An IC is just that, an independent contractor.  Unless your contract states that you have to type at a specific time, don't you do your work when you want to?  I would just not take any more work that I could get done in that specific time frame (if the work is done digitally) or stop at the time you need to leave for your appointment and go back to work when you get back home.  Most physicians don't guarantee a specific amount of work per day, and most ICs just guarantee a Turn Around Time - usually 24 hours.  If you rarely have a STAT report then I wouldn't worry about it.  If you have STATS every day, then in this case I might consider notifying them, particularly if they are nice enough to notify you in advance if your physician is going to be done.  It would only be common courtesy on your part to let them know you will be out for that time.  Otherwise, if they don't notify you and you don't usually have STAT reports, then I wouldn't.
