i would let them know also

I think the professional thing to do would be to let them know...I am an IC and do let my doctor's office know when I will not be available to type...I really don't have to ask or schedule time off...I just email them and let them know when I will be available and when I will not be available, and that works fine with them...I, like you, am my own boss, and that is one of the great things about being an IC.
