a wife who has never worked can get Social Security benefits of her own through her husband, at retirement age. Just as a spouse and children can receive benefits if the (husband, for instance) is on disability. Even if the wife (for example) did work but made much less than her husband, she can draw off of his retirement if her spousal retirement is more; actually, I think they do it off of hers and then adjust it up to what the spousal benefit would be if it would be more, but the spousal benefit rate is a fraction of what the individual spouse's rate is, either way (Social Secrurity and/or Disability).
