No, OEM is original equipment manufacturer, so it
would be a legit piece of equipment/software and able to be registered.   Don't know what version of WP, but 5.1 is no longer supported.

I know for a fact, as I even called the manufacturer on the telephone to clarify. I was so annoyed because my QA person just kept changing it to lower case - until now of course when I cleared that up.

so 5 (or #5 as I would type it) is the thickest -- I would use the pound sign to make sure that I was not talking about "five silk sutures" ... I don't know why but my vague recollection is that I "decided" to type 0 without a pound sign, except because size versus number is not applicable.

I have also read that for example 2-0 can also be written 00 and 3-0 as 000 which I think is a hold over from wire gauge measurements.

My current BOS irritant is the "rule" to leave off the 0.0 in for example 98.0 as a temp which is okay but orthopedic screw sets, called 4.0, four-point-oh, seems a bit rule-bound. I can't seem to get an opinion on this ...

Meanwhile... my favorite cure for just about everything, that seems to work more often than not, is to shut everything down, and I do mean everything--turn off the printer, turn off the computer it's attached to, take out the paper and put it back in, maybe even take out the ink cartridge and put it back in, maybe even disconnect the printer (with the power OFF!) and reconnect it; then turn everything back on, in the normal order, and see if that cures the problem. Sometimes when things haven't been powered down in a while, or a computer hasn't been shut down and restarted, things can get confused internally. No, that's not a very technical explanation, but I once had a programmer tell me to shut down and reboot the server at least once a month because if you don't, it "can't find the top of its own desk." (Guess that IS a technical explanation.)

If that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you... try tech support on the manufacturer's website.

As for the original question...
How do they get hired? Well they have someone help them with the test, easy as that. I have also had work from one MT come across my desk and you can tell that more than ONE MT did the work. Sadly, on some of them, whomever is helping is no better.

My heart goes out to you.  The sexual harrassment i'm going through is not comparable, I couldn't imagine dealing with this if I were a child..  In a way, they are taking something from us, no matter what age, when they cross that border.  I have told someone, so its out.  But my mother is another story. She has been abused emotionally and physically by men.  Like I said above, she is in a horrible state of mind, depends soley on this man.  Thats why removing myself until I figure things out would be best.  I do notice on his side of the family, he is not near his grandchildren, or great grandchildren, and over they years, they have expressed their hate for him.  I just don't understand at his age how he could still be doing something like this and not learn from it, having lost his own family? He is a master at getting people to like him...my family would raise eyebrows at me if I brought this up.  But like I said, I told someone, she understands, and it has leaked around. Actually talking to my mother, she would do something to hurt herself.  She wouldnt be able to handle it.

but if you think you need to have a hysterectomy, find a physician who can do it laparoscopically. I had that done in December 2003 and I was back on my feet within a week. I didn't go back to work (outside the home at that time) for three weeks, but I had to convince the doctor to give me that much time because he knew how fast the recovery was from a laparoscopic hyst.

You said "She was voted off because she sang a Christian song."  That is absolutely not true.  She was voted off because this week when she sang country she did not get enough votes.  If you want to get really technical with it, "She was voted off because she sang a country song." 


This had absolutely nothing to do with religion.  The week that she sang a christian song she did not get anywhere near being in the bottom three.  She was in a singing competition in which she would get a record deal if she won.  I don't think God would mind if she sang a song "out of her element" in this competition.  She did not commit any sin.  You sing what you have to, to get through the competition, if you win you chose whatever genre of music you want to pursue for a record deal.  Ruben did.  He sang all types of music during the competition and won it, then he made a religious album.


Don't come blasting on something you know nothing about.  You said you weren't an Idol fan, so why do you even care and why did you have to make it out to be something it wasn't?


By the way, I am a Christian.  I just hate it when people try to put religion in everything and twist things to make them look evil!!!!

We do things for our kids like take them to occasional movies, day trips, buy them a clothing item etc in addition to spend a minimum of 1 hour quality time a day per child with them. Hugs & kisses are handed out and we tell them each day that we love them. So, while they have to do chores and work on being self-sufficient they also know they're very much loved and we want them to do well in life.

I did not read your original post - but you definitely hit the nail on the head as far as MTs go. Most that I have dealt with on these boards, as well as those I have worked with are either alcoholics, drug addicts, have numerous personal/personality disorders and problems and most are just downright crazy - I think that is the first thing that you have to be in order to go into this business. They do not work well with others and are constantly trying to sabotage their co-workers - even if they work at home. Stealing and lying are not beneath most that I have dealt with. I considered myself quite a normal person until I got into this field and now anyone will tell you that I am not that person any longer. I think that listening to the depressing reports about illness, surgery and death takes its toll on you after a few years and is somehow ingrained into your psyche. I don't know if it could be called an MT phenomenon or what - but MTs are definitely a breed of their own. For any child that gets a check mark for doesn't get along well with others - they should be directed to this field for their life's work. please take this with a grain of salt - I have not had my afternoon medications yet.

I'm a homeschooling mom as well. Rock on! It can be hard to figure out how to balance it all.

I believe you really need a network to do the best job homeschooling. My niece homeschools her three children. All the work is assigned, taught and done at home. But she has access to the community band and symphony, community sports, and a large homeschool network that plans wonderful field trips and educational outings. So they have everything a public school has, except the knives, guns and drugs (this is California). Just shutting kids in a house and teaching them lessons is not a complete education, in my opinion, and I believe that many successful homeschooling parents do an excellent job of "socializing" their children. Since my son was an only child, it is something we put off for several years until we had no choice. Fortunately he was able to start as a freshman in high school this year and his health has been fine. Homeschooling is something that needs to be considered carefully from all angles.

That said, homeschoolers are also becoming not only accepted, but sought after by colleges and employers for their excellent work ethic, and an education you rarely get in public school, where all the work has to be geared to a lower level so no one is "left behind." If we had several children, I would have seriously considered it, since we are not close enough to a private school to make that practical. My son is so bored in public school, it is disheartening, especially since he is in a "slow" class.

a company did to me. we supposedly got paid for spaces. we were "required" to put two spaces after a period, etc. I kept struggling to get my line counts up to par thinking why is it taking me so long to reach my norm. finally one day i decided to compare line counts. what i came up with was higher than theirs. so i figured line count without spaces and was too low. i took the difference of with spaces and without spaces and divided spaces in half and bam, hit their line count exactly. so even they we were required to type two spaces after periods, etc., we only got paid for one. their system would take our spaces and divide those in half before giving us the line counts. i never typed another document for them after i figured this out and didn't even waste my time explaining why. i felt i had the right to do as i choose since i was flat out lied to. nothing is worse than dishonesty. no that company was not Transtech for those wondering. to me, the #1 priority is honesty, decent program, then good communication, decent pay, pay on time and as agreed upon, decent work and steady workload.
I should add something to my original post...
Being on unpaid leave is not really an issue for me, as we will have enough in savings for me to be off for a while. Also, I will not have to worry about finding someone to replace me while I am gone. I just wanted to know if the normal time was 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, etc. Thanks!

No, I did not complain that I was being asked to do work I was told I wouldn't have. I responded to a person who stated they did. My response was that many MTs are no longer being matched up with the work they are most proficient at, then clueless companies act surprised when it slows down efficiency or loses employees. That is fact I have observed, of late over and over again. Please go back and read the thread.

I won't even go into being "thankful" that a person is in a two-way contract that should benefit both parties, the employer and the employee, and honor about keeping to the agreement made.

Regardless, I'm done with this mad hatter's tea party conversation.

You make me laugh, stating that I am trying to intimidate you? By the way, those "switches" you keep referring to reside in the boxes at each zone.

Also, I DID live in a rural area when this whole situation came up for me and we could NOT get DSL until we had fiberoptic AND the equipment in the box was changed. As far as speed goes, when we lived in the RURAL area, AFTER the FO and equipment installation, we could get 6.0...the highest speed available. I live in town now, not even a mild from the "central office" and can only get 3.0. Distance is not as much of a factor as you think....fiberoptic and equipment in the box is the main factor.

As my mom always told me, book learning isn't always as good as good old-fashioned WORK experience. Have you worked out in the field, installing, laying fiber, actually DOING what you seem to have learned so much from being lectured by engineers? If I remember right, most of these engineers sit in an office and direct traffic, never actually driving anything.

Since I am probably talking to someone who will NEVER change their mind even when presented with factual arguments, I'm truly going to stop now. You can have the run of the board back and see how many more people you can call names and intimate that no one understands anything besides you. LOL :-)

For everyone else reading this, I truly only intended to help when I first posted and I truly know from first-hand experience what I'm talking about, not just because my husband did this exact job for so long, but because I read, I research, and I observe. Good luck to all of you and maybe this stimulus money that is supposed to go for "taking broadband to the suburban and rural areas" will be well spent.

Again, things got taken out of context here -- the not working weekends so on and so forth. All I was trying to imply here is that nowadays, you need to be flexible in any job. If you are scheduled to work on a holiday, then put in 3-4 hours earlier or later in the day and you have the sime to spend with your family.

My S/O has a very crazy schedule where he is off on Mondays and Tuesdays, so I generally take Tuesday as my "day off" because I have bills to pay and can't really afford to take more days off than that.

As far as my comment about doing stat reports was concerned, that too, was taken out of context. With my company, we all have assigned days for doing stat reports -- mine happens to be Wednesday afternoons and I was working on Saturday anyway and was just surprised when I was called and asked to do these and not the person who normally does them.

It saddens me to see the way this profession has "gone down the tubes" -- I got into this field and am still in this field, because I feel in some small way, I contribute to my fellow human beings and their health and well being.

A lot of this yes, has to do with companies and them becoming what they have -- MQ being in my opinion, the "biggest monster of them all." But, on the other hand too, so many MTs tend to "saturate" other companies based on positive posts, which thereby at times will create a shortage of work, as well as the fact that they tend to skip over the difficult dictators -- here again, as it was previously mentioned, it is a learning process and should be treated as such.

In NO way was I stating that you should put your job over your family -- what I was trying to state in my original post is that you have to learn to be flexible -- if you refuse to bend and try to put a good balance between family life and your job, then you more than likely will find yourself at some point without a job.

My doc wanted to go digital so I had him purchase the equipment. If you purchase you are responsible for repairs and such.
IC DO pay for their own equipment, etc.
Poster doesn't say what the situation is but you're wrong to state that you don't pay for your tools to do work--I'm an IC and it's my responsibility to have what I need to do the work.

I have such mixed feelings about this (EMR).  On one hand, I think the technology is awesome, and I think it makes so much of sense to have our medical info. available electronically (pretty much immediately) instead of a doctor having to request a hard copy and wait for it to be mailed or whatever (like when you change PCP doctors or go to a specialist or whatever). 


On the other hand, is every doctor going to be running around with one of these handheld devices in his/her pocket, with all this medical info. on people?  What if they lose it?  How secure and accurate is the info. really?  And of course I won't even go into the effect EMR will have on our jobs as MTs. 


BTW, I saw this "MD Tablet" thing in the background when I was watching a story on Nightline.  The story was about how the super rich in America are pretty much oblivious to the state of the economy, and still carry on with their usual lifestyle, spending money lavishly.  No cutbacks for them to worry about.  The one rich guy they were showing is involved in this MD Tablet product. Ever feel like, as MTs, we are sooo on the wrong side of things?  LOL

Not because they know more, they HEAR it better. But not all of them.
The core problem in this profession are crappy dictations and not maintaining their equipment by doctors.

Regarding better equipment
Even without better equipment, often when they start listening to your blanks they will be plain as day.

If I have a blank toward the beginning of my report and go back to listen after finishing the report, I will many times understand it as well. There is something about hearing it out of context that makes it understandable.

This isn't always the case, (obviously sometimes it's just plain not understandable), but it happens more than you think.
