Ask around, friends, etc. There are good dentists out there
I am a total baby, I can't tolerate one second of that nerve type pain and what I thought were panic attacks/heart racing was actually a side effect of novocaine.

I went to one dentist and had a deep filling and he couldn't numb it in what seemed like just one tiny spot, I complained whenever he would hit that spot and he kept giving me more novocaine and I would up with very bad palpitations.

In the end I think he began to avoid that spot and the tooth was not done properly and I ended up having to have a root canal.

When I went to the next guy I told him what happened. Since I had palpitations with the novocaine, they gave me a different anesthesia, carbocaine. I ran my tongue over the area while it was numbing and if I felt anything I said I still have some feeling right here, etc. And I got another needle. No palpitations at all and I didn't feel a thing. The entire area was numb for around 8 hours so that was weird but better than pain.

Try another dentist and explain your fears and your last experience. You really need to have this done.

If I can do it, you can.

One of my best friends has a good friend who is a chiropractor -sm
She (my friend) knows all the ins and outs. So when I was in a car accident in 10/05 I asked her....I had run into the money machine chiropractors before in the past and my SIL sees a real quack who has her basically living on herbal pills (she barely eats), and has her kids on them too. So my experience was a bit jaded. She said if you went to one who got their schooling at Palmer College of Chiropractors, then they should be a good chiropractor and be "straight" and practice straight chiropractic care and not be out to rape your wallet and use gadgets, etc. I heeded her advice and now am seeing a Palmer graduate and have been very happy with my care and my back is tons better now (after I was told there was nothing that could be done by my orthopedist). It did not happen overnight, took about 2-3 months, about $45 a visit. She "adjusts" (cracks) my back, neck and hips. I have had one "relapse" so to speak (which can happen and is normal) but that is on the mend now. I now only go every 2 weeks. I will probably continue to see her even after I sign off on the accident (my health insurance covers $1000 of chiropractic care a year, so I will be covered which is nice at 2 visits a month pretty much). As long as you don't go to a quack, I think it would probably help you but don't expect miracles overnight, takes a little time to feel better. Good luck.
Voted for Sniffles and Friends..Good luck !..nm

I used to work in a clinic, and have friends who do now.

7 years ago I worked in a clinic and lost the job when the clinic joined a larger physician group who outsourced transcription.  I went to work for the company they were using then.  With that change I almost doubled my income.  That MTSO later went out of business.  Ironically, now I work for the MTSO who currently has that account.  Some of my coworkers with the first company have gone to work for a large clinic in the area who has brought some MT work back in-house.  They took a cut in pay but have better benefits and much better hours.  I have found that you pretty much have to be in the right place at the right time, or know somebody.  The first clinic job I got was when I went to apply at the local hospital and the director at the hospital sent me over to the clinic.  Almost all of the opportunities I have gotten over the years have come from knowing someone.  Sometimes the best thing to do is to ask around.  I know a lot of transcriptionists in the area, and several people who work in clinics in the area.  This is where I get most of my leads.

Do you know any IC transcriptionists or friends who work in doctors' offices?
That is how I got started. A good friend worked for herself and had no coverage for vacations. I covered a vacation, then a day or two a week, which eventually worked into full time. I also did prn work for local offices.
    Friends, really miss Friends :-(

Is 5 cpl for VR work good?
I was just offered a job from Transcend and have read that most of their work is VR. Is 5 cpl any good? I really want to learn VR because it looks like that is where the future is headed. I used to be offered 9 cpl for straight transcription, and now I have to beg for 8 cpl for clinic work.
Good for you! But not where I work.

    Thus -- the pay stinks!

    good companies to work for

    Hi,

I am a recent M-TEC grad who is beginning the job search. Does anyone have any companies that they really like working for or have heard good things about? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Jen

    Good companies to work for.

I have found Spheris to be an excellent company to work for.  They provide you with the equipment and with on-line paid classes to teach you their system.  The supervisors and help personnel are terrific.  You set your hours and can have as much work as you want without ever running out.  They have terrific benefits and fun things to do and an on line info system that teaches you whatever you need to know about medical transcription.  I have been self-employed, and have worked in a clinic for 15+ years and find Spheris to be the best of all.  Good luck in your search!

    Dee

    Good companies to work for
I disagree with Spheris being a good place to work. As a newbie, you should stick with a smaller company. Somewhere where you will get individual attention and not be lost in the shuffle of a huge company. If you are placed on the right team, you might be okay. If you are placed on one of the teams with incompetent managers or supervisors, you are destined for doom. Just my personal opinion.
    Good Company to Work For
I really need to make a change.  Can those of you out there that REALLY LIKE the company you work for send me a line?  I have already applied to quite a few, and now it's decision time.  I appreciate any input you can give me.    Thanks in advance!    PJ
You are just too funny. Keep up the good work

I'm 120 now from previous 150.  I know that doesn't sound like much, but I just make 5 foot 2 if I stand up perfectly straight. So I guess I've lost quite a bit of "butter."

I do have tons of butter on hand to bake with and I bake all the time, but I don't eat the stuff that I make.  I feed it to my tall skinny hubby and all 4 tall skinny kids.  It's just NOT fair!

You learn as you go. Keep up the good work.
Despite the occasional nastiness of this board,  the majority of posters are very helpful.  I've always found it a great help when you need it.
MQ was a good place to work
I have been with them for 6 years and before that with another company. I have been extremely happy working for MQ; but too many things are changing and it is a very uncomfortable feeling. I wish I still had my old office to work from but unfortunately I have no say.

I might be checking out the grass on the other side to see if it is really any greener. What do I have to lose? I am no longer happy.

I wish you well and hopefully your office won't be closed and you are transferred into unfamilar territory.
Medware - Are they really a good co to work for? Thanks.
    nm
SS is a good company. I work as QA though so I don't know from
an MT perspective on the work load. Been with them almost a year.
Congratulations! Keep up the good work and...
    thanks for this site.
There ARE good places to work for out there

Congratulations! I'm glad you found a job that works for you.

I, too, have found my niche. It's pretty unique and probably wouldn't work for anybody else, but it works for me.

Good MTs won't work for 7-8 cpl. Pay decent $
    a
So, who's a good company to work for?
I have 8 years of experience in many MT specialties. What are the best companies that are HIRING? TIA.
I have heard both good and bad--and I work there.
I am a recent transplant due to the company I was working for, TRS, being acquired by Transcend on April 1. No fooling. So far, so good....

If I remember correctly, according to their website, they require 5 years of acute care experience--which, when I was looking for a job, I did not have, and therefore they would not even let me test. And now they've got me anyway. Go figure.

My own experience has been fine so far, but I am still working under my former TRS supervisors, on the same accounts. Others' mileage may vary.

Please feel free to e-mail if you think I can answer any more questions. I am crankybeach at yahoo dot com.
    before slamming starts..pay is good..work is there..sm

before the naysayers (or the ones cycling through the system) start, we pay top money, always have AND the work is there...have never had complaints of not enough work.  I have had people claiming to do 100+ reports a day that do 20 a week...I have had MTs claiming that they have never had reports returned and yet every report they produce is full of errors or blanks.  So either there are clients out there that take anything produced and have editors they pay to fix everything or these people are in LALALALALAL land.

I have had seasoned MTs apply that can not produce quality work...so while I have "been there and done that" as to working for national companies that give you 3 or more accounts because they over hire...worked for national companies that get you up and running then switch you to ESL only accounts so you never make bonus or even lines for the day...I have also been on the end of hiring and setting up people that have stolen equipment, programs and clients.  I have hired people after good screening that have never started work, or worked one day and then never worked again.

It is a two way street...there are good MTs (all of which must be working because I sure have not found any lately) and there are bad..the same bad ones that slam newbies on the boards or give snippy answers for everything posted.  AND htere are bad MTSOs out there too.  Not everyone is a perfect match for each other, but as someone that has been on both sides, it gets old to constantly hear about the bad MTSO or even national companies, but we never hear ANYTHING about the bad MTs that are out there...and there are...ask any MTSO :-)

Good thing you work at home
Hopefully one day when you need to vent, you at not treated the way you treat others but what goes around does come around.
Good accounts and plenty of work. sm
PT line count is 6000 per pay period; FT is 12000.
Yes, but can you transcribe? Do you have good work ethics?

Yes, but can you transcribe an easy 2 minute dictation in under an hour?
Do you have good work ethics?  Which, begs the question, do you know the definition of ethics?
Can you stick to days and hours you agreed to?
Can you not make up excuses for not working?
Can you stay in your chair and not a leave a job hanging for hours on end?
Are you in this century regarding technology? Which, also begs the question, can you download, install, configure, and operate the newer programs that MTSOs are using?

If you answered no to any of these questions, you're in the wrong industry and from what this MTSO has been getting lately, there are a lot of you out there who have absolutely no business trying to work in this industry.

Thank you, sounds like you work for good people....
I think no matter where you go it has its little ups and downs. Have a good day and thank you for responding.
can't imagine doing good work at home
(no buddy-help) without MT training, and getting good QA scores. There's too bloody-much detail anymore, ie, all the BOS rules, on top of account specifics, terminology, accents, etc... I have seen a couple people pick up the terminology and do well with only on-the-job training in the hospital setting, but that seems rather rare.
iChart...is this a good or bad platform to work on?

Any info appreciated.  I have never worked on this platform.  TIA

Good luck, what line are work are you in now? nm
    x
Poll: What do you consider a good income for MT work currently?

You can answer in your subject line.  Talking about gross annual income:

    1)  $20,000 to $30,000

    2)  $30,000 to $40,000

    3)  $40,000 to $45,000

    4)  $45,000 to $50,000

    5)  $50,000 and up

    6)  $60,000 and up

MT work - IC or employee or MTSO, even QA work could be included here.

Because MTs in the US become the "editors" to fix their work and make them look good. nm

A little help from my *friends*
I have been doing this for 36 years and I have used word expanders and normals for more than 20 years.  It sure helps when you are typing *the patient* practically every paragraph.  I just type tpt and viola...same with the headings, Review of Systems, etc.  Every little bit helps.  To those who dont use expanders and normals, just think how much more money you could be making and how less tired and sore you would be at the end of the day.  *Long live the expanders*.

My daughter is 20 and I still can't stand her friends...........
    friends.
Excellent post. Your kids are lucky to have parents like you and your husband.

One of my friends did that...
for the exact same reason.  However, their first ceremony was private, and they did not expect anyone to give them gifts for both weddings.  But in your case, I would think a gift for the first wedding would be more helpful to them since they may not have all the things they need for their home together.  I certainly would not feel the need to buy for both ceremonies.
    have many friends? lol
    lololol
    Looking for old friends

I have been trying to locate some people form my old High School - Figured with all of you out there someone might know someone and pass this on. I went to Garrett Hign School during 1977 thru 1981.

Sonia Suppan Bugher and Carissa Babson Snyder

Lost track of them many years ago, and there are so many people looking for them now - we were all concerned when they disappeared. Last I heard Carissa was in NC and Sonia in Oklahoma. Tried classmates.com and theya r elisted as "missing" LOL. Who knows maybe they are MT's too.

You are in need of some friends.
    Q
I have friends here in ND who say it too.
And, I grew up with an English teacher for my mother, so I know what you mean. Always corrected but now I have a great grasp of the English language.
I currently work for Transhealth. I tihnk it is a good company.
    :)
Depending on who you work for.... you can make good money

I usually average between $15-25 an hour doing VR. That is enough for me. I think it helps if you have companies that pay for footers, headers, spaces etc.. Good luck.

I work 2 jobs and have my hours set pretty good. First

job is Sun through Wed 6 am to 2:30 pm, since we only need 32 hours for benefits. Second job is 8-11 pm Sun through Wed. I work both jobs at home so on Thurs. and Fri. I volunteer at the middle school so I get a chance to get out of the house and deal with other people. I got lucky because both jobs pay every other week but on different weeks so it worked out that I get paid every week.

I need help finding a good company with steady work..sm
that pays a minimum of 10 cents a line.  I have been an MT for 27 years and I take pride in my work.  Things have changed at my current company and cherry pickers have taken over so I end up doing all the reports no one else wants to do.  This takes me longer and my line count is suffering.  I know there have to be good companies out there that pay well and need good employees.  I have left my email address if anyone would like to offer me some hope and share names of companies.  Please no flames, I am just an honest MT wanting an honest job with decent compensation. Thanks for any help.
BUT, you are brilliant. Keep up the good work! You are my hero for today! nm
