well I have the feeders hanging in a tree

but now that the leaves are gone, he has full view and can take his pick. He must realy like the finches, because he has been picking them off my finch sock and practically taking the sock and all (must get his toenails caught). I feel bad, because I feel I'm luring the birds out to the feeders and then they're actually becoming a meal themselves. Maybe I will look into planting some holly bushes or something thick that stays all winter and he can't get into. May not look too pretty in my front yard though. I don't know what else to do.

Diet

Juvenile

Juvenile eating a vole

The Red-tailed Hawk is carnivorous, and an opportunistic feeder. Its diet is mainly composed of small mammals, but it also includes birds and reptiles. Prey varies with regional and seasonal availability, but usually includes cottontails, rodents, pheasants and quail.[13] It may also prey on waterfowl, bats, shrews, snakes, lizards, crustaceans, insects, and when near the waters edge, carp and catfish.[11][14]The Red-tailed Hawk hunts primarily from an elevated perch site. It will swoop down from a perch to seize prey, catching birds while flying, or pursuing prey on the ground from a low flight.[14]

Prey taken can range in size from beetles to White-tailed Jackrabbits, which are double the weight of most Red-tails. In captivity in winter, an average redtail will eat about 135 g (4-5 oz) daily.[13] The Great Horned Owl occupies a similar ecological niche nocturnally, taking similar prey. Competition may occur between the Red-tailed Hawk and the Great Horned Owl during twilight

How about one of those old Evergleam aluminum trees with a color wheel?  Wish mommy hadn't gotten rid of ours, darn it.

I'm hanging

Getting a little drowsy though.  If I gets too bad, will have to let my supervisor know I'm going down for a nap.

I can't believe the poor poster above only got Advil.  I was taking Advil like candy over the weekend and it got to the point that it wasn't doing anything.

hanging out with other
Over the course of a long marriage socializing with other couples comes and goes depending on how much spare time you have to socialize.

If you are with someone who really does not like to socialize "at this moment" I would suggest a night on the town just the two of you. Then you get to go out, and he gets to reconnect with you and you may find him more interesting if you are not distracted by the other people and just have fun together.
You can also try hanging a bell...sm

On the doorknob of the door you let the dog out of if you don't want them to scratch the door.  Then teach them to lift their paw to hit the bell as a way of them letting you know they need out (or they can touch it with their nose to make the noise if you'd rather they do that).

Just lift their paw up and do it for them at first, praising them and/or giving a tiny treat each time, then open the door and go out, and pretty soon they'll figure it out.

One of our dogs figured it out a little too well, and he was soon hitting the bell again and again, very loudly and impatiently every time he just wanted out just to play, so we didn't leave the bell up for long after he was housebroken! LOL

I also agree with the crate training advice you were given.  Crates are wonderful tools as long as they're used responsibly.  A crate for a dog is sort of like a crib for a baby, IMO.

You also might want to consider something called "clicker training."  I'm not an expert on it, but I've done a litte bit and it's fun.  (You can use it to train your cats too, BTW!)

Here's a really good article I found for you on housebreaking.  It's for puppies and older dogs:

Best of luck with the training.  Enjoy your new addition to the family, and please give updates!

Well don't leave us hanging - let's have it!!! nm

I'm glad she seems to be hanging in there.
I'm sure she was relieved to see you and it did bring her comfort. Maybe she will get used to the tech if she'll just stop poking her, poor baby.
Agree with hanging it outside....

My daughter works in a restaurant that is full of smokers and when she comes home, her coat smells like a french fry rolled in an ashtray - and she always hangs her coat right next to mine.  Don't think so - it goes right outside overnight and by morning, the smell is almost gone.

I also LOVE to hang my sheets out when there is a chill in the air.  They always smell so much better than when I hang them out in the summer. Have no idea why, but they do.

So, what happened ~ don't leave me hanging!
I think Logan was going to ask Loralei if he could marry Rory, but I'm more interested in what is going to happen with Luke and Loralei, even though he was such a jerk last season.
I totally agree and I am hanging onto
my 95 truck which has too much new stuff, too, but it is paid for. This stuff worked just fine before. wonder where you are? my sister is a pilot, but I think your husband is safe, she has a mechanic already!
And your point is what? I've been hanging out SM
with Sarah Palin and she has all kinds of tips. I hear moose if pretty plentiful and one or two should last you through the season. You might have to charter your own private plane, though.

Happy hunting!
Hanging around your house (as long as
you are home) I do not see as a problem. My daughter is 14 and really the only place I let her go with a gruop is on church outings where I know they are supervised. She does have a male friend that hangs out here (same age) at times, but I am always around.

As for hanging out at a pizza place, there are probably older kids there and I would be a little leery of that.
Hanging out at your house is a good thing
as long as you are there. My house became the hang out house, and it was hard, especially when I was trying to get my work done. But I knew where they were and could step in and keep things under control when necessary. I don't have any daughters, and from what I can tell, it seems that I got the easier job in raising boys rather than girls. I had a "rule of 16" which meant my sons could not date until they were 16 years old. Boys don't really seem to fight this so much. My oldest didn't have a steady girlfriend until he was 18. My youngest was 17 when he first started dating. I also had problems with some of their friends being just plain rude. They'd swear, never say please or thank you, and just generally act like snotty brats at times. That wasn't a problem for me. I corrected them and taught them manners. I used humor, which again boys seem to respond to. Usually, when we had girls over who acted that way, the boys were quick to correct them, and I didn't have to step in myself.

As far as going out, my boys did go out to hang at the local pizza parlor in mixed groups when they were 13. I never had a problem, but they were held to time limits.

I think it's nice that the boys are having lunch at your house with your daughter. It costs a little more to feed your daughter's friends, but you have them there in the house. Be friendly and relaxed, but insist on polite behavior in your home. Surprisingly, most kids will actually gravitate to the house with that sort of atmosphere. Your daughter may give you some grief about not being allowed to do what everyone else is doing, but that's ok. Your job isn't to have her agree with all of your decisions. Your job is to do what is best for her. I think having the boys over while you are at home was a very good compromise. If it happens again, you can always say, "You know, I'm pretty hungry, too. How 'bout I have some pizza delivered. I can order extra and you can invite some other friends over, too." Good luck!
Might try hanging garlic cloves from the branches, - sm
but then again, it might just keep the people away, too!

(On the bright side, at least your tree would be free of vampires.)
Yes more of a stomach bug. Just keeps hanging on. Pains and cramps and just not feeling well. nm

You can grow tomato plants upside down from hanging pots, too.

Is your Tree up?

My Christmas tree won't go up till way closer to Christmas. We always get a real one. I know some people love to put theirs up right after Thanksgiving day! Some of us wait it out a bit longer.

When do you put your tree up?
Real or Fake?

X-mas tree
We put up tree 2-3 weeks before Xmas. Kids are 17 and 15 now and don't get as excited about it anymore. Last year, DD's friend who is Jewish helped decorate. She had so much fun because she has never done it before that it made it fun for all of us again.
And you know, the tree and the egg nog
Had LOTS to do with it :)... you can turn even the crabbiest HumBug scrooge into a rum-drinkin, holiday singin fool! And I appreciate that tons....:) Thanks.
Here is my Tree ...

Please post yours.

Our Tree

It's way too small for the space, but we got it when we were in a smaller house with lower ceilings.  I still like it though.  Took this before I got all the presents wrapped.

Real Tree
We just put our tree up today. A 10 footer that we paid $35 for which I thought was a great deal. We used to have an artificial tree until our cat started eating the needles (she won't touch the real needles). She got really sick (the needles stayed in her stomach) and she had to have an emergency operation. No more artificial tree from then on.
Real tree
I'll never do fake.
real tree
not bought, but hunted for; we love the smell of cedar throughout the house!
First fake tree ever!
I put it up last night and I have to say, it's quite impressive! Lots of lights, nice shape, easy to put together and even has a remote control to switch the lights on and off. I miss the smell of a real tree but not the mess.

Education of Little Tree?
I did not see the View, but I do own this book and loved it. It supposedly was an autobiography by Forest Carter, but turns out he made the whole thing up, which ended up being a really disappointed me as I found the characters so real. I live in the mountains of WNC and am part Cherokee. Good to hear that your kids are into tribal life.
prelit tree
I agree with the others, I love mine and will never, ever have an old tree again.  We keep ours in the garage and have for the last 2 years, and it still works!
Artificial tree
My MIL has a table top artificial tree that she decorated around 10 years ago. At the end of each holiday season, she covers it with a sheet and puts in the back of the closet. I don't know if the lights even work anymore or if she changed them at some point. It is just really funny every year when we get it out of the closet, take off the sheet, and voila! grammy is ready for another xmas.
Our tree was not prelit but we don't take
the lights off now that they are on. We put up about 5 trees, all different sizes and my DH just puts them in the back of a pick up (without decorations) and puts them in a storage unit.
We always put our tree up the day after Thanksgiving. sm
we all sing-a-long Christmas songs to CDs while we decorate. I can't stand putting them up until after Thanksgiving. I have to close one holiday before i move onto the next, lol.

The other tradition i started with my kiddos is they always get to open ONE present on Christmas eve. that one present is always and will always be PJs. when they were little and i looked back on our Christmas pictures, i realized they were in whichever PJs they went to bed in. so then i decided every year to get them PJs for a gift so everyone looks nice for pictures the next morning.

My little dog and the Xmas tree...s/m
Hayseed you brought back the sweetest memory. Had a little lhasa apso named Blondie.  One year the tree went up, got decorated, etc.  Hours went by with no sign of Blondie. More time passed, no Blondie.. Started calling her name, looking from room to room, then looking outside for her. Nowhere in sight.  About 1/2 hour later I just happened to go under the tree and there she was, laying on the green tree shirt and looking up at the lights. She spent about another hour like that and finally came out. It was the sweetest thing I ever saw........
You left one out ----- NO tree.

Real tree...sm

I like tall and thin, but DH likes big and fat.  This year, it's kinda tall and fat.

Education of Little Tree
GREAT BOOK!! I passed my book around to my friends and they all loved it too. My aunt even bought a couple as gifts to others. Easy read and very enjoyable.
Pic of our Maple Tree
It's just about ready to lose the leaves.
Our tree is undecorated until 12/24.
Maybe it's more a European thing. (My grandparents were immigrants and we lived with them.) Or it's more of a Catholic thing, but we observe the season of advent leading up to Christmas. We decorate the tree on Christmas Eve day, light it after midnight, and then observe the Christmas season through "Little Christmas" on January 6. Then all the decorations come down. A few of our neighbors do the same, but it seems that most people start Christmas at Thanksgiving and then have everything down the day after.

I do have a selfish reason for enjoying the Christmas season, which is that my birthday is 12/26, and I LOVE having Christmas decorations up on my birthday! People with "normal" birthdays in the middle of the year don't get to do that!
When do you buy your Christmas Tree? sm

What kind do you get and how tall do you get?  We redid our living room over the summer and since then, at least once a month, I've walked around asking where we are going to put our tree (a big boxed tree that is a pain in the rear to put together and sheds about as many pine needles as a real one).  I've decided (yesterday - haven't approached DH yet) that I'd like to try one of those tall skinny ones so I think that buying a real one this year would be better to try out before making the investment in a fake one that I might not care for.

One more question - any problems with your pets and a real tree??  Years and years ago, the guy at the tree lot swore up and down to me a specific tree (can't remember what kind now) that cats will stay out of - yeah right!! My cats still managed to drag that tree halfway through my apartment! LOL

We got our tree today
We went to a tree farm, took a tractor ride and cut down our tree. We have 12 foot high ceilings and usually get a 12 foot tree, but this year we put it at the other end of the family room, and we got an 8-1/2 footer.

We used to have a fake Christmas tree up until about 8 years ago or so when our cat began eating all the fake pine needles. Long story short she ate so many she had to have emergency surgery to remove them (she wasnt' able to pass them) and $1,500 later we decided no more fake trees. She's no longer with us, but when she was younger she would climb in the tree and actually knocked it over one year. We had to anchor it to the wall. Our other cat never really bothered the tree except batting around ornaments at the bottom. He's been over sniffing it today, but hasn't paid much attention to it over the past few years.
Christmas Tree
Real and anywhere from 8-1/2 to 12 feet tall depending on where we put it in our family room. It's up and decorated since Saturday.

kitty's own tree..
I think that's a great idea!
Combined with the squirt gun when he tries messing with the big tree.. love this idea!
...and if he/she destroys the little tree, you can likely buy a replacement after the holidays for next to nothing!
Happy Holidays!
This will be the first year I might buy an artificial tree
with lights because I'm tired of fighting with the lights every year (both putting on and taking off) and I'm also sick of the mess of pine needles the real tree leaves as it dries out. Also my pets seem to like to drink the water in the tree stand which makes them quite ill - too much bother all around. Lastly - cost! Trees around here are $40 and up for a decent one.

We just donated our artificial one to the school to place in the hallway; hunting down a real tree is the kickoff to our family Christmas!!! It's a special event every year.
