I have the same problem... sm

I have encountered the same problem repeatedly, unfortunately. You have to cut them loose. You are probably not making any money after paying them due to the time you have to spend proofing/editing. You can't be "nice" in business if you want to turn a profit. You can't hire someone merely because they are nice and you can't keep them on for that reason, either.

I just don't understand these careless mistakes. As someone said above, turn on spellcheck so it checks as you type! Turn on the grammar check, too, while you're at it. BUT don't rely SOLELY on those tools, either - they offer suggestions and aren't always right. If something doesn't sound right or make sense, look it up or flag it!! I'd rather see a flag any day than a nonsense word or abbreviation.

Also, these same MTs are requesting upwards of 13-15 cpl to START, don't think they should have to test, don't have time to test, etc. If they don't have time to test, that just indicates they probably wouldn't have time to work, either. Why apply if you know you won't have time to test? And how many places hire without testing? I know of a few, but in general, most places require some type of test or proof of ability - and many require rather extensive testing! For that matter, what places pay 13-15 cpl to start?? Please let me know so I can go apply!! I seriously would like to know!

I fear people are more concerned about speed for the sake of their own production than accuracy. A speedy TAT doesn't mean anything if the final document is full of careless errors. It causes more work and time for me, thus defeating the purpose of hiring help in the first place. If I turned in one of those reports to my clients without proofing, I wouldn't HAVE clients. Plain and simple. And I can do the work myself in the amount of time it takes to listen and edit. I know there's a learning curve, but some of these mistakes can't even be justified within the bounds of a learning curve.

And for those who will immediately say it must be because I offered crappy line rates, crappy accounts, or whatever, let me assure you I was offering a nice line rate and my accounts are rather easy. I'm not stingy or greedy. I am an MT myself so I think I have a good bead on what most desire in a position. I just wanted someone whose work doesn't require extensive proofing and editing so I can spend my time producing my OWN lines! I've hired off and on for the last 8 years, and I have yet to find that person.
