Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

Read this and you will change your mind

Pay scale looks pretty low to me, according to the owner who emailed employees with this: "Whether we think offshore labor is right or wrong, it has become a fact we cannot escape from. OSi will not actively pursue offshore labor contracts, but we have made the decision to experiment with using some offshore labor to save this large OSi client from going elsewhere. We believe this is the best decision for our employees assigned to this account and the company because this account is growing and we can assign the offshore part to the future increases and not have to reassign any OSi MTs. OSi is committed to continue using US MTs for the majority of their work and we will continue to resist going offshore."

If you want to work for a company with incompetent and unqualified management on power trips GO FOR IT.

YOU need to change your mind
You have deep issues that control the way you act and behave in the world. You are programmed to please and do GREAT, because that is just what you perceived to be the best path for you growing up. If I achieve, achieve, and do great, then I will be safe. Well guess what, you forgot to look at yourself and praise yourself and acknowledge it YOURSELF. Go back, find your SELF in there and say, what does ___ want? Stop the achieving and look at your soul. As you can see, blind achievements, however great, do not feed your soul. That is what is happening anyway, you have shut down and stopped. It is all happening unconsciously, though. Your self is trying to save yourself: pay attention. So, be conscious, ask, listen. Do not drink. That will only take you further away from YOU. YOU is what you are looking for. Meanwhile, count the blessing of your apartment. This is a safe cocoon for you to do your heart's work. Also, realize that you are one smart fellow, so all that work wasn't for nothing. The trick now is to find your heart and connect it to that.
Dictators who change their mind
About 4 months ago I switched to a new account. The account is great in the fact that there are almost no ESL doctors. However, there are about 4-5 female dictators who have great difficulty in transcribing a report. They sit and think about what they are going to say for time periods of 30 seconds and above. They either speak incredibly slow or very fast. They also change their mind A LOT. They can change their mind multiple times in one sentence or change their mind and make me go back several paragraphs to fix something. One dictator says "okay, okay, okay" after each sentence as she searchs her files for the next thing she wants to say.

These dictators hurt my line count so much that I am putting in extra time to meet my line count. They can drag my usual hourly average of 180-200 down to 140-160 lines an hour. I have complained about them multiple times and my supervisor says that the company does pass on the complaints. The dictators do not change. I have tried speeding up the dictation on the slow dictators but this usually ends up distorting the sound or rewinding too much or too little and then I spend more time trying to get back to where I was!

I was wondering what others do in situations like this. I sure could use some help trying to make them go by faster so I don't spent my personal hours working on their dictations.
OMG! Don't just change your mind immediately because of a few negative women!
Your first instincts were CORRECT - stay home with your baby! Your baby needs YOU - not some total stranger raising him for the majority of its life.  PLEASE don't listen to the negativity. This board is the worst place for that, really.  Go to any other MT board and you'll get tons of encouraging words.  It makes NO sense that your baby would be better off without you. Think about your words. You have to know in your heart that that's not true. I learned the business and taught myself (horrors on this board as well) when my first child was born, and was transcribing by the time she was 6 months old, again, many days holding her on my lap for a half hour or so. But they take NAPS all the time, especially that young.  You work out an easy schedule around the baby, and it DOES work, if you want it to work. Please feel free to email me and I'll answer any questions you may have, or just talk further about all this.  The MTs on this board are very hostile - even to anyone new who wants to be an MT.  It makes no sense at all - as I thought the purpose of this board was to be mentors for MTs entering the field.  But its not that at all.  The majority hate new MTs, hate newbie students - oh, they really freak about that - like this job is capable of only being done by THEM, and forget kids - NOT a favorite topic.  Very sad, and very shallow.  Since time began, the WHOLE BASIS of MTing at home was to be with the kids. Period. How on earth a mother could work home and then ship her kids off to daycare is so beyond me that I can't even begin to figure it out.  But, that's the sad majority of our screwed up society today - have kids, and then immediately ship them off at 6 weeks old, to be raised by daycare and then the public school system.  Parents and kids pass like ships in the night, but who cares, right?    At least Mom gets to stay comfy at home.
Why not neurter? Google anal adenomas on male dogs and you might change your mind. Neutering
:+
OMG, you read my mind!
so, any ideas? I need some new lunch ideas. Tired of sandwiches, chips, etc.
You must have read my mind.
That's what I told my husband.  Does she think we live with magical transcription critters that come out while we sleep?  Funny, huh?
CSI comes to mind when I read that!
I'd think you'd need some sort of fancy-pants DSP (digital signal processing) program or something that could identify and isolate a particular sound...very cool and very specialized stuff.
You read my mind! That is exactly
what I'm talking about. It's not like previous mammogram films were located to be compared after the exam was typed or anything. "oh ah, go back to that sentence and revise to read." "This is the second correction to..." blah blah blah. Gets old after awhile
"If You Read My Mind"
as sung by Maureen McGovern.
Never mind. Just read your post further down.
Glad to know they gotta go.
LOL, you read my mind. Just the company I was thinking of, too.

:O

You obviously didn't read the post carefully. Try again in a more sober frame of mind.
It made sense to me.
Even 4.5 is too low. doctors do not change - they still hem and haw, change, change stuff along wit
It is just not enough for the work. Speech is great on the wrists but you are not just reading what is typed, you are making a lot of changes. I have a hard time doubling a lot of days with all the changes I have to make. Just my opinion.
Don't change. I had to change back to cable. SuddenLink DSL stinks! nm

Your mind was in the gutter up there with sauteed stool, too. Would you please take your mind out of

Change provider vs change to business plan

In your place, I would seriously consider changing providers if there were others available in your area, but I'd ask around about their service quality first.  It may not be any better.  If there are no other providers, then consider changing your service package to a business account rather than residential.  They're usually more expensive, but they also tend to get faster service if there's a problem.

Last summer, I had no electricity for 3 days due to severe storms, but there were some 600,000 in the same boat with me.  We just had to wait it out.  It's a downside of working at home.

change attitude, change life
The first thing you need to change is that defeatist attitude! I know that's hard at times like this, but that's when you need to most.
I won't go into detail, but my financial situation is also at an all-time low, we couldn't even exchange gifts., daughter in hospital twice, & no med insurance)..but then I heard about how much worse things were for others around me this season. Now I'm thankful instead!
Get out while you can. Things will *never* change unless you change them. (nt)

In 12 years of MT'ing I've never re-read an entire chart. Edit/read as I type. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

****

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

Oh I've read that site and continue to read it...sm
I agree...much motivation there. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past and did successfully quit when I was pregnant for the first time many years ago but I have never managed to summon up the strength or resolve to stay quit. Thus the "need" for a financial investment in my efforts. It somehow makes it more motivational to know that I have $$$ invested in this effort over and above the $$$ saved on cigarettes.
Who had time to read?LOL I only get a chance to read This Old House once in a while. (nm)

I didn't read the other posts but just read this
My daughter got pregnant at 17, said she wanted an abortion but BF didn't. I have a wonderful 2-1/2 yo grand daughter that I don't think I could live without...and now, guess what? I don't. I have custody of her. She was dropped off on my door, I got court ordered temporary custody and final custody hearing in a month.

I'm single with no family support. I had just taken a new MT job one month before this happened and they have been wonderful during my adjusting to being a mom again and I hope I can resume a normal schedule by next week.

I'm passing no moral judgments or giving moral advice. The situation is what it is. My prayers are with everyone involved.
Definitely an eye-opening read. Having my teens read it, too. nm

Would you mind ...
sharing that site with me? You can email me personally at kathy.eberle@gmail.com. I did get that very email and would like to know what everyone else has to say! Thanks!

Kathy
LOL! Never mind - I see it now.
I was sure it wasn't there a minute ago!
Keep in mind, please......
That if a company has more than, say, 10 accounts, that the recruiters just might not KNOW how difficult an account is. When you get a requisition for account #67, there's no telling whether it's the best account on the planet, or the worst.
Don't mind
Actually don't mind the lower income right then, because I am selling my house and can afford to lose a little, knowing that after the first of the year or so I can get my line count back up.
keep in mind
In addition to the good comments made above you must also be aware that if you are going to a program that may upgrade occasionally and is not static you may well run the risk of losing your autotext entries.  If you are really good about backing up your files, good for you and no problems really, but if you are like the rest of us and forget more than you remember to back up .. you could have one horrible day when you see the file not convert or some such ugly thing!

Please keep in mind
how good you are feeling since beginning the drug, and that all drugs are very individual in how they event anyone.  You really should not make a decision for yourself regarding some one's experience.
Never mind...duh

Do you mind me asking...
what company do you work for and are they hiring? I have been an Editor for 15 years and am having a hard time find a good company to work for. Thanks
Please keep in mind that many
of the people on this site work at home. Some have forgotten (some never knew) how to interact with others in a courteous and professional manner.
Please keep in mind (sm)
that he will tell you anything you will want to hear. One thing I had to ask myself when I was going thru this was, is this someone that I would want my daughter married to? I repeated that question to myself any time I was tempted to "try again."
where at and of what...if you don't mind my asking...TIA (NM)

I have! You can do anything you set your mind to!
nm
There are many, but the ones that come to mind first are...
I love him because of the way he loves me. He's not fake, pretentious or condescending. He's funny, talented, and is a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Besides that, he's not afraid to go to the store JUST for a box of tampons ;) ... He's the absolute best and I've never been happier.
I do not mind either
Usually, if I am visiting at my mother's house and need to go online, I will ask but it is not a big deal & vice versa. But it all depends on what they want to use the computer for. When we ask each other to use the computer, it is always just to quickly look something up online & it never involves using that person's computer programs or going into their files or anything like that - just the Internet.
never mind!
was able to recover - Whew!
I don't mind .... sm

If young and older American men and woman love America so much that they are willing to go to a for foreign land to protect my liberties with their lives - I certainly will assume the responsibility of freedom for all by letting the government see who I call.  Frankly, my phone call list is very boring I am afraid.

So to those who want to make a big deal over nothing (as long as you have nothing to hide), remember who is giving up . .  an easier way of making a living (so that you can sit back, fat and sassy) . .  an 8 hour work shift five days a week making far less than us (so you can make the money you feel you deserve and are entitled to). .  being separated from their families (while we are all getting ready to celebrate mother's day with our families) . . .all because of the love for OUR country and THEIR fellow citizens.

STOP - LOOK- LISTEN - Is it your brother, your father, your uncle, your sister, your mother, your aunt, your fiance, your neighbor, your life long friend? - we all are God's precious children.

God Bless to all of our military and to you and your family - Pray for a United America.

I don't mind at all
If they do this and find terrorists in this country and can stop them before they do something else horriffic, I don't mind at all.
I don't mind at all
I think you have misunderstood my post. I was just saying that one MT might make $16,000 per year at 8 cpl and another MT might make double or triple that. Maybe even more. Being an experienced MT I know that it can depend on many factors, that is what I was trying to express. I'm sorry if you misunderstood.

Realistically, I don't think a new MT or even an experienced MT should anticipate $100K per year. So, if you still want my opinion, my guess would be that at 8 cpl, 40 hour week, you would probably make $30,000 to $35,000. Good luck!
I don't mind your asking--sm
as far as I know, they are still together. They got married one month after his financial obligation to me was ended. It took me a while to get over the anger, because I never even saw it coming, but I guess the anger was mostly at me, for letting myself get into that situation in the first place. I had to forgive him for what he did and the way he did it, and I had to forgive myself for being blind in the first place. I prayed alot and God took me through it. I give thanks every day for what He has given me in return. I AM happy though. Thanks for asking.
really do you mind
if I ask how productive you are with it?  Are you editing or transcribing or both?  What is a good hourly average lines per hour?  Thanks!
Oh, OK.....I did not know that, but ... please sm (if you don't mind)

If you are on a regular page in IE, say on this page rigth here, if you hit ctrl F3 do you get the productivity tools?  Maybe I am wrong in what my problem is.  When I try to log into Bayscribe from the log in page I get an error that says "No such Account.BPTVer = [].  My account has been checked by two others who can get it, but I can't.

Thanks again!  It is so nice of you to try to help.  I very much appreciate it.

Paula

You can do it if you put your mind to it.

Check out this link - it shows you some samples!!!  Good luck!  I'm sure you could get the hang of it if you want it bad enough!

Don’t know where my mind was,
know you were talking per mile, not hour. I do not know what the most is he ever made per mile because we have not been married a long, long time but just know am glad he has the job he has, otherwise I would be working my numerous jobs to make a living now with the MTers money steadily declining. I am also glad he did not buy his own truck as 1 coworker tried to get him to. The gas situation went sky high after that and thank goodness he was not involved in that. He loves his job (as do I) and some are just not cut out for that field, same as ours I guess.
Never mind, Sorry, just saw
that you sadi "son" and the person I'm talking about only has a daughter, but the same thing happened to her this morning in a conference call. Must have been the same company. That is very sad
How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? sm
Please don't be alarmed right now. I am anxious to know what they say. I had a breast scare a few weeks ago with indented breasts and nipple changes (no discharge). Everything came back clear and normal. PLEASE keep us informed. Do you ever visit the Gab board on this site? I am there every day. Please post your concern over there and we will support you. Plus, I want to know what the mammo says! Thanks!

Kim
if you don't mind my asking??

what do you average your houly salary to be.  No IC answers please.  I'm talking working 40 hour weeks, no OT, no ASR.  I can only seem to get to about $16/hr and I hear all these people on here talking about $25/hr.  How in the world do you do it? I'm not being nosey, i'm just wondering if i'm at the low end of the totem pole. TIA
