local MTSO.   Currently work for a small national and while I don't have babies anymore, the MTSO is a mother herself and is very understanding and allows me some flexibility because she knows I am reliable and good at what I do.

Every company is different -- I worked FT for one as an employee but worked a split shift - sm
So I never took breaks. I would work 5 hours, break for about 4 hours then do another 3. Another company I worked for did not care what hours you worked (IC) but wanted a min. amount of work each day, 500 for PT and 1000 for FT-- BUT they paid you by how many lines an hour you put out, the higher the lph the higher up the scale you made per line in pay; they have since changed everyone to a flat rate with incentive. But bottom line, if you are an IC it does not matter what hours you work, though many ask for a schedule and ask you to stick to it, they just want you to meet line requirements daily, i.e. 1000 per day, 1200 per day, whatever it is.

When I worked as an employee we just had to IM - sm
if we were stepping away from our desk for lunch,etc. Just so they knew why you weren't working. Personally I did not like that aspect of it, big brother watching and all that. I only worked when the kids were not home and tried not to answer the phone. As for power outages, I have 2 backups, a 20 minute battery back up for my computer so I don't lose work and can power down, and if power is out for too long, we have a generator I can fire up...as long as the phone lines aren't down as well (dial-up). But I am sure you can always call your employer and tell them that a storm knocked out the power if that is the case, and that you will get back to work once the power comes back on. Also as an employee there is still no guarantee you will have work. Good luck in your quest.
I did when I worked for a small MTSO sm
and boy, did I live to regret it!  She was, let's just say, um PSYCHO!  In a nutshell, my nephew died and she didn't believe me when I asked for a few days off...she had to see the announcement in the paper first! Needless to say, I dumped her shortly after that incident.  There were many, many more, but this was the final straw!
I have worked for a small MTSO once and

was never afraid of not getting paid. Something in her voice told me I could trust her and just dove in. No contract, either. But I did have to give her my SSN for the 1099.


Never realized I would be setting myself up for trouble but every 2 weeks the check came in the mail.


Ask the MTSO. That's all you can do.

I worked for a small MTSO who gave the client
the client changed to smaller and smaller font sizes, the MTSO let them know the rate would change so the MTSO never lost money just because of the font size. The clients always understood. The client simply wanted less bulk in their charts, not to short change the MTSO.
If I worked an 8 hour day I could make that much
money.   I only work about 5 hours day and make good money, but I have a good platform, paid for gross lines, fairly easy to get lines, etc.   I am an employee too.

Had the same epiphany. End result? I have worked 72 the past 2 weeks (not quite 80, not till tomorrow). How much money have I made? $2000 at 8.5 cpl SO FAR, I have to work tomorrow.
I made $17 an hour when I worked there. I also was promised a raise
but never saw it nor did I get an answer from mgmt when I asked.  I quit.  Most editors I know make between $15-$18 with MQ
i think anywhere from 14 to 20 an hour depending on hours worked, kind of work, etc.

Excuse me but federal taxes are paid as employee by employee
The ONLY difference in IC is you pay the ENTIRE amount of the SS which is the 15.25%, as an employee you only pay 7.75%.  And you can easily make up that difference in deductions.  As an employee you just have someone else manage your withholdings and as an IC you do it yourself.  I have much more usable income being an IC and not an employee and I am strict about putting aside what I need to.  But everyone always says you have to pay your own taxes, well your employer does not PAY them for you -- except 7.75% of SS, they merely withhold it for you.  As an IC you are the employer.

if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.
I start an hour or 2 early and then take an hour or 2 for dinner -nm

Did you mean 2,000? Even then you would only be making $1.50 if you work 8 hours a day.

You an IC, statutory employee or employee?
That designation, and/or forcing the IRS to designate you, can make a diff. Are you a corporation? Partnership? You need WAY more help than we can give you.
If you are employee, unless suit against your employee
otherwise the posts on here as far as I can see telling it like it is. I think a lot of the posts are so young they just don’t have a clue as to what it means to be an employee. You do as your employee wants (I am talking reason now, not stupidity as far as sexual advances, etc) or else you find another company that fits your personality better. You do not confront, you do not tell your employee no, that is their job, not yours. This is such a simple thing for people who have been in the work force for any period of time.
I got up early, worked during naps, and worked when DH got home.

You have to be disciplined to make yourself work when baby is napping instead of maybe watching TV or doing housework, etc.   


I might also go the route of having a teen come into your home, or either trying a mother's morning out program at a local church/daycare.   I've been home since my youngest was born and he has never been in all-day daycare, but I did have him in a mother's morning out program 15 hours a week at a local church.   It didn't help a lot with my work schedule because I had an older son in school and was a room mom and tutored other kids, but that might be an option.  The only problem with the mother's morning out program is they are around other kids and tend to pick up every germ.  I finally took my DS out of the program because he stayed sick.  You were supposed to keep them off if they had green nasal discharge and I did, but no one else did.  Every time I got him well after 2 to 3 days back he would be sick again.  Other than that it was very good for him because he would not have had a chance to be around kids his age otherwise.

I worked on that system when I worked there...
The thing that chapped my hide about that TWS was that they designed it so that all the headers of each section of the report were canned and thus you were not paid for them, even though you had to take your hand off the keyboard and mouse down a list of paragraph headers to chose the one you needed.  Just racking up more profits for themselves.  Ticks me off.

why are we just hearing this now? I know voice recog has been around, but this is entirely different. This will also make coding and billing obsolete.

Don't know why, but it just bothers me that one of our 'own' is the one pushing this...and she is also connected with AAMT. Do they support this, and if so, what is their advice I wonder to the MT?

Perhaps that is one question for their website (I do not subscribe to their mag or credentials...)

Yes, you should get a small
social worker, psychologist, or whatever. You just have to wade in and start swimming. If you find the right account, that should help you start out.

Okay, I have tried the big nationals and that did not work out for me.  I would like something for a few hours a day - would love to do family practice SOAP notes again or something where I can just type away and make some decent money.  I promise a fast turn-a-round and I am willing to work hard, but no complicated platforms and no set hours.  
Why not sue in small claims (sm)
You have a business contract with them. It's not a paycheck we are talking about. It's payment for services rendered. Are they going to send someone to your state to defend it? Probably not!

added to the house but it's on the same property as the house...I can't really describe what it looks like. I have only seen it a couple of times. Not sure if that would work. my office is a small
table between the kitchen and the dining room. Books are in a closet right next to it. It helps so I can keep an eye on what my toddler is doing.

Yes, small services (sm)

used to pay 11 cpl IC, have now sold out to squids who in turn pay 7-8 cpl.


And services left average 8 cpl, if you're really experienced you'll get 10 or 11 and get such bad dictation you'll get a headache you'll never forget.

As I was heading toward the exit door, she asked me to send her every single one of the normals I used.

So, I sent her the exact ones she had sent me in the beginning, before I refined them to a fine tune, which had taken me hours and hours to do. I'm telling you, I had most tests for every doctor where I could just hop around and fill in the blanks. No way was I giving those hours of work away!

There's a great online resource for MTSOs of all sizes, varying benefits and pay, and variety of work.  It's called www.MTJobs.com.  Sign up to be on their mailing list.  There are usually at least 50 companies listed on each newsletter, which comes out twice a month.  Good luck in your search, and prayers for God's healing of your medical problems.  :)

an individual. We are trying to put some new things in place and want to make sure that we put the right things in place.

I guess just not the huge places like Medquist. I would like a little bit smaller. I am even interested in any companies that are great to work for and pay okay. I am not having that great of luck working for MTSO and getting paid good.

Small ear pieces
Try Lanier Healthcare.  They have a headset that has ear pieces that fit right into your ear without any hard plastic to deal with, just wires and the foam that fits into your ears.  They are the best ones I have ever used. 
Believe me, you are neither weak or small.
You are a very strong lady who simply wants the best for her family (including an abusive husband). You are the only one who can make the choice to stay or leave and it has to be your choice entirely. We can all give advice all day long, but the ultimate decision will be yours. We are here to listen, though, and to pray in your behalf for wisdom to make the right choice. Whatever you decide, don't ever forget that when it seems like you're all alone, God is always with you, leading and guiding.  
As an IC, you are your own small business. As a

contractor you have NOT been in their emloyment.  You have worked as contract labor for them, whether it be 1 month, 1 year or 5 years.  They owe you absolutely nothing at any point in time of the contract.  However, should you contact their clients (as you mentioned below), there can be legal repercussions for you so I would seriously think twice about this before going forward.


As an IC, it seems you would know that you should not put all of your eggs in one basket. I would bet that most of us that are IC's work for at least 2 companies.  For the ones that don't, they probably work for 1 company and have their own accounts, OR better yet have all their own accounts.


TAT is of the utmost importance.  It only takes twice with me and I won't send anymore work to that particular IC anymore, which is my option.  I might give them a second chance IF their work was top notch.
