Both Avast and AVG are great, and FREE

I am a subscriber to Kim Komando because I have learned to absolutely trust her knowledge and expertise in the computer field...here is a link to her page on (mostly) free software downloads that she guarantees are excellent, plus they come WITH no spyware or other bad stuff...
http://www.komando.com/bestshareware.asp

There is no reason to pay for protection when there is a plethora of excellent software out there for free....

Cyberspace has gotten so dangerous that I never download anything w/o checking the Kim Komando website first. You have to trust someone and I trust her - she has never steered me wrong so far.

Good luck to you....:)

AVG anti-virus is great and free!

I found a great free utility...

after making myself nuts and getting lots of technical advice on how to backup AutoText, when what I wanted was to back up AutoCorrect -- I found this great little utility that creates a text document out of your AutoCorrect entries, then you run it again on the Text document to re-create your AutoCorrect if lost.  Click on the link under "Method 1" on this page to download it.  It's a lifesaver!

Great free anti-virus and antispyware programs...
Oh, also... you do need to make sure that you have a great antivirus and anti-spyware program running at all times on your computer. I personally use AVG free version antivirus and SpyBot Search and Destroy for spyware. Check with the repairman you just used for a reliable site to download these (or what he recommends you use) and instructions on how to run them. They have saved my behind numerous times since my crash. (Didn't have them before.)
She's tiny, cute, rich, famous, drug free, and a great singer.
Oh, what a horrible person!  (sarcasm)
I use Avast as well.
I have never had a problem.  When my Norton's ran out I contacted a friend of mine.  Her son lives and breathes computers.  That is what he recommended.  As soon as I loaded it, it found viruses that Norton's had missed.  We have never had a problem either.  As soon as I bought my new computer I loaded it onto it.  It has already caught three Trojan Horses in two months time.  Also, the company's computer guy uses AVG.  He had never heard of Avast.  I am sure you would be safe with either of them.
Avast is one of the better ones,

Avast
Avast antivirus is a good free program that I use on one of my computers.  On the other one I have Zone Alarm antivirus (not the free version with just firewall, the internet suite), and I am happy with both of these.
I use Avast as well.
In the beginning it caught things that Norton did not.  Since then have used nothing else.  Another computer guy loaded AVG on one of my computers, as that was what he recommended.  It did not catch anything that Avast had not caught.  I think either one of them would be good.
I use AVAST and have had absolutely no problems

I use Avast...it updates almost every day and runs in the background....
all the time. If I get an email attachment within attachment from forwards, it checks all of them before I even open it. It's a free program, too.
Avast also recommended by Consumer Reports.

Ewido security, Avast antivirus are what I use.

Abacus is not free. It is $20 but worth it. You can download a trial version free which does not h
I have used this for years and have compared to Sylvan, Word, and MP Count, etc. When you have it set to count every character, bold, shift, tab, etc. It is great and always higher than the others. Now if you are wanting gross lines like in Word then no it won't be as high because Word counts blanks lines and Abacus counts a line only if there is a character on it. There is also two places to check for it to count the Headers/Footers. If you have the FREE version then it must be the trial or a very old version so you don't have all the features and functions.
Free? As in, free trial? Otherwise, I don't think you'll find a spellcheck software that's

Check out the free demo of MTStars FlashType. It's free for 7 days.
Then, if you like it, you can purchase it for $59.95.  See link below.
yes it is free....mine was free....why the exclamation?

There are free ones out there. I have been using a free one for 5 years. sm
Just have to research FTP server software.
free? We are not *free* - what planet R U on?

Free? Liberal?  You know nothing about me......I'm a 4th generation American so don't get up in my face......

We have a bad bad reputation today....and we do NOT HAVE 60 ALLIES/COUNTRIES BACKING US UP IN IRAQ....you better open up your eyes to the REAL stats.  Perhaps in 2003 we had 60 allies/countries backing us up....NAME 60 today.  I can name maybe 10 countries.......

You are terribly off-base.........even the soldiers have spoken up stating *unfortunately, this has become OUR vietnam* -

here's where you might think of beginning...iraqi veterans against the war......not a liberal website by any stretch of the imagination..

Saw him on CMT show with John Fogarty. Great, great singer with a neat personality and drop dead
gorgeous without seeming to know it.
Great post. I swear by both Advantage and Frontline Plus-- both work great! - sm
I don't know about "natural" approaches for the house. I have always used flea bombs in the past before the miracle of Advantage and Frontline changed my life. Have not had a flea problem at all since I began using those products about 10 years ago, dose all the dogs religiously once a month with the Frontline Plus except in Dec.-Feb. to save a few bucks and because the ground is generally frozen by then and no fleas are scurring about. -- Hope you get flea free soon.
Thanks to all. Got some great feedback and ecouragement. This board is great.
My rant passed, ate a late lunch, now back to the trenches.
GREAT GREAT SHOW! I still think Ellen Pompeo
should have gotten the Emmy/Golden Globe whatever it was for the show. I like Sandra Ho, her character just needs more depth... Next week looks AWESOME!! Maybe there is still a chance for McDreamy!! First season DVD coming out with deleted scenes! Can't wait to get it & watch it!!
It is a GREAT company and great deal! I've had
Vonage about 6 months now and I love it. The only mistake I made was trying to keep my original phone # - I wouldn't recommend that. You have a temp # for a while, and the other provider can fight for the old #, etc. Go to vonage. com. They have new features all the time! There is even a new soft phone that is a phone on your screen. You don't need a real phone when working - just headset. It has 800 #s you can have very inexpensively - great voice mail. You get emails when you have new messages, etc. I only wish I had used them a year ago! Nothing but good things to say, and I complain about everything!
Sounds like he will do great then. Again, best wishes for great success!

That's great Patti. Thanks. Have a great time at the beach.

You should feel great as a transcriptionist if they think your work is that great!!!
It is not your fault they approached you. I think it would be a different storey if you were the one searching for the job to take away from a company. They obviously want to get rid of the company and if you didn't take the job they would probably ask someone else. You should enjoy the better position and not feel guilty!!
Great post -great job of wording your answer! (sm)
Original poster - I completely agree with this answer, especially the part about finding yourself and using all that you have learned intellectually and connecting that to something that you will also enjoy with your heart!! You have so many wonderful options for your future - much more than many of us.
IT - great program, great support system. nm

Thanks for all the great advice! You guys are great!

AVG free
I used McAfee, Norton, Panda, etc, all types of viruses and worms slipped through and caused my computer to crash. I now use AVG free edition, free upgrade every day and free check every day of my computer, that I set at at 4:00 a.m. If in doubt try www.worldstart.com, lots of computer geeks there and they will answer your questions about computers, etc on their message board. They have helped me a few times with reliable, good information about many different problems on my computer. Good luck.
PGP (it's free) nm

Nothing is free!!
My family is in the restaurant business and I can cook like a maniac .. so screw the free meal stuff!!  I am over 50 .. look great for my age .. make very good money .. have no bills .. and though my daughter lives here she is 32 and wishes I would meet someone and cut her a break!!  I was a nurse in another life.  Do I want to take care of someone whose body is in worse shape than mine .. no; do I want to cook for someone who makes a mess I have to clean just because the moron breathes .. no; do I want to hear the constant whining, burping, farting, dribbling, and all that other geezer stuff .. a thousand times no!!  So, I find a guy who is 10 years younger than me and he is crazy about me and likes my old body, and we get along great .. but I have issues with the 10 years and I feel I am more than a wild piece of keister and nothing is free .. and that is on a good day!!  LOL!  Oh, yes, and he is cute as a button too .. I must be over the edge.  Maybe not
Can anyone tell me what the name of the free SM

wav player is?  I think it is E something or the other.

Thanks for your help.

Please tell me the name of a FREE
Thanks!
This one is not free. If someone KNOWS of one
Thanks.
I don't think there is another free one
There are different footpedals available though, and not all are interchangeable between transcription modules. I have two pedals, one that I ordered to use with Express Scribe that connects via serial port, and then I got a new computer that did not have the serial port and I also began using the Olympus module, and so I ordered the Olympus pedal, which has two connector ends that you can switch so that you can connect via either serial port or USB.

I am not sure why the pedals are not interchangeable (some of them can be used with more than one module, but I just do not know how to tell the difference other than ordering the pedal based on recommendations from the software manuf. of the transcription module).

I also have had a problem with the Olympus pedal that started after I began loading .wav files into it. It is made to be used with .dss files, but plays .wav and other file types as well, but when I have been away from the computer for a while or when I have closed the programs and reopen them, I often times will have to reach behind my tower and unplug the pedal and then plug it back in. I am not sure what has caused the problem though because for the first couple of months using the Olympus I never had to do that.
AVG is free

...or you can do it for free (sm)

by eating less and exercising more.  I'm not being a smarty, but this method had me from 235.5 pounds to the 119 pounds I am now, so I'm just speaking from experience.  I even kept it off through a pregnancy because I learned how to eat regular food in an intelligent way.

These weight loss plans do NOT offer the secret code.  It's within the person who wants to lose weight!

I'm getting it for free
We bought a couple of new HP computers this fall and we get a a copy for free, which we should get within a couple of weeks. We will probably install in on a spare computer to see what it is like before putting it on our new ones. Hopefully the software that we use for work will be compatible with it!
Do you want to pay for it or want for free?

Do you want to pay for it or want it for free?

No fee; it is free
There is no fee; you must have clicked the wrong button.  I'm sending the signatures myself (out of my pocket) to DC.  Try again; no fee to sign it.  It is free.  http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/medrecords/
I use AVG Free.
I bought a refurbished hard drive and loaded microsoft office 2003.  So many companies are not allowing Vista or 2007, so I felt this was the way to go.  I have had good luck so far and a great running system.
I use AVG Free also. I also have several other
programs for adware, malware, and spyware. I usually search Kim Komando's site for things like that. I find that she is pretty much on the mark with her choices, recommendations, etc. When I hear that I "need" to install something, I figure if I don't know what it will do or not do, then I just leave it alone. A good running computer is a happy computer. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Not OP but I have done this for free too
I go in through the IRS's website and select Free E-File and go from there. You can choose from several different software programs. I have used H&R Block for the past 3 years this way and have never paid a dime.
AVG Free
This is an anti-virus program that has been recommended by all my "tech gurus" including Hiwired.com -- its free and comes HIGHLY recommended.
Hey a free one!
I'll check that out too. Thanks!
free
I think it expires in 60 or 90 days.  Then you have to pay
