Question for ICs

For those of you who are independent contractors, can you answer a question for me?

I currently work for a small, local company and they have assigned me a few clinics that I transcribe for on my own.  However, I am considering finding my OWN clinics and 'cutting out the middle man,' so they say.  I've been doing tons of research, but the only thing that I can't find an answer to is what to do about vacations.

With my current company, they have about 150 subcontractors.  So in this situation, if I need to take a vacation, then I can just have a few of the other ICs fill in for me.  But what do I do if it is JUST ME???

That's the only reserve that I have about jumping in and doing it on my own.  Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
