what's really important in life. Whew....off my soapbox now :-) Good luck to you!
Daniel had a home, a very good home...
with someone in my family at one point.

She met her late husband at a club down the freeway from me. It's not a fancy place, like you say.

She does have a real brother though. That was the connection on our part.

I agree, though. It is sad that all this is coming out the way it is. I believe she was a good person...she just had a lot of problems, mainly drugs. What is really sad is that all of this is going to be seen by her daughter one day when she grows up.
It is next weekend...nm

Weekend
Luckily I'm off weekends. We went to an early dinner with friends yesterday, and I spent the rest of the day reading for once in I don't know how many years. Also went to the mall. Today we went to church came home and one of the teenage boys in the neighorhood had an Easter egg hunt for the little kids in the neighborhood. Tonight a friend came over the we watched the latest James Bond movie. Now it's off to bed for a busy 4 days of work next week. I'm off Good Friday. I hope everyone has a good week.
What I did this weekend
I worked Sat a.m., then had hair cut - mine was looking like something could have been living in it. Then it was grocery shopping and came home, cleaned and discussed about whether or not we'd move and where to and watched a movie. Sunday got up piddled around, DH got up and we again talked about where and if we were going to move (the talks usually last about 2 - 3 hours), then we boxed up some stuff, made dinner, talked more about moving, watched a movie, talked more about moving and I went to bed exhausted as it was another weekend (this has been going on for about a year now) of not coming to decisions. It isn't really that great when the town you live in more and more people are leaving (where they went I don't know but it's local cos every once inwhile they drive by), but more and more houses are being foreclosed, we hear of families moving in with other family members, schools laying off, all libraries have shut down, crime is rising, no employment here and none anywhere else. We've done so many long distance moves and they never worked out (at least for the first couple of months). Then we listened to the bully kid next door blasting his music. DH is going through mid-life crisis I think. It was just an exhausting weekend.
Misha's weekend
I don't have much new to report about Misha, except that we did get out and go to PetsMart and she enjoyed more attention than usual from two-footed admirers of all sizes. My new prednisone dosing technique seemed to work - no crashing. She wouldn't eat out of a dog bowl, but she would suck canned food- Blue Buffalo lamb recipe - off my fingers, which was quite endearing. Sasha watched me hand-feed Misha and wouldn't touch her bowl until I had hand-fed HER 3 bites too. So I'm creating two monsters, but it felt pretty good at the time. I also got her to eat some Jumbone-type treats also, so at least she's not going to starve. :o}
Plans for the weekend?
Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?  We have no big plans...may do some clothes shopping for the kids if I feel like it.
Weekend Plans
It's my husband's birthday Saturday so we're going out to dinner with friends. It's supposed to be a hot weekend so we'll spend much of the time in the pool with our daughters. We also usually have bonfires on the weekends with the neighbors/friends and/or a cookout since the weather is so beautiful.
My weekend plan:

It's pretty self-explanatory. Buy a nice seedless watermelon, insert funnel and pour in oodles of liquor of choice...vodka, schnapps, rum, etc. (You'd be amazed at how much booze these things can drink!) Let sit overnight in your fridge if you can stand to wait that long, cut up and serve or drill holes into melon and give your best bud a straw and watch the magic happen.  See you in rehab.

Attending our first this weekend sm
since I was a little girl. We live in VA but are just across the state line from WV which is where I grew up. My DD is in her first horse show there this weekend. It is about 1 1/2 away. I am a nervous wreck for her already.

So, what's everybody got planned for the weekend?
I'll be working Saturday and Sunday, but I might have a few extra minutes to go to the fabric store.  I'm going to try to finish a few UFOs (unfinished objects - sewing).  And, I'll be stopping in here, of course.  So, what's everybody else doing?
Memorial Day weekend

So what fun things do you guys have planned for the long weekend?

I have to work.

So, so sad. Especially Father's Day weekend.
He will be so terribly missed, especially during the election coverage. I will remember him with the white board and writing all over it. I always enjoyed watching him. He sure knew his stuff. Way too young.
Girls weekend? I'm in....
Those are the best. A new place each time. What fun that would be!
Yep, my weekend to work...
Put in 10 hours yesterday and 8 today. Not as tired as I thought I'd be, but getting there.
