Not sure if you're describing what we put in our garage.  It supposedly made such loud noises that it would keep them out (it was a high-pitched noise, but just sounded like a pulsating buzz to us).  It didn't really work.

Good luck

If cats are used as rodent catchers, which I can SM

understand, I suppose their demise can be chalked up to losing their lives in the line of duty.

I have friends who live in rural area, down dirt down, on very large area of land and they purchased three kittens, which they gave as pets to their handicapped daughter.  The kitties were also used to provide rodent protection in the barn.  Guess what happened to all three kitties?  Well, two of  them were attacked by a dog.   The other was given away shortly after.
