Also, I was able to learn Shorthand in just a couple of hours without reading the manual, lol.

In Reply to: I am going to order Shorthand for myself today. I love it. You can also manage your words in - separate folder with it. nm

Every day, after typing for a couple or hours or more, my right leg swells. sm

I try to remember to get up every couple of hours and walk around, but still, by the end of the day, the leg is swollen from the knee down, and I sit on the sofa with the leg propped up on pillows.  I have tried switching the feet I use for my foot pedal, tried propping the foot up on a stool, but nothing seems to help.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

All MTs are asked to work a couple of hours
if they can to keep the clients covered. No one is "assigned" holidays. Normally, this takes care of everything.
Thank you - I think I have a bit to learn about shorthand - how about holding your bolded words when

A couple of Shorthand questions, please.

How do I quickly modify an entry?  (I've been pulling up shorthand, putting in the short form, clicking on Dictionary, then modify, then cut and paste....there has to be an easier way).

How do put yo (for year-old) directy behind the age without putting a space (i.e., 32yo instead of 32 yo).

How do I stop SH from working when I'm in my e-mail or on the Internet for a brief time, but don't want to completely close out the program?

The ShortHand directions I have are very unclearly written, so I'm grateful for any help to these and upcoming Shorthand questions!

another thing, when they do see the kids, all they do is complain after a couple of hours - sm
how tired the kids make them. Yeah, you can have the kids for 2 days.....plus his mom would drive them all over town and "show them off". They are little trophies to her. All her friends get their grandkids on the weekends, some every weekend (lazy parents?) and it kills her that she does not. I am just happy my parents were/are (only dad now) the total opposite of them, they have a good time with the kids but at the same time us common sense, which is the big lacking component in my husband's parents. I think we do okay though and like I said they see the kids on a regular basis, sometimes 2 x a month, sometimes 1 x a month. Considering our busy schedule around here that is pretty good.
Can point in a direction but takes reading, re-reading sm

Goggle.com and enter various phrases to get articles and companies.  I use a free doanload of ExpressScribe, yep, it is free. They have a number of various software things on their site to read and perhaps one will fit. The express Scribe is a piece of sotware to download, it is very simple and I like simple. You can listen and transcribe various voice file formats. You can use a wav pedal one is called a serial pedall and I think it is 9 pin and plugs in the back of PC and also another pedal I think a 15 pin wav pedal and goes in the USB port in front.  However, you can also use it without a pedal and it works fine.  You use a couple of key to stop, pause, rewind, I forget the key.  There are a lot of pedals so don't just jump in.  On this site you may benefit from emailing the company after reading and rereading, even if you don't understand.  .

An error reading or a negative reading? (nm)
nm
I have 2 middle age couple friends. One couple became pregnant from condom failure.
This is not just "irresponsible" behavior! Both couples are "fixed" now, because for them, reliable birth control was NOT. But it's an error to assume this stuff happens to people who are unmarried or irresponsible. Both these couples are raising 2nd families, now, but it wasn't "irresponsibility" that did them in!
For us slow pkes---my best would be 3 hours, worst 6 hours - just depends on the dictator ,
I have to look up (i.e. Dr. names, addresses)...I have to do a lot of that and it majorly slows me down, without all that and good not too horrible dicators, in 1 hour I can do anywhere from 15-20 minutes of dictation.
But in transcription, if you are good at what you do, you can do 8 hours of work in 4 hours. So eit

you slice it, both companies will still get 8 hours worth of work out of you.

That is the problem I've been having lately being an MT.  Companies want to pay us on production and they set minimum productivity standards, but want us timed in for 8 hours a day.  My thinking is, if they want 8 hours of work out of me, pay me hourly with production incentive.  If they want to pay me on production and tell how much I have to produce in an 8 hour period, then when I hit that mark, I should be able to call it a day even if I've only worked 4 hours.

Seems these companies want it both ways and it is simply not fair to us MTs.  JMO, tho.

SpeedType and Shorthand are the exact same program. Shorthand is lots cheaper and also has a trial.
.
{@KEY BkSp}-pack-per-year is for Shorthand. Using the semicolon works with both Shorthand and

;yo = -year-old

;py= -pack-year

etc...

Shorthand and SpeedType are exact same program. Shorthand will cost you lots less.
you can import your autocorrect into Shorthand.

Did that manual state that the funds that were to be used to immobilize this mission were diverted to homeland security.
I took shorthand too. But it sure comes in helpful for my expanders. I view words in shorthand for
i did use shorthand once in a job but i was so nervous the "boss" took pity and dictated the report on dictaphone.

EXText manual
Anybody know where to find an EXText manual to download?  Previous posts with website addresses do not work.
The help file IS the manual.

Well i found the manual but...
It is saying that you have to get the ID from the person who created the encruption and if they didn't do it in Scribe you may not be able to decrypt them. I don't know if you have access to another decrypttion type program and can open them and then copy??
EXtext manual

Try going to Nuance.com  for the dictaphone EXtext manual.

Just started last week on this program. Still learning it but overall seems to be good program.  Good luck!

I see, we sit at the keyboard for 40 hours and then throw on 20 more hours
Is this how you do it? Me? I got a PT job so that if my FT job didn't have enough work to meet my needs financially, the two jobs together would.

They hired me to work a specific shift and that is what I am working. If they want me to type after I clock out, then I will happily do so.
I must say, I work long hours, sometimes 12-14 hours a day.
I thought it was important to mention that. However many hours it takes to get the work done is what I do. Some days 12 hours, other days 6 hours and sometimes 14 hours. So, I guess there really is no easy answer.
I do 2000 lines in 6 hours - so maybe 3 hours - nm

Straight Talk manual

I had emailed you and asked you to contact me for information regarding a manual. You can download it at Dictaphone's website, but since it has been a week or two since I emailed you I can't remember exactly where on their website. I guess just do some looking around. I think it was in frequently asked questions or something like that.

I looked in my manual but could find nothing-sm

Dictaphone Extext manual

I was just wondering if anybody can tell me where to find a manual for Extext?  I did a Google search but could not find anything.  I do not need the whole manual, but I would like to know some of the shortcuts of using the program.

TIA!

If it is Shorthand, save the SPF file to a disk, then if you buy Shorthand yourself....
you can just drop the SPF file into it. That is not dishonest since you are the one who put the macros in. I am sure is it is another Expander there is a way to save the macro file and then drop it in the expander you buy on your own.
Maybe you have a shortcut that's interfering. Did you check the manual for
the program shortcuts that you might be hitting thinking it's for something else?

There are many other good books out there too.  It took me months in medical transcription school to stop making the same punctuation mistakes over and over again.  My teacher told me repeatedly, but sometimes it just takes awhile to sink in, so you might be better off taking a class or reading a great book on the subject.  There are also a lot of websites to help with that sort of thing if you want to Google it.  Have you looked into joining AHDI (formerly AAMT)?  I believe they offer help from mentors.
Read the policy and procedure manual, maybe something is in there.
I do not believe there is a law, but you could check with the labor department.
