Gloria Gaynor's I WILL SURVIVE comes to mind...
Good Luck to both!  Just an aside, that song was out when I was going through a separation/divorce, was my theme song!
Gloria, it can be done--I did it!

As a medical secretary of 10 years, I moved from Massachusetts to central Maine and found a dirty surprise waiting for me....absolutely NO work, not even as a cashier!

I scoured the paper every week looking for something, anything, and then I found an ad for a local transcription company that was actively hiring transcriptionists.  I had done odd typing jobs in all the doctor's offices (multiple specialties, so that helped me), just letters and SOAP notes, but certainly not a ton of them, but I had nothing to lose, so I sent in my resume and scored an interview.  They set me down at a PC and Dictaphone and gave me a typing test, and I didn't do all that bad at all.  They said they were willing to train me if I was willing to sit down with an AAMT book and learn all that I could, and you bet your bippie that is just what I did!  After about 2 weeks of training, the company owner handed me a little book called "Medical Abbreviations" and said "Let's get you started working at home."  My jaw dropped and I said, "You mean your actually going to hire me?!"  She laughed and said I was hired two weeks ago!  I could've hugged her I was so happy.

My husband and I were flat broke, eating ramen noodles, and buying home heating oil a few gallons at a time down at the local gas station.  We were in a sad, sad state.  I have never been so grateful for a chance in my life.

Companies like that are rare, but they are out there, and if you are willing to learn, admit to mistakes, fix them and learn from them, you can do it!  This sounds gay, but "I'm living proof!"

Best of luck OP!

Who hurt you so much that your post are consistently filled wth ANGER, DISDAIN, and WRATH. Do you have anything positive to say?
Trying to survive
I also shop at the 99 cent store.  They also have one that I call the "dented can store".  Most of my clothes come from thrift stores (whenever I buy any).  I guess that's why we make our "big bucks" as MTs so we can shop at all the "top of the line" stores, huh?
yes, you are going to survive...
Do you have a mentor or a friend who is an MT that you send IMs to asking for help when you run into problems. That is always good for new MTs working at home. Hang in there, take it slow with bad ones, and soon, you will be moving right along.

Give it up......Gloria
I do not believe you have the
mental stability to be dealing with such an emotionally charged issue as giving an MT a fair wage, or the public. If you cannot make a living as an MTSO do all your MTs a favor and get out of the business.
Gloria, you have had your say and everyone has heard you...now will you please go away? I for one w

Have become a single parent...how to survive

Hello.

First, I want to apologize if this is not on the right board.  I wasn't sure where to put it.

Second, I am not looking for pity...just advice.

I have two wonderful children (a 5 year old and a 5 month old) who are my life and because of that I have left there father (verbally abusive to everyone) to make a better life for all of us.  I am a new MT (have only been in the business for 4 months now and make enough to pay rent but that is all.  With an infant it is hard to work during the day so I start my work around 7pm and work until it is done.  I am not that fast yet but am gaining speed and could handle another small account.  Can anyone tell me how they have made single parenting work as an MT or have any ideas on how to make it work, please.  I am deperate to stay home with them.  Honestly, daycare cost would kill my paycheck if I had to work outside of the home and I am trying to stay off of government support.

I appreciate any help or advice I receive.

Thank you.

We were prepared to survive 3 weeks cut off from the outside world.

We moved out of Florida after getting hit with 3 hurricanes last summer, but since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, we took it very seriously.  As long as the roof held, we had 3 weeks of emergency canned goods, batteries, a portable TV and radio, oil lamps, sterno, pallets of bottled drinking water and at least 120 gallons of stored water in containers tinctured with bleach for personal hygiene and flushing toilets.  Cars gas tanks were topped off before the hurricane.

I no longer live in Florida, but everybody should always have some emergency supplies and extra food and water on hand.  Every part of the country has some kind of weather or power outages at times.  My parents lived during the depression and taught us to be self sufficient and never wait for a hand out.

[Sigh] .... I meant 'CAN'T' survive on less.
.
No you can't survive on sex and chocolate but will die happy probably pretty quickly.
It would be a bummer to watch Johnny Dep get old and cranky anyway.
They stay because the system is crooked, it's hard to survive,

Gloria, do not speak for me. I never said I wanted bennies, and other perks a corporate executive e
I simply want an MT job where I am fairly compensated for the work I do. I never asked for or expected the bennies and perks...just a fair wage with a good company. The only other thing I would like to hear from you is the name of your company so I can STAY AWAY FROM IT!
