I always provide a list of changes, whether it was something the MT flagged or not. I realize there is a learning curve, and I feel it's MY job to provide feedback. Some things come up again and again, so providing feedback is crucial to the learning process.

If someone doesn't improve after a few weeks, then I'll say "look, these are some areas that need to improve," and give them another few weeks. After that, I have no choice but to let them go. I won't bring someone on to work with me unless they have at least 5 years' experience, so I think six weeks is ample time for an experienced MT to settle in and start to feel comfortable. Otherwise, it's just not the right fit.

I certainly realize everyone has good days and bad days, myself included, and I know there will always be some blanks ... as you said, no one is perfect. However, when there are consistently typos and nonsense phrases, that's not just a "bad day," so what's a person to do? I wouldn't want someone to spend a lot of time looking up doctor names, etc. However, if it's a medical term/phase, grammar rule, etc., that I should know in the scope of MT, then I will spend the time necessary to find it. That loss in production is my own fault for not being adequately trained or prepared to do my job, IMO.

As stated, I'm a working MT myself, so it's not like I don't know what goes into the job. Maybe I even expect TOO much as a result, I don't know, but I really don't think so. Is asking for as near to client-ready work as humanly possible asking too much? If I can't hear it or don't know it, I most certainly don't expect someone else to, either, but if I can hear it or find it in a search that takes less than 1 minute, I expect a similar effort. Is that expecting too much?
