Anything more than a week for a norm delivery is too much, sm

C-section - I would say 2 weeks max. Anything more than this is "milking it."

The delivery isn't over until placenta
is delivered, and if not intact then they have to do a D&C.
First ever delivery note
When doc says cord blood was collected, I put "quart of blood was collected".
It was not the subject matter, it was the delivery.
OPEN YOUR MIND is rude. I used to think like you did until I saw firsthand what all the closed businesses did to our town. It's not my way or the highway. I do see your point. It's a no-win situation. Walmart provides low paying jobs with lousy benefits where those workers used to have decent jobs with benefits elsewhere.
Do you charge for pickup/delivery? sm
Can I charge? If I do pickup/delivery, do you give them a 48-hour turnaround time or longer? Wanted to pick up 2 days a week, Tuesday and Thursday. Any suggestions would be helpful. Also need suggestions on what type of carrying case to put tapes to be HIPAA compliant. Any answers would be appreciated.
Re: Going rate for tape tx/delivery
The only advice I can offer, since I have never been in business for myself, is to state where you live. Rates can vary by region.
Sounds like tape delivery sm
Do you still do tapes? I would like to do this, so there is hope. I am going to retire and want to offer such service to those docs who have not gone digital. Am I going backwards? Yes, but I would like the flexibility of a 48-hour turnaround and going back to what I used to do. I like it better, as I was totally in charge of my own destiny. Don't laugh, I loved it!!! As long as it's close by. I live in New England. I loved the one-on-one contact with the client, etc., and I was appreciated! Let me know if anyone is still doing this horse and buggy type work.
YES, if the pregnancy or delivery was complicated...nm
nm
Me, too!! Also can't stand delivery notes. Bleah! nm

No DSL, no cable, not even mail delivery to house.
I live in an isolated pocket half a mile from county line where cable service ends. Even postal service is in town 3 miles away in the other county so no delivery to the house, though we can have a mailbox just across the line. Most cell phones don't work in this mountainous area. My son was able to use his new cell phone with bells and whistles if he sat outside on the deck. His service provided by Verizon.

Phone lines here are ancient. Dialup maxed at 26.6, and that was rare, usually 19.2. When I called the phone company a few years ago and asked about the future of DSL here, the guy actually laughed before saying, "It'll be while, and there will probably be new and better technology before then." Only choice is satellite. So far, it's been very good. I've had one or two brief periods of outage on heavily overcast rainy or snowy days, but overall pleased. I do keep a cheap dialup plan for those times as a backup.
Leftover delivery pizza from last night, heated in sm
microwave.  Sausage, mushroom, fresh tomatoes.  Such a good place I found locally.  Can't resist them.
Day Labor/ Temp Agencies/pizza delivery
You only asked for meal advice.. I just wanted to tell you about these places in case you didn't know. Every city usually has several "day labor" companies. Your dh would have to arrive around 5-6 am, they would take him to a site all day. They usually pay the same day. He would need is license and ss card.
Most temp agencies have jobs immediately available too.

Another idea is to deliver pizza at night. He could still do real estate during the day. He would get cash right away. They pay for gas mileage, at least minimum wage, he would get tips, and PIZZA! :-)

Not the norm
Well, you are not the norm. All you have to do is turn on the TV to see that. Jeeez, wake up.
But isn't that the norm everywhere now?
xx
is this the norm ?

I began p/t IC work for a local MT company and they're driving me crazy.  THey look at every single word I type and send me HARD COPIES in the mail of my corrections, format changes, etc.

I have 15 years of MT experience - so this is crazy!  It's all illegible - and I'm starting to go crazy!  They pointed out "40mg"  instead of "40 mg" ... all little stuff like that.  Is this what I'll have to look forward to ?   Thanks, MT-NY

I'm sure that's far from the norm
Michael Moore has been pretty good at twisting facts in the past. Not saying it didn't happen, just saying I'm sure it's not the norm in our country. I'll still take the USA any day.
8 cpl is the norm?
So, can I assume 8 cpl is about average?  If I take a typical 48000 character file, there's about $3.80 difference.  That looks small, but mulitply that by at least 2 times a day, 5-6 days a week, and in the long run it would make a big difference for me.
You are right, it is not the norm at first, but including myself and many others that I know
personally, we do make around 100 or more per day working for a national. It is very possible! You just gottah look.
I still don't understand how someone can have so many years experience, be on the same system, and make less than 175 lines per hour. I don't understand.

Maybe they are not typing fast enough or know enough terms, is all I can think of.

I've switched jobs in the past few months and started off slow, but now up to approximately 200 lph - came from a job where I did 350 lph on WP5.1 and now on an internet platform. I don't kill myself everyday working either.

It is about the norm around here in my neck of the USA. nm

I would say it absolutely is the norm for
Rad to be paid by the report. I have only worked for 1 company by line and didn't stay long. The company I work for now I get $1.50 a report. The lowest I have been paid is $1.10 a report. Unless the account is heavy in MRIs, CTs, etc. there is no way I would work for line.

If you have been doing this for over 12 years then I would say you are cheating yourself out of some good money. I average 180-200 reports a day, or $2700 a pay period -- can you say the same?
That is the norm from what I have experienced - sm
this gives the bride and groom time for pictures, etc. between the wedding and the reception. Every wedding I have ever been too, it's been about 90 minutes between the 2 events. Unless the reception is at the same place as the wedding, I'd expect some sort of gap between the two.
Have no idea if this is the norm or not but -sm
it seems like a sensible thing to do. I had to fast starting 24-hours before the colonoscopy, but I could drink certain things and have certain colored ice-pops/water ice (up until midnight), then about 15 hours before the procedure had to take 4 Duculax, then 2 hours later start drinking a 1/2 gallon of NuLYTELY (yuck, totally gross). Needless to say I am very glad I don't have to do it again for 10 years! I'm only 40 so I am 10 years too early for it as it is....but unfortunately had to have it done.
this is not the norm, dump them
Really now... nobody checks my work.
98% is the norm for accuracy
and most companies have their own QA system of assigning point deductions per error divided by line count. If you have a way to review your reports after they go through QA you should be able to see what your percentage is. If not, ask QA.
I have worked for a lot (too many) of companies, and this is the norm. nm
nm
The norm is 3:1 or even 4:1. Personally, I transcribe 2:1. nm
x
No, it is NOT the norm. You shouldn't be docked for that! QA
s
If the account specifies that is different. If they don't specify isn't 2 then the norm? nm
nm
I wish I was that fast!---the norm is 3 to 5 minutes - sm
per dictated minute. I only do the 2:1 ratio when I am doing edits.
Not the norm, organic baby greens
with tofu, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, organic corn pasta salad with tofu dill dressing
It does make one wonder how long this is going to go on or is this just the norm now? Terribly sad
I lost my QA job 3 weeks ago because a US company bought the offshore company my original company was using and now brought in their own QA people. Apparently they hope to get these MTs off QA here real soon.... I just gotta laugh... I've been QAing the work for over 2 years and it is the same mistakes day in and day out... they just don't get it and don't care to 'get it'... they get paid no matter what so what is the incentive to learn? These MTs actually argued with me about contractions, etc., like I had no idea what I was doing.... I know you are venting and I hear you and totally understand... it's a sad place MT has gotten to over the last 5-7 years or so in my mind
Timed test the norm for IC job hunting?
I had a response to a job that had a specified time frame for testing. It had to be done withing 2hrs of getting the passcoded from them via email.  I got the email 30 after they sent it and it took forever to do it becuase you couldn't use express scribe/foot pedal. I had to go between word and media player.....and in doing so went over the 2hr limit.  Is this normal for them to do this?
Typically this week is a slow week in lots of places

because it is a big vacation week.  Typically things slow dow a bit in the summer too because people are putting off elective surgery, but at the same time lots of people going on vacation so it should balance out.

Lowest runs $900 week, highest $1400 week (sm)
Get paid 12 CPL. Been doing transcription for about 12 years.
What will happen to us when Electronic Medical Redords become the norm?

I would love to hear everyones 2 cents about Electronic Medical Records....How soon will this be a problem for us? What will we do after they are in most doctors exam rooms?

Let me know what you guys think...Do MT's have a future? or did I just go thru schooling for nothing ...

Well, it seems the norm to me! I've tested with at least 4 co's in the past few years and

the tests were not dictations that I do on an everyday basis.  I know they pick and choose carefully what they will test you on because there are always kinks in there where the doc either stumbles, mumbles, or you know you would have to be a genius to figure out what they are saying.

Those credentials for teachers in public school are NOT the norm...
At my daughter's school when she was in 3rd grade she showed me her final spelling test.  The list contained the words:  You, me, and two, among other similar ones.  My daughter was in the gifted program, and those were her final spelling words in preparation for 4th grade!!  We do NOT have public school teachers with PhD degrees in anything.  They're lucky they have a Bachelor's.  I have a Bachelor's and consider myself quite capable of teaching.  Believe me - all schools are NOT created equal.
I wish you were the norm! Can't find 8.5 cpl for experience out here anymore. You're VERY luck
,
okay, york hospital said they had delivery records, but no prenatal records. sm
they had no idea who she practiced with or anything like that and of course SIL doesn't know any name other than Freundel. i am also a midwife besides being an MT and in order for me to take her given her bicornuate uterus, i have to have her records. i guess delivery records is better than nothing, LOL, but i have to have her prenatal records. i wonder if there is a clinic there or something that med students rotate through. i couldn't even find ms. freundel on AMA, but she may not be through with her training yet either and that is probably why.
I work 6 days a week every other week

Due to my company's payroll (it runs Sun-Sat), I'm able to work a rotating schedule with every other weekend off. Week 1 I work Sunday through Thursday with Fri, Sat, Sun off.  Week 2 I work Monday through Friday with Saturday only off.  Then I'm back to week 1 and get that following weekend off.

I've found that I'm more productive with shorter shifts and I have kids in school anyway, so I work a lot of split shifts during the week.  If possible, you might want to consider cutting back your hours to 30 hours and just work five 6-hour days in split shifts, 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening.

You're probably doing nothing wrong, employee status seems to be the norm with IC status primaril
SE status instead of IC? For me,SE status is heaven -with part of taxes paid and flexibility in my schedule. Have you ever applied to MDI-MD? They only accept qualified, experienced MTs and stress quality in their transcription. From what I read of your qualifications, it sure would be worth contacting them.

Per "see mssgs" comment regarding age discrimination later on in this discussion, I'm 64 - no problem getting hired at a line rate higher than average. Age is not a factor with MDI-MD - knowledge and quality is !!!
The norm is 1 minute = 10 lines; 10 min = 100 lines - sm
granted this varies per dictator. More lines if a fast talker, less if a slow talker.
I have no AC. Will be in 90s again her in WI next week...

Ugh. Ugh. Worst part is my little kids. And, everything feeling sticky. I hate that.

*send me cool breezes* LOL!

Maybe twice a week. That is enough for me. nm
n
$60 a week ($12 a day) nm

Did see that one, but saw one last week where...
this anti child predator group posed as young teenagers on the internet and lured men to a house where  NBC cameras were set up.  In 3 days about 20 men showed up to have sex with 12/13/14 yo boys and girls.  What was shocking was that not all of them were non-functional anti-social types.  Many of them were professionals including a TEACHER, rabbi, ER doctor, etc.  You should have seen their reaction when they realized they were speaking with NBC  Primtime and their faces were going to be showcased on national TV.  Needless to say, the  professional men's lives  have been ruined.  It is scary to  think there are so many seemingly trustworthy men who would show up to have sex with a child.  VERY SCARY.  Lesson for parents.  Don't allow you children to use chat rooms PERIOD!
I wish I saw this last week sm
I just ordered a bunch, but I'll keep track of your web sites and check them out. Thanks for the tip.
She already said 50 hrs per week and
That means she's making around $25 an hour, which is about right for an experienced MT with their own accounts and lots of shortcuts, templates, and expanders. Working for a company and working for self are two completely different ballgames. If you work for a company, then the person you are working for is making 3-4 cpl (at least) more than you are in order to pay you what you make and still earn a profit to run the business. If you work for yourself, then you set the rates based on what you need to make to earn a living. I would say a good average CPL rate for MTs with their own accounts is probably 12-13 cpl so you can do the math. If an MT is working for self making 12 cpl, in order to earn $25 an hour, they'd need to produce 208 lines. Not exactly unrealistic for anyone with experience and expanders, etc.

Sorry if you all aren't making that kind of money, but it can be made if you are good at what you do and you utilize production aids and don't settle for measly 6-cpl jobs.
my first week on my own
Wow.  I started with two companies at once which was dumb, but on is limited and pays better.  Only thing is their software is the most unuser friendly thing and I can't seem to understand.  I have to download the voice files from their site, transfer that name -DSS onto the text name, type the reports in Word and transfer them over too.  It's ridiculous.  Then I started with Infomatics which seems like a sweat shop.  If i made $75 all week, it's a lot.  They finally sent me a food pedal, and would you believe it was defective?  I've used either hot keys or the screen on the monitor. Takes 4 hours to do a 20 minute job, no joke.  They are like a sweatshop.  Got offer from Ameriscribe but don't want to work weekends.  I ran my own service, apparently from the stone age, and this is really a hard transition.  The typing is easy if I had a footpedal and with the other company could understand their stupid, stupid software!  HELP!
I had one the other week who...
kept slamming the receiver down on a hard surface while she paged through the chart.  And then when she picked it up again, she started speaking before she had it close to her mouth, so I lost a lot of what she was saying.  What a pain!
By the way, I was going 2 x a week at first, then 1 x a week and - sm
as I said now once every 2 weeks. As mentioned below avoid those that want to see you every day (I did that once years ago....bill was $600 after 3 days...needless to say I argued the bill and got it knocked down to about $200 and never went back) or use weird gadgets, etc. There are good ones out there.
