Chilling.
I wonder if they are truly as efficient as they claim to be in the article- it doesn't strike me as very plausible. But it is the cost factor that is the threat. I'm very lucky- our hospital system has pledged they will never outsource overseas. Of course I realize that promise could be broken down the line but at least I know they are firmly against it no matter how much money it would save.

New Orleans: A Disaster Waiting to Happen
by George E. Curry
NNPA columnist
Originally posted 9/1/2005

"
I am angry. I am angry at the mayor of New Orleans. I am angry at the governor of Louisiana. I am angry at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). I am angry at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), now part of the Department of Homeland Security. I am angry at George W. Bush. I am angry because they were warned last November that New Orleans was one of the “Disasters Waiting to Happen” – and did nothing about it. Consequently, hundreds, if not thousands, of people are dead. Needlessly.

In an eerie prediction of what happened as a result of Hurricane Katrina, an article titled, “What if Hurricane Ivan Had Not Missed New Orleans?” was published in the Natural Hazards Observer, a major journal headquartered at the University of Colorado in Boulder. It was written by Shirley Laska of the Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology at the University of New Orleans. In other words, this was an article written by a reputable author in a reputable national publication that should have been read by people involved in disaster relief. If they had taken heed, many of the dead in New Orleans would be alive today.

Under the headline, “What if Ivan Had Hit New Orleans?” the author wrote, “New Orleans was spared this time, but had it not been, Hurricane Ivan would have:

- Pushed a 17-foot storm surge into Lake Pontchartrain;

- Caused the levees between the lake and the city to overtop and fill the city ‘bowl’ with water from lake levee to river levee, in some places as deep as 20 feet;

- Flooded the north shore suburbs as much as seven miles inland; and

- Inundated inhabited areas south of the Mississippi River.

“Up to 80 percent of the structures in these flooded areas would have been severely damaged from wind and water. The potential for such extensive flooding and the resulting damage is the result of a levee system that is unable to keep up with the increasing flood threats from a rapidly eroding coastline and thus unable to protect the ever-subsiding landscape.”

Until I read this article, I had said one of the positive things that I hoped would come out of this disaster is that relief experts would realize that they need to make special provisions for the poor, elderly and homeless. In essence, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Now, however, I realize that there is no benefit in doubt.

The warning was there in black and white:

“For those without means, the medically challenged, residents without personal transportation, and the homeless, evacuation requires significant assistance.”

Laska spelled it out in even more detail.

During Hurricane Ivan in 2004, she continues, ‘Residents who did not have personal transportation were unable to evacuate even if they wanted to.
Approximately 120,000 residents (51,000 housing units x 2.4 persons/unit) do not have cars.

“A proposal made after the evacuation from Hurricane Georges to use public transit buses to assist in their evacuation out of the city was not implemented for Ivan. If Ivan had struck New Orleans directly it is estimated that 40-60,000 residents of the area would have perished.”

The additional problem of people having the means to leave, but refusing to do so was addressed in the article.

“Researchers have estimated that prior to a ‘big one,’ approximately 700,000 residents of the greater New Orleans area (out of 1.2 million) would evacuate,” Laska wrote. “In the case of Hurricane Ivan, officials estimate that up to 600,000 evacuated from metropolitan New Orleans between daybreak on Monday, September 13 and noon on Wednesday, September 13, when the storm turned and major roads started to clear…

“The fact that 600,000 residents evacuated means an equal number did not. Recent evacuation surveys show that two thirds of nonevacuees with the means to evacuate chose not to leave because they felt safe in their homes. Other nonevacuees with means relied on a cultural tradition of not leaving or were discouraged by negative experiences with past evacuations.”

Those that dismiss environmentalists as kooks, should pay special attention to the observations about marshes.

“Loss of the coastal marshes that dampened earlier storm surges puts the city at increasing risk to hurricanes,” the article noted. “Eighty years of substantial river leveeing has prevented spring flood deposition of new layers of sediment into the marshes, and a similarly lengthy period of marsh excavation activities related to oil and gas exploration and transportation canals for the petrochemical industry have threatened marsh integrity.”

Using the Hurricane Ivan model to predict what would happen if a major hurricane struck New Orleans, Laska wrote: “Should this disaster become a reality, it would undoubtedly be one of the greatest disasters, if not the greatest, to hit the United States, with estimated costs exceeding 100 billion dollars. According to the Red Cross, such an event could be even more devastating than a major earthquake in California. Survivors would have to endure conditions never before experienced in a North American disaster.”

It ended, “The hurricane scenario for New Orleans that these conveying risks portend is almost unimaginable. Hurricane Ivan had the potential to make the unthinkable a reality. Next time New Orleans may not be so fortunate.”

Baking without flour everywhere
I think the only way to be able to do it is to have plenty of time and clean up after every step for lack of anything better to do.  Now the only  problem is getting my big kid (DH) to keep his meat hooks out of the freezer!  Discovered he had snuck all of my peanut butter blossoms out  and ate them right up.  Oh, well, I'll make some more.  LOL  I love to bake and love to eat the stuff too but unfortunately  just recently was diagnosed with AODM so there goes the sugar for me.
Eeeewww - I have enough for my Christmas baking

What kind of fish are you baking? (nm)

Need help quick! I am in the middle of baking cupcakes for

tomorrow and i only have 2 eggs and recipe on box calls for 3. Does anyone know what will happen if I use the 2? I live in the country and the store is way too far to get eggs. No neighbors either! :)

What would you do? Go ahead and try it or ditch it altogether? I was in the middle of mixing when I saw I needed 3 eggs!!!! Thanks so much!

baking powder or soda for height...nm

1 heaping *tablespoon* of baking powder?!
nm
Let's see, just got through baking cheese straws, bran muffins,
fruit cake cookies and cheese/sausage balls and DH just came home with a big bag of almond M&Ms.   Probably have a Pepsi to go with it.  No veggies but I think we got all the other food groups - LOL.
Baking Soda-make a paste with a little water. That's all I use. (nm)

Baking soda, opened and on its side, in every corner

If it isn't a real high traffic area, sprinkle baking soda on it, leave it overnight,
and vacuum it in the morning. Good luck!
Vacuum the house a lot, garlic powder and brewer's yeast (not baking yeast) sm,,,
in all the dogs' food, and definitely give the little one a bath. You'll  need to comb the fleas and their dander and eggs out wtih a flea comb. My dogs used to love this. During flea season, I'd get on the floor and comb them after dinner every night. Have a bowl of soapy water handy (with the flea soap if possible) and dip the comb in the bowl when you start and especially after you find the fleas (and ticks!) on the comb to drown them. Residual soap will help keep them off the pooch. Fleas congregate at the base of the tail and in the groin area. Get puppy used to combing and he/she will come to love it as part of normal grooming. An herbal flea collar might help, too. The other dogs will need to be watched for fleas, too. Good luck!
OJ is what helps me
I think it is the sugar in the juice because no one tells you that smoking digests food quicker (read that somewhere) so it will take longer for a person who stopped smoking to feel better after eating... So when I feel low I drink some juice... hope this helps
Thank you so much - yes that helps! nm

If this helps,
My Stedman's spell check accepts antiinflammatory.  I read somewhere that we are we are not supposed to hyphenate unless the nonhyphenated word form is another separate word.  I do not remember the examples they gave, but it did make sense.

Yes, that helps, thanks.

Not sure if this helps

Perhaps they gave you a generic contract or info sheet, you need to ask if you are to print and return or send back and they print.  Also call in services charge per minute of dictation anywhere from 0.18 to 0.10 per minute of dictation.  So more than how many lines, you need to know minute as if they are stuttering a lot or going through a chart and not dictating you will be charged for the minutes that they use whether dictating or not.  What city/state are you in, will you be contracting out, and again find out if you have to print or they print.  Sometimes the contracts that they send our are generic and do not specify which services you will be providing and you need to clarify that.   So you need to ask a few more questions, also see if they deduct or penalize if you do not meet your TAT.   But without know the above, to me it would be like throwing a dart at a dart board trying to make a bullseye.

This helps me........sm
I get up and wrap my arms around myself in a big bear hug as tight as I can to stretch out the back muscles. I bend over and let my arms dangle until my fingers eventually touch the ground, if you're one like me who cannot flat palm the floor with straight legs (my MIL at 70 could!). This really stretches out everything. I get a lot of relief in the neck by doing chin tucks to the chest and relaxing there for a couple of minutes.

This is a trick a PT told me...while sitting in a chair with your legs a foot or so apart, bend over with your arms inside the leg area and grab for the floor...this really stretches out the upper back.

I know what you mean though -my muscles will burn in my arms and shoot pains through to my hands. Hope this helps!
That helps a lot.
Thank you so much.
yes it helps a lot --

but do you plug Lanier into a phone line? I am not familiar with Lanier.

Not that it helps but...
Not sure if this is being used in word? However and FYI for those who might need it, if you type LEE and it expands, do ALT E and enter, which is for unedit and it will return to the abbreviated text.
yes, that helps

That seems like it would be very time consuming!  I'm using a pedal now and can't imagine controlling my dictations without it.  Doesn't that take away from a lot of typing time?

Black-out drapes purchased at K-mart and a black sleep mask ($3 from a catalog) have been a tremendous help in getting/staying asleep when you have to sleep during the day.
Hopefully this helps! (sm)
Turn on or off automatic bulleted or numbered lists:

On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
Under Apply as you type, select or clear the Automatic bulleted lists or Automatic numbered lists check box.

This is a VA account? The VA pretty much expects contractors to pay their workers. If you're not working for this woman any longer, you might try complaining to the facility that you have not been paid. Try calling purchasing and contracting, as well as the chief of HIM. You can get the main phone numbers on the VA website--just Google it.

Don't know if this helps...
... but here is a shot of my left hand, on the keyboard, in its usual typing position. (The right hand is holding the camera.) It's hard to tell... but hopefully you can see that my wrist is absolutely flat, and my hand comes straight off my forearm without any angle to either side.

Because I have a curved keyboard, the wrist rest is an Imak Ergo Beans beanbag, which of course conforms to any keyboard. I picked it up at Office Depot for pretty cheap. The keyboard is the Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 which costs under 20 bucks and has pretty decent action. The curve is actually pretty slight---but it's JUST enough to straighten out those lateral wrist angles that first gave me tendinitis back in the old typewriter days.

What you can't really see is that the heel of my hand is resting on a wrist-rest, which is at a height that keeps everything perfectly level. And what you can't see at all is that my forearms are basically parallel to the floor, with my elbows tight at my sides. It took a good bit of chair and desk height fiddling to get this combination right; but believe me, it is WORTH IT!

Anyway... see what you can do to get your wrists into as neutral positions as possible, both vertical and horizontal. And do try wrapping with an Ace bandage--even if only at night, to keep yourself from sleeping on it "wrong." (I do that from time to time. Not fun.)

Best of luck, and keep us posted on how it goes!
Thank you so much...it helps, even if you're not my QA! nm

I have a Stedman's 3rd ed. (2003) that I purchased new (still in plastic) off of Amazon for $22.  I like the HPI books, but I have never used the psych one, so I don't know how much difference there is, but I do know you can get the Stedman's cheaper than $36.  Another book that I used a lot is the PDR Drug Guide for Mental Health Professionals 2nd ed.  I bought it at Books a Million.  I don't use it as much now since I am familiar with the meds, but it was great when I started doing psych because it only has the types of meds related to mental health in it.  Check ebay and Amazon for books.  They are SO much cheaper.  I have bought almost all of my ref. books that way.  Good luck!  I love doing psych.
Hope it helps

Thank you - that helps immensly

Thank you.  That definitely helps me a lot.  The more I think about it, the more I realize that I am happy where I am and if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?!  Plus, I am in a position where I can extend myself a bit and make more where I am, so not sure the switch would be a great idea.

Thanks again!

running a fan helps too

Yep. I had 2 scares within 2 weeks of each other. Found blood on the tissue very similar to when I start my period (I was 8 weeks and 10 week both times it happened). Hubby rushed me to the ER and after blood tests and ultrasounds I checked out OK. I'm now almost 18 weeks along with baby #3

I also had this with my son (second pregnancy) about 7 years ago. I happened almost every week. I carried him to term with no additional complications. And, with both of these pregnancies the bleeding ceased once I was out of the first trimester.

Hang in there.

That helps a LOT, Elaine! Thank you!
