Look it's one thing to be cautious, it's another thing to overblow something - this sounds more to me like salesperson with bad judgement.
To be sure, if this had happened to me, I wouldn't have liked it either, and I'd have asked for his ID, name of his company and phone number. If he hesitated in the least, THEN I'd be more concerned, and probably call the authorities so they could on the alert, perhaps question him.
Fortunately for me, Mrs. KRAVITZ (remember her from Bewitched?) lives across the street and so I have a 24/7 surveillence team on duty, for free! LOL
