Interesting article. I think this happens in medicine too. I typed a note once on a patient who had passed out in the street. They ran all sorts of tests--CTs, MRIs, EKGs, and so on. Well, this patient was homeless and hadn't eaten in a week. Once they gave him a sandwich and some orange juice (about $3.50) he perked right up. Humm....
