Question regarding OS XP Pro - sm

I bought a computer from Dell about 5 years ago with XP Pro as the OS. Now I need to purchase a laptop and I am wondering if I purchased a laptop without an OS at all, can I load the XP Pro onto the laptop and use that as my OS????? I am so wary about Vista and just wanted to know if anyone has done this. TIA!!!
