They don't settle for what they are given.
They don't necessarily work harder. Based on your premise, this guy should have worked so hard he died:

Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 million, including pension, stock options and other perks, such as a $1 million consulting deal, two years of home security, personal security, a car and driver, and use of a corporate jet for professional purposes...

Corporate documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that revealed Raymond's retirement deal and his $51.1 million paycheck in 2005. That's equivalent to $141,000 a day, nearly $6,000 an hour.

Can someone settle this question between my husband and I?
He just got summoned for jury duty in the county we reside in.  He was on exempt status for the county he works in because he was working overseas for a year.  Within a month of his return stateside, he voted in a local election and now has his summons for the county we reside in.  I say it is because he votes in all these local elections.  He says it is because he has a driver's license in this state and that is how they summons people.  Who is right?  We have been really deabting this one!  Thanks, everyone!
A home, so I can settle down and work.

My thoughts are that things will eventually settle down, but --
I agree that when he graduates if he has his own family now then he should be on his own and supporting himself and the family that he is making. I would not support him anymore.

I am sorry that you are having these problems. I had war with my first mother-in-law for 20 years (not my doing) and it makes everyone miserable - I understand. Just give it some time and she will settle down. She is just seeing how far she can take things now and if your son gives in to her, that is the way it will be for life.
Thanks Patti. sm
Even though I have done my own taxes, I did not see the part about penalties if over a certain amount. I will have to check again this year. I owed over 5K, so that is probably why then. I REALLY appreciate your advice. I do not have a spouse to over withhold, so I am on my own, on that one. I will no doubt owe about that much again this year. My penalty was 129.00 last year, so will probably be the same this year. It is still easier for me to pay one lump sum than to bother with those pesky quarterly payments. I always forget about them anyway. I am a good saver, so I always have enough to pay my taxes.

Thanks again for your help. You always seem to have the right answers! Have a good night.
Thank you Patti

I dont have wood heat but gas forced air.   I also do not have a canine allergist available in this area.  I can look up one in a nearby city.  That is a good idea.

I am at wit's end with this poor thing.  Awhile back the itching was so bad during the night that I just laid down on the floor with her and rubbed her belly to make her stop itching until she fell back to sleep.  This is so sad for us.

Thx, again, for the specialist idea.  Will look into that.

Thanks Patti..sm
this is good to know, as I did not know that I was even eligible to collect SS from him because we were divorced. I have worked my whole life, since age 18, and I am 57 now, so it will be a while yet before I get to SS age. My best years for income have been in the last five years and when I get my SS statements, my allowable benefits are getting better. I am no longer afraid that I will not be able to survive and may have to work until I am 100, but knowing I can get partial help from his SS is a help too. Thanks again, for all your help!
Agreed, Patti.
My first hubby was a good friend but we never should have gotten married. We did produce a wonderful son so we were determined not to be acrimonious for his sake. After the divorce, we were better as friends, and my second husband and I are friends with him and his second wife and hang out occasionally. As a matter of fact, they stood up for us at our wedding. My son wins. There's no reason to be enemies that I can see!
Patti, my retirement age is 67
not 64, not 66 and I think they are going up on the age requirements as I speak. As you probably know, folks living longer now and that is the reason behind that. I can draw social security now in 1 year and 10 months. Can we say goody, good and hope those fingers hold out!
I agree with Patti 100%, and my cats never go outside.

Check into a papillon as well, Patti.
We got a papillon, and he's awesome. We got him at 6 weeks, he's 3 now. They're very friendly, weight about 8 pounds, and are very adaptable. They're also very smart dogs, and don't need a lot of space or a lot of exercise requirements. Ours is litter-trained (yup, they make litter for dogs). He goes on trips with us and is loved by everyone. Hopefully, his picture will show up here--his name is Auggie. It's a then and now shot. :-)
Patti you are so knowlegeable about this sort of thing--sm
and now I have a question. What if husband dies before reaching SS age, can the wive-ex-wife still collect on spouses SS when she reaches SS age? (We were married for 13 years..He remarried and they were married for 10 years. I have his three children. He took his own life at age of 58, two years ago). Does this make any difference?

thanks for your help!
This is an argument that cannot be won between

An argument between
When is it time for Mom to step in? I've been trying to let my 3rd grade son handle this kid, which just so happens to be our next door neighbor, on his own, but lately the arguing is getting worse.  They got into a *you're stupid, no you're stupid, no your mom's stupid* match today, which the bus driver had to break up.  I called the other mom, but she seemed unconcerned.  I just told my son not to talk to the other kid, and also asked the other mom to have her kid to the same thing with my son.  Anything else I should do? Just let it go for now and see what happens? Thanks for y'all's advice...
That has become a big argument in

favor of homosexuality.  I understand that argument.  For someone who believes that God said don't do it and they are against it for that reason, it is still morally wrong, even though it may be your perception that it doesn't hurt anybody.

Again, the issue is not fear, but opposition.  That's all I'm saying.  Does anybody get the point?

Your argument works against you.

Your pastor "interpreted" something else and twisted it to tell you what he wanted.  The Bible does not say to not marry outside your race.

"Interpreting" things is what causes the problem.

In the Bible, God said we are all sinners.  (Don't know why you are yelling.)  Don't shoot the messenger.

No my argument is to people who say

The Bible is written in a way to describe our creation.  It is interpreted by many to how they want it to be.  I do not read it enough to know what it says about same gender sex.  Does anyone know the exact scripture?  If so, let's hear it.  I want to hear where it says "same gender sex is a sin" in those words.  Did anyone ever think that there are people who are in same gender relationships but do not have sex.  There are heterosexual marriages and relationships where sex does not exist, so why couldn't that be true for a same gender relationship?

patti - read my note above - has anyone talked to you about membrane stabilizers?
I did pain management clinic for years and chronic herpetic neuralgia was often treated there with Neurontin (and other) membrane stabilizers. You might check it out.
I am not turning this to a religion argument- sm
I prefer not to have my child taught at a church school for personal reasons. The school they were attending squeezed in church teachings as it is, though they were not a church school, and I was not thrilled with that either. Some teachers did it more than others. As for find a teacher that "really cares" only being at a church affiliated school, that is quite a broad statement to make. At the private school my kids had been attending, the teaches were paid 25% less than what the teachers made at the public school level, which could mean 3 things, the teacher really cared and wanted a small class size to teach, (2) wanted kids that were less troublesome to teach and better behaved (3) the teacher was inadequate and could not get hired in a public school (which was the case for a few teachers where my kids were). ---There are a lot of angles to look at when considering private school religion is one of them, tuition, quality of the teachers, certification, the school board, the parent organization, the involvment expects --ours was extreme involvement which is good and bad (burnout)--I am much happier now with the kids in public school, and my 8-y/o is now actually being taught by a qualified computer teacher and not some old lady who knew nothing about computers or computer programs trying to make a few extra bucks having the kids make designs and pictures on the computer (they had a new computer teacher every year as they'd quit every year). There are pros and cons to every school, you got to find out what you want to deal with.
Never an argument and yes we both can hear and talk
and I have heard people saying marriage was hard. My husband and I do not understand this as we are extremely happily married, wouldn’t trade him for all the tea in China and I think he best fits Prince Charming. Oh, let me back that up. He is short,
probably about an inch or 2 taller than me,sorta balding on top, does not have a 6-pack so I would think for lots of females he would be overlooked. Good.
I promise I am not trying to start an argument
but it seems to come down to choosing son's best friend or daughter's best friend. She plainly stated that the girl has been throwing herself at the boy. I would be much more concerned about who my daughter is hanging around if that is the way she conducts herself.
I never intended to start and argument...
just trying to put some other perspective out there. Do whatever you want, but since you asked for opinions, I gave mine. If you disagree, fine by me, that's okay. I just try to keep in mind that parents are not perfect. Mine are not and I am not. I hope that my son can forgive me my mistakes someday.
I meant "an" argument. NM

Dear whoever started the toddler argument below...
and everyone else who felt they had to respond with petty bickering and hijack an otherwise amusing thread....let it gooooooo. Deep breath....there ya' go? Feel better?

Thanks.
Moderator, I am not the one who continued that argument. I made one comment which was SM
deleted. I am almost in tears over this. You have made a terrible, terrible mistake. I make no crude remarks to moderators, ever, ever.  I am the one who posted about the beautiful dog at the ASPCA and talk of almost nothing else. I want you to check your addresses and personaly apologize to me. You have made a grave mistake in what you jus posted. I have thanked moderators in the past and have actually posted a few days ago saying I don't understand why people have to be so mean. You need to be accurate before you accuse me.
im the one who started this conversation. things always lead to an argument on this board.
but, i have friends who never started teh santa thing, and then i have friends who still practice the santa tradition. i never questioned myself. i just did as i had been raised. but i understand how some people just dont even start santa. its cool either way. and no one has to agree...everyone is different, i respect differences. but there has got to be a cut off point for puplic school teachers, to step back and leave things for teh parents. yes other kids tell them the truth about santa and, at least i have taught my children that its "bologna..if they dont believe, they dont get presents...bla bla"..so tehy have no prob blowing that off. but when their TEACHER says it, it might as well be the GOSPEL. ya know.
I just got this new Dog yesterday
I just got this new Dog yesterday. She is so cute and good but is not trained yet. How do I get the dog to go to the door to let me know she needs to go potty? She is a sweet and very mild girl, gets along well with the cats and hardly barks. We only had two minor accidents yesterday. I could really use some tips. Thanks in advance.
Just yesterday my mom
and I were discussing dryer troubles.  Her quit working, she had a repair man take a look at it.  He vaccumed out all the lint and it cost her $150.00.  Then 3 weeks later, it quit working again.  Next time I will tell her to call you.
Went to the ER yesterday and they
said it was probably just a viral infection.  She is just in the bed sleeping on and off.  She don't want to play or do anything else.  She don't have an appetite.  She has been drinking pretty good though.  Popsicles is a good idea also.  I'll try that also.  Again, thanks so much for the advice.  It is definitely appreciated.

You should have been here yesterday
I live probably what is considered North Georgia but 19 miles south of Atlanta. The living is good where I am and the weather, about 60 yesterday and supposedly the same today. Our winters here usually mild, this year we have gotten down to the teens once or twice but nothing you probably see all the time. I wish we did not have tornados warnings here, scared of those. The weather in the summer can be HOT and humid normally. I would much rather have this than what I see with all that snow and ice. I only remember 2 times since the 80s of what you might term blizzard or icy conditions and even those gone in a few days.
yesterday's
performances, I would rather say that Danny will be voted off. Chris was really good last night and Adam will be the winner, he is just in another league.
Scheduled yesterday but....
I was also out of work, no big problem with me. I am talking about being looked at as professional, not cleaning, cooking, taking care of babies, on and on when you do have work. Posts are written about how to fit other things in while they work?? I think most of us from time to time run out of work, myself included.
Ballet - we went yesterday and...sm
she loves it, of course! They close the door and you don't get to watch, but you can hear them singing. I guess they'll start learning steps for their recital in June now. Dh is having a fit over what the costume "might cost." I just read the letter when I got home about paying the rest of the costume (gave deposit of $55). The cost for the class is $54 every six weeks. Does that seem good? Does anyone know what the costume could cost? I'll probably just call the teacher and ask, but why not state it in the letter? Is it something they don't even know yet? I'm very new to this ballet stuff so not sure.
I saw a little doggie yesterday in a car
as I pulled up to get out and looked and would have called the police, alone in the vehicle at a flea market but what saved the owner was they had the window down. The weather here was in the high 50s and climbing but I would not hesitate if the windows had been up.
It has been on MSNBC since yesterday.
I'm on the West coast and just heard about it last night.

It was clearly an accident and now she has a criminal record over it.
Yesterday I was at the mall and a

guy was walking along talking to a young girl. He rounded the corner and I was coming toward them. He stopped his conversation with her and said loudly to me,

You're pretty . . then went back to his conversation with her!  LOL! She did not seem upset at all.  Her brother? a friend?

Question. . jerk or just a darn nice guy?  LOL

She was also on Oprah yesterday
singing with Kelly Clarkson and Justin Limberlake, promoting her Duets with Rebba, I think that is what it is called, album. Think I will buy it. She is great. Also loved the sitcom, especially her with her ex and Barbara Jean. Very funny.
Someone already posted this yesterday

we had flurries yesterday....
none today...I am not excited about winter even though it is a beautiful season. I just hate below 0 weather and scraping ice off of my car.

Just wanted to thank you for your help yesterday. SM
It honestly has helped. When you said don't think of the whole amount to start with, and losing a little is more than gaining has really helped. All the comments I received were so nice and so many people can identify with this problem.  So far I am doing good. Wish me luck and thanks again!
My cat with lymphoma from yesterday.

I just wanted to thank all of you again for your kinds words to help me get through a very difficult time yesterday.  My little girl is gone.  She went very peacefully and fast.  She is now resting in my garden with a couple of garden statues to keep her company.  Her name was Sixer, as she had 6 toes on her left foot.  We got her from a shelter 10 years ago and we knew she was the one.  I wanted to get a female cat so that I would not be the only girl in the house.  She was the little girl I never had.

I had a very difficult morning today. It still feels so strange to not have her walking around the house.  Very lonely without her, especially working at home. The sun is shining again today, and I know she is in a better place.  My tears will subside and my heart won't be so empty some day, but right now not so much.

Again, my sincere thanks for being so kind.

Me too!! Saw it yesterday and thought the same!
It looks like they're acting!
I envy all of you. Our gas is $2.34 yesterday. PA
Live in a small town, but 11 miles away in another county, it was $1.48 last week. The GS around here are ripping us off and there's not a thing we can do about it.
Do you know how many times yesterday
that I started to ask this same exact question and then deleted it??? I had the opportunity the last two days to tell him I wanted out but I got scared and just stayed in the back of the house.
I did it - anon from yesterday (sm)
It's all reported and official. Now I don't feel so alone.  I don't want to get into a big discussion on here in case he is checking to see if I posted anything...but it's all documented by the right people and they have my back.  Starting my kids in counselling there as well.  I feel my backbone growing back :-)  If you have replies please reply to the orginal post below...don't want it to be right up top again, just in case.  Thanks for all the words of wisdom and encouragement yesterday.
Here in Louisville, we were 0 yesterday
(Friday) and will be 40 today (Saturday), with snow predicted for Sunday.
I saw all the posts on this subject yesterday too, --sm
and usually if the moderator moves a thread, there is an arrow showing that, or sometimes an explanation as to why something was eliminated. Sometimes if someone mentions a specific name or area, a thread might be removed, but she usually explains that. Maybe something went wrong with the system. Perhaps she will explain later when she sees this. I don't think it was placed on the *wrong board*. But congrats to the new parents!!!
When calling up my internet yesterday
playing over and over and over the picture of this mad man in different poses. I can understand why so many of the family and friends upset today with the media. Hubs made mention of every channel playing but I just keep watching fluff and not because I didn’t care, just because I know my heart and it would just break too much. The television channels were wrong in the fact they allowed this thing to have his 15 minutes.
I did not read the post yesterday and sorry
because I had puppies who got sick with mucus, bloody discharge from the anus, weight loss and I lost them. This is very lethal and had I read her post would have immediately told her to not wait for appointment to see veterinarian because this onset does not let someone take that long before young puppies can die. I had in my back yard and never could let young puppies be there ever. I hope hers is ok and she was able to get some assistance with the pup.
