 I think this generation had enjoyed TOO much privacy with regards to their money.  Like you said, everyone knows your financial status and you know your siblings, but mom is a mystery.
 
 I am in the same boat, but with in-laws and all the relatives circling like buzzards.  In my alternate universe, I would ask to see all the paperwork just for practical purposes and not mention other people's motives.  I still think they would be very resistant to it, but if I made if more of "in case of fire" type of argument, they might fess up what the real arrangements are.
 
 I still dread the day when we have to go through all the drawers trying to find stuff and all the haggling the unemployed/in debt relatives will be trying to cut a deal for more than their share with their rich/frugal counterparts!
