regarding you saying you have enough garbage -
what a disgustingly racist thing to say.
Garbage in, garbage out.

And why do we put up with all this garbage?!?!?
Because we've been forced to...that is why. I own a small MTSO and I have become frustrated myself. I could outsource overseas and make more money, but that is not an option for me as I have worked for companies who did offshore and only paid me 8.5 cents/line with 25-years experience! I cannot afford to stay in business and compete with companies who are outsourcing overseas. I have become so frustrated that I have found a new niche in health and wellness (the next trillion $ industry) and I am setting my goals for 1 year in this nasty business and then I'm done!! I think other frustrated MTs should try to find other ways to make money...Life is too short to do something that is so frustrating 10 hours plus a day. I've been in transcription for 25 years and began on a typewriter with a reel-to-reel machine...and this is what we've come to. Let's leave this nasty business to the offshore companies who are willing to work for peanuts...cuz I'm done being abused, disrespected, etc.
BOS garbage
Ditto on the above.  As a proofreader for years, I find the books mentioned above are much more correct and usable than the book of style promulgated by AAMT.  They just change something if they want to willy-nilly and expect us to go for it.  I think Gregg's is a great book and their many others.  I find it difficulty to understand why major companies would want to follow a bunch of rules promulgated by a gaggle of uneducated transcriptionists in that book of style.  It is very irritating to be forced by an employer to use some of those things which are obviously and patently incorrect:
That's right. Garbage in, garbage out...sm
Some are too quick to blame the MT or equipment or sound waves or man in the moon for poor quality transcription.  Standard dictation equipment carries a better sound quality today than ever, better than the average cell phone as far as sound goes, and we have no trouble at all understanding our friends on the phone, right?  It's the dictators.  And it's not just the ESLs that are causing the problem, but most dictators, native and foreign, are just plain inconsiderate or thoughtless.  They shuffle through charts while they make us wait and sleepwalk through a patient history, then speed 78 rpm through meds, labs, which are the mainstay of a dictation.  Who cares where the patient went to grammar school?  Just take the extra 3 seconds it takes to spell me the name of his PCP!
BOS garbage
I agree 100%. It is crap! I was typing for years when this so called "bible" was introduced and I was expected me to change what was corrected to begin with. First off, I had two years of typing in school prior to becoming a MT, by the way I started out transcribing on a typewriter...remember those, So, I did not buy into the BOS rather let my Drs make the call. Since they put more trust in me than that book...well I guess you figured it out. It never happened. Personally, I would never work for someone you used the book. Garbage, all about making money.
what garbage!
I live in a New York neighborhood where I do not come into contact with blacks who speak Ebonics.

And if so, I could certainly not understand what they are saying.

If you were of European decent and somebody would insinuate that you are Indian because your syntax is not QUITE American, wouldn't this strike a nerve with you?

One can live a looooong time in New York, without having to understand or talk Ebonics.

What a garbage you post!
just change it to Garbage...
cuz that's what they are!
I only have a second to answer. Same garbage
happened to me. My lawyer didn't give a hoot about me. I paid him big bucks, too. This is what I did and BOY DID IT WORK. Look in the yellow pages under lawyers - I can't remember the name, but lawyers are governed by a formal something or other, just as physicians are governed by the AMA. Seriously, I am just sneaking here for a second, but I know you can find this info. Its who the laywers answer to. Call that number and tell them you want to file a formal complaint against your own lawyer for improper handling of your divorce matters. The people at the # for me were super nice. They have formal forms for you to fill out, and once you call and ask for them, they ask you for the name of the attorney. The attorney gets contacted. The minute mine got contacted that I was about to file a complaint, he did all the stuff he was supposed to do a year ago, and promptly refunded ALL OF MY $$!. It was great! The divorce papers werer revised. I got my stuff, my freedom, my maiden name back AND my $$. I have to run. Bye
How can verbatim=garbage?
We transcribe what professionals dictate.  These people went to college for a long, long time to learn their profession.  Who are we to say verbatim=garbage!!!  Become a physician, then talk that garbage!  Give me a break!  We average $25.00 an hour if we're lucky as transcriptionists, and these physicians are making much, much more than that because they went to school to be a physician and treat patients.  Come on!  Transcription is just that, typing what the doctors say verbatim, maybe correct a little inconsistency here and there (we're all human), but to say the physicians' statements are garbage is wrong, wrong, wrong!  If we were so bright, we wouldn't be typing, we'd be doctors!!!!!!!!!!!  Let's give credit where credit is due!  Bottom line is no doctors-no transcriptionists!  AAMT is just another company out there trying to turn a buck!  They don't know it all and neither do we for goodness sakes!  Do the best job you can because believe me if you are that important in the medical field (as a transcriptionist), you'd make what the doctors are making!!!!!  I'm sure I'll get blasted for this one!!!!  Oh well!
When US MTs refuse to edit their garbage
xx
I am white and offended by that garbage post as
well. I am so sorry there are people like above poster in this world. A nice informatie post turns to garbage - oh well.
I work early morning shift and I get the garbage

leftover from the day before.  I will often get 6 reports from a very difficult ESL dictator and they may be over an 8 hour period of dictation.   When there is such a gap in the dictation you know you are being assigned these reports, not just luck of the draw.   All work is assigned by the office.   I have seen my line count drop about 4000 lines/pay period the last couple of months because I'm getting such bad dictators.  I don't mind doing my fair share, but it certainly isn't fair that my line count is being affected like it is.

I have complained to my supervisor and it got better for a couple of months and now it is the same crap all over again and I'm looking to move on.

Yes, all utilities, garbage pick-up, home repoairs involving your office, etc
:+
Went to pig roast. Chefs had no idea how to cook pig. Ended up smelling and tasting like garbage.

To finish...no one obviously feels like typing up, so the night people get the pool garbage. Grrrr.

When I broke my ankle, I was just grateful it wasn't the hands. Without our hands we'd be totally screwed.

I broke my right ankle slipping on ice and was lucky to have gloves on because the palm of the glove was totally torn up and my hand was okay.

Good luck and be sure to do your exercises when it is time.

I have two IC contracts right now. I recently went back to a job I had quit earlier in the year to work for the other company I am still working for.

The newer job has 80% ESLs. I transcribe OP notes primarily and I can fill in other work types as the opportunity arises. I am frustrated with this particular situation. After 6 months, I am making less money and working longer hours. I am past the learning curve and I should be doing better, at least in the number of hours I am spending doing the job. We have run out of work for 24 hrs at a time at least 5 or 6 times since December 1, and in November it was more than that. I have a friend who worked for this company as well and she was having similar difficulties. The only thing that we can figure is that they are shorting us line count some way, because after 6 months at it, it should be easier/faster/more money, but it is less and less every single pay period. It is not a nice thing to accuse a company of doing, but it SEEMS that way to us. I am fed up with being expected to type every single OP note that comes in 24/7 and meeting the 6 hr TAT for them on weekends, evenings, holidays, wee hours of the morning...

I took back a job I held for 2-1/2 yrs. The team leader has changed and this gal thinks that I should be on call 24/7 for whenever she has work. I might have some at 7 a.m., or perhaps not until 6 p.m. or later. I can't plan my personal life and between these two IC situations, I find that I am not eating on a daily basis, not showering on a daily basis and not sleeping more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. I have lost weight and I don't feel very well. I woke up today with a rip roaring head cold (my first in nearly 8 yrs) and it has already moved to bronchitis and I am expecting pneumonia by the weekend because I develop it very easily. I already have deep pain in my back.

Yes, I should call in sick tomorrow, but I really can't take the fallout. The job I took back I am covering for another gal who wanted vacation over the holidays and if I have to call in sick, the team leader will call me and pitch a fit about how this is my responsibility. It IS my responsibility, I did say I would do it, and I will do it, despite being quite ill. In the past, when I worked for this company, they would not allow me to call in sick for a "cold" without a doctor's note. I worked through many illnesses with them and only called in sick when I developed West Nile Fever and while I was sick for over a month, I only called for my last 12 reports one day when I could no longer see the computer screen because my head hurt.

The problem is that yes, many MTs lack work ethic. They don't take their responsibility seriously. This is not a work as you please career, not even for an IC. I can see the MTSO's point of view, I truly can. Like finding experienced, reliable and capable MTs, for the MTs who are these things, finding a company will treat you like a human being is equally difficult. I sit here, feeling lousy and like I am an utter slave labor with no consideration whatsoever. I know that my work needs to be done, but when I am this sick it is better that someone else do it for the sake of the work, for accuracy and for speed of getting it out. I know that I am needed, but to be the MT these companies need me to be, I also need to look after my own health.

I will also mention that when I have asked for vacation, I have been approved for the time, but the MTSO queues up my work and calls me then I am not on the system getting it done. I have told them I had been approved for time off, but the MTSO didn't schedule anyone to cover for me and I am told to get on work, vacation or no, if I want to keep my job.

Thus, I work 24/7/365 and have for years. I work sick, I work when I am in pain (I have an AI disorder), I work exhausted from staying up all night covering for others who are allowed to call in sick and have vacations when I can't have either. I work having no health insurance and not being able to afford the $125 a month to buy some with a high copay so I can see a doctor. I work without breaks for breakfast, lunch or dinner and I sometimes come close to having an accident because if I leave my desk to go to the little girls' room I get nasty calls about where I am at and what I am doing.

Many MTs are mistreated, and I am one of them.
Take a break
I have felt this way many times while transcribing. I have actually taken a leave of absence to get over it. It does help.
a break...
You said that Hispanics did not gang rape and were not pedophiles - that it is always white men and of course, priests. You want to apologize to Catholics for accusing all priests for what a very few did? You honestly don't think other churches' religious leaders are pedophiles?

Give the rest of us a break and go educate yourself before you post on here.

BTW, how old are you? You sound like a 12-year-old with your puhleeez...........
It is definitely a better tax break
and you get flexible hours like an IC while having your employer share of SS tax paid by the company.
They can still break
They can still break while the doctor is dictating or rewinding or when you are playing to covert.  There is still that possibility.  Kind of like BCP's -- not 100% guarantee
5 a.m. and now time for a break

I've always said I'd rather break a leg....sm

than a hand... and sure enough I did.  A few years ago I fell off the top of a ladder and as I was falling, which only took about 5 seconds, my MT survival instincts took over and I stuck my foot out to protect my hands.  Three surgeries later I was back at work with a cast on my right leg from ankle to thigh.  Believe me, you'll adjust to using your left foot.  I did it for almost a year.

Do it anyway. I have not had a break either, but am taking off 18-23 - sm
my mental health is more important than $. Going up to my dad's for a few days to celebrate Jen's last chemo (8/17), have her rest by the pool at his house, visit the Herr's plant, go to Dutch Wonderland, Philly zoo, etc. Just me and my 2 girls to have a little fun together...and for me to see my dad and my friends up in PA. Shouldn't be doing it money-wise, but tough, I know I deserve it and my kids too. We couldn't take a formal vacation due to Jen's chemo and some restrictions, so this is the next best thing. -- If you feel you can't take 5+ days off then do 2-3 and go out and do something. It will make you feel better.
No, I just was finished with my break and had to
get back to work. VPN is not connecting and I'm on hold with tech support.

There are a few things that would make me leave: A really harsh line rate cut for the same work; being forced to be an employee with a set schedule are two reasons that come to mind immediately.
Give yourself a break (sm)

and do something else this year, it doesn't have to be forever.  Also, I think you should tell your mother the problem.

You can join me, I have an evil stepmother and nobody would pick me up from the Amtrak and now the tickets are sold out and it's too late to go for the holidays.  On the other hand, I find dealing with it so draining that I'm off the hook this year and can do whatever I want, I won't be spending my holiday on the freeway.  Good luck!

How do you break into op reports?
Is there one specialty or type of report that's easier or faster or generates more lines?  Is it the platform?  Which platform is the best?  I really would like to have a half-decent MT income in 2006.  I have the SUM program ops tapes but no keys.  Thanks.
I know what you mean but I have been lucky this break - sm
First day of break we left for Disney on a Make-A-Wish trip for my daughter who has/had a Wilms tumor (03/2005). So we had 6 days of fun there at a wonderful place called Give the Kids the World Village....only children with cancer, recovering from cancer, etc., stay there, great place. So back from that, had Christmas at home then I took them to see my dad (saw their other grandparents on Christmas day) and we are leaving from his house this morning. So they have been kept pretty busy and have had a blast. Granted my paycheck will be pretty poor (took off for Disney of course) and worked very minimally while at my dads. Key is to keep them busy and not bored I guess. Of course I have to get until Tuesday now at home but with all the gifts from Christmas, etc. I think they will be able to entertain themselves for a while....plus they usually pester my DH before me....but I have a very light work schedule for the weekend ( a whole 30 minutes of work, I think--haven't checked yet though) and don't work again until Tuesday. So I am enjoying it since next week won't be so leisure filled. Try to enjoy some, just make a little less for 2 weeks, then jump back in the grind!
hate to break it to you
but the JC is just a company paid by the hospitals to rate them. They really really don't do anything other than that. Your email will be deleted faster than you can say "where'd it go?" Some of the Americans are worse than the foreigners, slurring, sounding like on a mixture of crack and or meth.
should be "planes" - Wow, I need a break! nm

Give me a break!!

If you are working that much and making $6000 to $7000 a month it's a good thing... the only way you will be able to spoil your kids is w/material things.. would rather work less and enjoy what little time they are little....
I have read so many times about people who say they make all this money... I often wonder what else these people do with thier lives???
How to break in to OPs or orthopedics?
Any companies willing to work with a very experienced radiology MT?  TIA
To get a break your in-laws might consider...
respite care for a week or two. It would cost about what they are paying the private nurse. They would not even have to really "get away." Just having a break from constant care would be a vacation. I know; been there and done that!
You might try to coordinate it with your break
instead of sitting there fuming while you're trying to hear Dr. Mushmouth. You could ask him to give you an idea of when he might be doing it and be ready to quit work for 20 minutes or so while he cuts the grass outside your window. But be real nice about it or he'll get all offended (if he's like my DH). :oD
Give her a break

You sound like such a rightious person, hope you don't need help some day.  Again I would much rather have her collect some unemployment until she can find a job that truly suits her than just have to take any job.  You can say the employer pays it but it is a 'Undefined benefit" that we all have when we work enough hours and if someone lays you off or fires you for cause as long as you weren't stealing or doing something against the rules.   Much better than the welfare fraud, the illegals coming in and taking our tax dollars after having only been here for a few weeks/months.  At lease she has been in the workforce contributing to society and her taxes.  So get off her back, give her some space so she can find a job that suits her and doesn't have to take the first one that comes along.  And no, I am a MTSO and cannot collect unemployment so I am not personally involved in this.

Give her a break!
For crying out loud! You obviously have never taken time away from your own accounts (Yes, time = money!) to try to train someone only to have her turn around and quit on you. It is frustrating, time consuming and costs money to the person who is kind enough to try to give her a break. This person is totally within her rights to feel violated. Personally I wouldn't give out her name either, but I wouldn't bash the original poster for stating her frustration over the situation. Please walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you criticize them.
First of all do quit, take a break - sm
since you don't have to have the money. Since you like MT then get another MT job on a PT basis. Do maybe 30 minutes a day, which should give you about $25-$50 a day, sure won't be a huge paycheck but enough to give you a little more time for yourself and your sanity. Why kill yourself when you don't have to. If you don't want to switch jobs for some reason then cut back on the amount of work. But from the sounds of it you need a new, easier, job. Get looking!
Hate to break it to you all but
try googling that how it sounds and see what comes up for teragoid. Used to take a lot more knowledge and skill but unfortunately because of all the tools that are now available, like the high-tech software, internet search engines and message boards, the speech rec 'editing' and verbatim accounts, the fact that cost and turnaround are more important than the finished product, and so the bulk of mistakes going unnoticed because, uh, who is checking?, any good typist with decent grammar and spelling skills will be able to do it.
Tax break, tax refund
Yes, Bush is waiting on Congress to pass his emergency tactic to keep the economy from nose diving. He says this will stimulate the economy by us spending it. I say, it's another Bush tactic to try and stave off a recession while he is turning out his last days in office. I say, it is ridiculous. Take care of the infrastructure, the middle class, strength education, jobs, job retraining for older adults, etc., etc., etc.
I break my macros down. There may be

a part that is always, always the same and that will be one macro.  The next sentence might be the same, except for right or left and I'll make that a separate macro.

I used to do lots of cataract surgeries and 99.9% of the time the only thing that changed was the eye having the surgery and the diopter of the lens so in that case I could do the entire report, one for left, one for right, and then insert a stop for the diopter so I could fill it in.

The doctor's didn't even dictate a complete report so you didn't have to read through the report anyway to make sure they weren't changing something.  They would just dictate right, right, right, xx diopters.

I am wondering how do you break into QA
I am looking for the steadiness of an hourly position. MT is fine but I am a single parent with one disabled child and tired of the fluctuation of production pay. I would love a steady salaried or hourly QA position from home or in office. Just don't know here to start. I have over 10 years MT experience. Excellent editing skills. Open to any suggestions. Email on board or privately.
The easiest way would be to break into...sm
acute care for the same company you do clinic for if they have acute care available. If not it is going to be hard. The company you are currently with would be more likely to train you to do acute care because they know what your capabilities are.
break in experience
A typewriter - don't even want to think of that. Did you have to take any courses or just did well on the test? I find I do well on the tests but the flub the interview kind of discouraging
time for a break?
I just was typing along, a circumcision and the dr said, we then removed the papoose, and I thought, that's kind of a cute thing to call it, and then later he said specimen: prepuce" adn I realized what I had done, and I'm glad I caught it but I still think papoose is kind of cute if you get my anatomical meaning. javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
