ashes
I, too, am a member of the dead ex club. Married 17-1/2 years, divorced 5 years, he died and I helped my then young adult children with the arrangements, etc. Oldest son kept some cremains, younger son wanted no part of it. The rest we took to a local private lake where he had membership and close family/friends each threw a handful in the lake, per his request. The cremains weren't even close to resembling ashes, more like small bits of bone, sort of like a tiny gravel-looking substance. Grossed everyone out at first, but once we got into the swing of it, it was okay. Each person said a little something as they threw theirs. What a topic to be discussing early in the morning! Have a productive day!
not like ashes
yeah- the consistency of the ashes was surprising. . not fine like you would think, more coarse. .

I have been to 2 funerals where the ashes were buried. sm
I really never understood the reason for the cremation and then the burial but I know it is done. My brother never picked up the ashes for the same reason you marriage went sour.
Okay, I have to tell a story about the wind and ashes
My uncle used to fly planes in the Air Force. He is now 77 so this was quite some time ago. When a friend died he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes scattered from a plane (also a pilot) over the ocean. Uncle Jack and his buddies took him up and opened a door over the ocean, the wind blew all the ashes right back into the plane (a cargo plane) and over all the friends. I really hope no one is offended by this. My mother was also cremated and her ashes were sprinkeled in the ocean (her request) and she just loved to tell this story.
