Laptops and foot pedals

I just discovered that the foot pedal I use with Bayscribe does not fit into my laptop! The foot pedal has a 9-pin connection and the laptop has mostly only USB portals. I don't want to buy a new foot pedal. Is there any sort of adapters or some other way to make this work?

laptops and foot pedals
Hi.  could you explain a little further how the hot keys works versus foot pedal?  thanks for helping me out.  I feel so out of it with some of this.
Where do you buy foot pedals for your transcription. Who has the best foot pedals for sale.
:
Foot pedals
When I was a C-phone user, I had to buy a couple replacements. It was too costly to have a repairperson repair them, and instead it was best to throw it out and buy a new one. It used to be we could open them up and clean the CONTACTS.

If the footpedal setup wizard doesn't work it may be that your 9 pin port card has been setup to do other things (maybe games?). You need to get the driver for the card (perhaps the driver CD is lying around somewhere) or get a nerd to update the card's driver. Port settings can also be a problem. Sometimes it's just easier to switch to a USB footpedal!

You could also try Port 1, 2 etc in the settings, running through the wizard each time and see if that helps on one or the other of them. Another possibility is mechancal, the cable/socket may be damaged.

FOOT PEDALS

I need help quickly.  Someone gave me a foot pedal with a serial adapter.  However, there is no serial port on my new computer.  Is there any way I would be able to use this foot pedal with my new computer?  Thanks in advance for your help.

foot pedals
I had a 15-pin serial port (game port) foot pedal and when I got a new sound xcard, it no longer had the game port on it, so I was stuxck. I tried the adapter route, but it does not work bexcause of the wiring for the fast forward etxc in the pedal. I ended up having to buy a USB pedal. Alot of newer *puters don't have game ports anymore. good luk.
foot pedals
I would like to thank everyone who offered their advice. I will let you all know how the adapter works out once I get it. Again, thank you.
2 foot pedals
Yes you can; I've used as many as 3 pedals at one time, as long as you have enough ports to plug them into.
Foot Pedals
Any idea why the MT companies are asking that you buy their foot pedal?  I have several foot pedals I purchased from employers, and no one wants to use the one I already have.  Each new job wants you to buy their foot pedal.  I see an ad with MedScribe who is requiring the same thing.
Foot pedals

I am going to have to be purchasing my own foot pedal soon, and I was wondering if there are some that are better than others, etc. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone know if a dictaphone USB foot pedal can be configured for Emdat Inscribe?
Foot pedals
I have a question about foot pedals. Up until now, I have always transcribed from tapes, and I loved the foot pedals on the transcribers because they were easy to use.  I am now transcribing with a 9-pin foot pedal, and I find it very dificult to use because it appears to be tight.  I feel as if I have to stomp on it to make it play, rewind, etc.  Any suggestions on foot pedals?
foot pedals
If I have no foot pedal and don't know what company I will work for, what would you buy.  I just won't test without one, and one has always been furnished to me by the other companies I work for.  Any advise on this, and any recommendations on what is the best company for part-timers.  I have been around a while, and too old to do full-time, but have the knowledge in acute care, etc.  Lots of experience.
Most foot pedals will work with just about
any software program, though some are proprietary and will only work with one program.   What software program did you utilize previously?  Do you still have the software on your computer, there could be a conflict between the 2.
Can you use 2 foot pedals on 1 computer? sm
I use a USB currently and am thinking about applying for a part-time job that uses a 9-pin.  Thanks
Software for foot pedals? sm

If I would purchase an Infinity foot pedal, would I be able to use it with any software, such as Expresscribe or my MP3 player? Or does it come with some type of software.

Still afraid to purchase a foot pedal as I bought one last year and it just sits here because I can't get it to work.  Tried it with Expresscribe and get a message that the connection is not recognized (USB port).

Thanks

I use a USB and INDb9 foot pedals
I plug my headphones into my computer tower, but my friend who uses the USB port for her foot pedal only plugs hers into her speakers, so I don't think you will have any problems. :)
Laptop and foot pedals?

OK, DH ordered a laptop for me as a surprise.  For our current situation it will work best because we have a very small house (800 sq feet) and right now my dining room table has become my office/desk.  With the laptop we can use a smaller/compact computer desk in the corner of the living room and move the big computer back to the basement office.  (That office doesn't work for me on a daily basis cause there is not enough room for our 2 year old and 4 month old to play)

It is an Acer, not sure of the model as I haven't seen it and didn't order it.  Our computer guy is switching it from Vista to windows and will have it set so I can switch to Vista when/if Escription is compatible. Anyway, my concern now is with the foot pedal.  I type on Escription so have the 9-pin pedal.  How do I get that to work with the laptop?  Do I need to have a 9-pin port put into the laptop?

winscribe foot pedals used are
I found this on their website. Hope this helps you.

The WinScribe digital dictation system is a software only platform meaning you can choose the type of hardware that you use and are not limited to a specific model or brand. We work closely with key manufacturers including Olympus, Philips, Grundig Business Systems and VEC Electronics.

The WinScribe digital transcription application is a PC interface that offers an easy to use graphical user interface. You can control dictation playback using a standard foot pedal adapted to connect to the games port on a sound blaster or compatible sound card or a supported USB foot pedal. Any suitable headset may be used.

Wireless foot pedals?
Does anyone know if there is any such thing as a wireless foot pedal?  I do a lot of transcribing on the weekend in the car (not driving of course!) and it would be nice to eliminate one more wire.  Not a big deal, but if there is one I may have to put it on my Christmas wish list! :)
I only know that the Olympus foot pedals
does not work with eScription/editscript. But this was some time ago and they told me that they will work on it. Maybe now it does.
If I were you, I would try to get into contact with your doctor's software provider.
Olympus is one of the most expensive foot pedals, I have one myself and I could not use it.
You have to remember, not all foot pedals
x
AND - most foot pedals need software to work. $$$

Use your mouse and keep going back as another poster said.  It is time consuming, but you'll be surprised at finding that something you thought you didn't understand will become crystal clear after listening to it over and over.  :)

When I tested, I kept having to going back and back and then I suddenly realized that the word I could not figure out, "Whameetig" was the word "vomiting."

Good luck!!!

Infinity makes probably 95% of the foot pedals
used, even if sold under a different name.   I don't know if there is one made to be compatible with what you have, but you could Google foot pedals for your particular model.
As long as you have USB foot pedals and keyboards, then your set.

I travel, but due to having to have a special foot pedal (the 9-pin and no new computers come with them anymore). I purchased a computer through Dell that was about the size of a bible. Then, I bought a small flat panel monitor to go with it. I just bubble wrap them and put them into a special suitcase that I put all of my work equipment in etc.. I have even taken it over to Hawaii. Nothing better than sitting out on the lanai watching the sunset while your working..

I do hope to change jobs to one which allows a USB foot pedal so I just bought a new laptop. Now, to get the job, and I'm halfway there..

Must program it as 3 foot pedals to work..sm

When you program the foot pedal, you need to program it as 3 foot pedals..one for back, one for play and one for forward.

open express scribe

go to settings

pedal drop down and choose 3

Infinity makes the majority of the foot pedals, though
some are configured to work only with proprietary programs, so even though it is Infinity brand doesn't mean it will work with your player program.  I have an Infinity pedal that only works with one player program.
Infinity makes the majority of the foot pedals, though

they may be sold through many different companies and under different names.   The pedal you get depends on the software you will be using it with.   The USB works with most programs; however, there are programs that have proprietary software and the foot pedal has to be specifically configured for it.  The pedal looks the same, it is just the wiring that is different.

If you don't yet have a job that requires a pedal I would wait.  You can test w/o a foot pedal using hot keys.  Some companies will even provide a foot pedal.

Does anyone know about how long the foot pedals might last? Mine is skipping and
getting on my last nerve.
Also regarding foot pedals and antivirus software programs
You can also try to find foot pedals on ebay, there they are much cheaper, I know, everybody knows this.

I think every antivirus software 'works' with any platform.
Why should it make a difference?
I do not think that the companies mean that some antivirus softwares DO NOT WORK with their platforms, they just ask for the safest and believe tht these 2, Norton and McAfee are the safest.

I work with Escription/Editscript and it is strongly recommended by my employer that either Noton or McAfee is downloaded and paid for.

I have McAfee, because, be;ieve it or not, MTSOs see these 2 as sefest.

Now I am expecting to be bashed by certain MTs for my 'rude' comment.
Never mind.
There aren't too many companies who send you foot pedals.. I don't want to align with a compan
.
Do U keep playing with the ports and the types of foot pedals? An odd pedal might not work, like a

Laptops sm
I would appreciate knowing how much memory the laptop needs, as mine is pretty slow. My desktop has more than enough, so could I plug my laptop into the tower of my desktop? Sounds crazy, but I would not have to move the monitor, just the tower case if I'm going to be at another location, that in itself would be so very helpful. Is this possible? Have USB ports available on both. Also (dumb question) do you use a footpedal or function keys?
for those of you using laptops
I've been looking into getting one for my son who's going off to college - which ones do you use and are happy/not happy with?  Thanks!
Laptops

Do any of you work on a laptop and how do you like it?  Which one do you have?  What do you consider the pros and cons?  Thanks

laptops
We bought our son a Toshiba, satellite series laptop 3 years ago and it is a good one, added memory to it also, hope our luck continues with it.
Laptops
A laptop will work FINE with ANY platform including Dictaphone ExText -- I have had mine since 2006 and it is an HP and I run XP Pro on it with Word 2000 -- I also purchased a four hub USB port to plug into my bottom USB port and have four available ports for my other devices -- I also run a Sprint USB card on my laptop and have NO problems whatsoever -- also, for you people that want to know about "wireless" -- if you DONT have a wireless network setup at home be it a laptop or desktop it WILL NOT work!!!! If you have a neighbor that has a wireless network, if it is a private network, you wont be able to access it -- people want the convenience of a laptop and "thinking they can work outside" -- think about battery life etc -- my laptop is plugged in just like a desktop would be and NEVER outside -- also, being outside half the time you cannot see the screen -- wireless keyboard and mouse as well for comfort and footpedal to work with -- think about you "home setup" before buying a laptop cause it may be more headache than it is worth
laptops
I use my laptop and my cell phone as internet connection. I do not use the card slot for the PC but am Bluetooth directly to connection with internet.. I have used my laptop while in the car, hubby driving, of course. It is really great. I use an external keyboard so that does slow me down in the car when i use the keyboard from the laptop but if I need to begin my weekend early I can and travel for the last few hours of my shift
Laptops
Laptops now have just as much memory, hard drive size, and use the same CPUs as desktop or tower computer systems.

Also, the Acer (or other brand) you get from Walmart is identical to the one you'll buy from an electronics store...and you'll pay more.

The only reason I'd go to an electronics store is if I needed something installed on the system, like additional memory or a different operating system than the one that comes "standard" (Vista Home Premium for Acers and many others now) or something like that. And, even if I needed something like that I probably would just order it with whatever "customizations" I needed directly from the company over the Internet.
Advantage of Laptops?

Another poster asked how many MTs use laptops, and that got me wondering what the advantage to a laptop would be.  I understand traveling, but it sounds like some use it for home.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I'm trying to figure out how I can transcribe outside on the back deck with a C-phone and computer (I live in a rural area).  I guess a laptop, extension cords, and moving with the sun would probably be logical, but are there any problems with that scenario that anyone can think of?  Does anyone have any other ideas for outdoor transcription?  I get kind of lonely during the day, so I thought the outdoors might help.  Also, work wants me to transcribe 2 hours before breaking!  Even though I'm new with this company, I haven't met that goal yet.  Thought I would try some new scenery, if it's possible!  ');>

More about laptops, would you share?
What brand do you have?  What specs, actual screen size, hard drive, RAM, ports?  Do you have a parallel port for your foot pedal?  Do you have a docking station?  I'm looking and am curious what everyone else is using.
should not use laptops on laps....sm

Read months ago in news articles that men should not use laptops on their laps due to radiation to their male body parts and affecting sperm counts...

it can be googled for verification

I have 2 laptops, 1 in case something happens to the other, but
99% of the time I have used the same laptop the entire time.  I do work full-time and until recently worked 7 days a week, so it has gotten lots of use.   I've also traveled quite a bit with my laptop so it has taken lots of wear and tear.
laptops are no different than desktops.

You most likely won't have a serial port or game port connection on a laptop unless you have it customized, but there will be several USB ports and most everything these days comes with USB connections.  There will be a place for headphones on any computer.  As far as the rest of the stuff it is the same and you would look for the same things as if you were buying a desktop.  I was told recently though that the Sony Viao run hot and that they weren't really made for a mobile type situation.

If you want to travel you have to know all your internet options because you'll find yourself in various situations and your primary option may not be available for some reason, so you always have to have a backup plan.

Opinion on laptops.....sm

Would anybody mind telling me which type of laptop pc they prefer....Toshiba  vs. HP, type of processor etc. that they prefer  ex.AMD, core duo etc.  Considering getting myself one but there are so many out there with so many different specs it is getting quite confusing.  You are welcome to e-mail if you wish.  I would appreicate any input that I can get to help sort it all out.

Thank you so much......

speaking of laptops
how do you sit outside when you need a foot pedal??  laptop knowledge is  sort of new to me also.  Thanks!!
Looking at Dell laptops, need help plz..sm

I am going to purchase my first laptop with Dell but have no clue which one to get.  I will be working from home with it so I am not too concerned with wireless internet connection and all that.  Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

I use laptops exclusively...sm
I have used a laptop exclusively for years and years and have never had a problem with the screen. I currently have an HP with a 17" screen and keep it constantly during the week. It is about a year old and is just fine. My old one that is for personal use is still going strong after 3-1/2 years.

Any advice on laptops? sm

I'm searching for a laptop to use occasionally.  I have a Dell desktop, but have heard some bad things about their laptops.  A friend did tell me that Acer has a good reputation for their laptops.

Any/all advice appreciated.
