Respectfully disagree island girl

I was merely trying to point out that if one comes to rally the troops on such a topic, they need to know what they talking about.  Quite honestly, this is a huge part of the reason MT is where it is today.  We have our own US MTs who know nothing beyond typing their report and tallying their line count.  Kudos to you for looking beyond and health care management.  Unfortunatley, you may find yourself on the other side of the ball though, so be prepared.  As part of the healthcare management team, you'll be expected to tow the line as far as cost cutting and hospitals are doing it every day.  It's not the MT companies choosing to offshore, but rather the larger hospitals are demanding it to cut costs.  Look around - hospitals are shutting their doors because they're out of money.

I respectfully disagree. m
I frequent a lot of doc's offices as well as the hospital and I can't think of a time when I saw a medical professional wearing scrubs that looked anything less than crisp. I own scrubs but don't personally wear them. I just don't like how they look on me. On the other hand, that's my DH's uniform. He has no choice in the matter. Hospital professionals are required to wear them, and he always looks professional to me. With their specific pockets and such, they serve a purpose that way too. I think the comfort and flexibility serve a great purpose as well since many, many medical professionals work long shifts and if their job is physical at all (moving patients, doing chest compressions, etc.), they need the fleixbility in the fabric too. At least now they have some designs and colors instead of the just the hospital green they used to have.
I have to very respectfully disagree with
Working as an IC inherently gives you the responsibility to cover your account. It comes with perks and it also comes with disadvantages.

One of the disadvantages is that if you don't have someone specifically to cover for you, then you have to catch up after you take time off.

Our family roles are usually the most important in our long list of responsibilities. If the other IC who works with you cannot take on more work, then I see you have 3 options:
1) Find someone else to cover for you so you can maintain your IC position while balancing your family life
2) Quit IC and work as an employee so you do not have to worry about it - just work on your schedule and let the company deal with vacation issues
3) Take your vacation and just prepare yourself to handle the heavy load upon returning.

It may not be what you are intending, nor the others posting here, but it comes across to me as wanting your cake and eat it, too.

You want the advantages of working as an IC but not have any responsibility while you are off. On occasion, you will have an extraordinary situation as one poster listed below where the contract will work with you but not often.

I wish you luck on whatever you decide is best for you.
I have to respectfully disagree.
In the long run, it will not matter how well the outcome of the voice-recognition transcription. MTs will be replaced with editors to handle the VR transcription. It will mean less pay.

They will perfect more and more and, I believe, begin offering VR standards so that dictators with simple dictation can choose canned text just as many do now and no processing is necessary at all. They will just click from a list of normals, click any addendums that are preformatted, electronically sign and authenticate their own work in 1 broad stroke.

Between the cost savings of VR and offshoring, the actual MT work as we know it right now will be a thing of hte past.

Just my opinion, though.

Well, if I may respectfully disagree a little here too
I've been doing this long enough to have started on a typewriter, sooooo mushmouth docs was an issue then.  As a newbie, I asked the same thing - why wouldn't they address this with docs.  I laugh now but I had even suggested they should withhold their pay for x-amount of time, etc (I know naive, how cute and I'm sure that's what the supervisor thought, lol).  AND at that time we had few ESLs.  Then, now and in the future, the hospitals will not come down on the doctors EVER - I mean, geez people they kiss their asses until they're blue in the face.  So now being that most transcription is outsourced, that'll happen when you know what freezes over.  My 2.
I respectfully disagree.
In my experience the trend is away from most people openly professing their religion, since it is becoming more politically incorrect for the average individual in this country. Everyone seems to have a different opinion as to whether or not this is a good thing. At the same time, opinions about different religions have seemed to become more radical. Earlier in my career many of the hospitals around me (the South) had an association with a religious group included as the name of the hospital. At that time the OP would have not even have asked the question as it would not have been an unusual occurence. I still come across the occasional religious reference in dictation, usually when the patient discusses their faith with the physician, not the other way around. It would never occur to me to leave it out, since the physician chose to include it. After all, it is the record of his care of the patient, no matter what I may think about it.
I respectfully disagree.

See my message below.  It all depends on the quality of the account.

I respectfully disagree....sm
Characterizing those of us who look with disfavor on offshore transcription as an "us-versus-them" thing (which amounts to calling us xenophobes) misses the point.

This is not a "koombaya" issue. This is not about being "positive" or "negative" (and, by the way, there are definitely times when being "negative" is precisely the correct attitude to take. I'm very negative about street gangs, for instance.)

This is about the simple facts of the unacceptable risks and problems that are inherent in sending sensitive personal information about American citizens into places where we have little or no control over it. It is also about the poor quality of the transcribed product that we see so consistently, for instance, from an Indian ESL Transcriptionist trying to transcribe a Chinese ESL dictator into proper American English, struggling with American medical slang, etc. I don't think I should have to belabor the point.

I strongly suggest that this organization should indeed be AGAINST something - namely the horrifying practice of sending American dictation offshore and out of our control. That does not mean I don't think it should also stand FOR certain things, such as proper rates of pay for SR editing.

Let's not try to adulterate the whole point of such an organization by suggesting that our main interest should be political correctness, "being positive", or any other such meaningless and self-defeating objectives.
I respectfully disagree. The BEST is CHERRY cake with cherry drizzle. YUMboooooooooooooooyyyy!

Where are you at on the Big Island?
We origially were thinking of moving to the Hilo area, but since my fiance started searching for jobs (he's in construction), he has noticed most of the jobs are in Kailua-Kona. We originally wanted to stay away from the tourist spots (lived in Waikiki before and hated it) and heard Hilo was a more family friendly place. So at the moment we are kind of torn where we want to move. We are going to just live in sublets or temporary housing until we figure out where we want to end up permanently depending on where he gets a job and also where we can still get high-speed internet for mine. Care to share what area you are living in and how you like it?
Well I own my own island right next to Mr. Dicaprio's and as soon as
I have my little jaunt there (with my champagne and caviar), I will be sure to swing by Hawaii and say hello and tootles!! ROFL
Treasure Island
My husband and I were married in Las Vegas last October.  We stayed at Treasure Island in a honeymoon suite for around 140.00 per night.  This price was Sunday thru Wednesday and then the price is higher for Thursday through Saturday.  It was a really, really nice hotel.  Our suite had a hot tub and his and her bathrooms.  Treasure Island also has some nice restaurants to eat at as well.  We were married at Viva Las Vegas, which is right on the strip.  Everyone there was very nice and we had a wonderful time.  We went out by ourselves so it is nice that Viva Las Vegas has a live web cam so friends and family back home can see you getting married.  Getting married at a wedding chapel that is not connected with a hotel is a lot cheaper.  I think our wedding package was around 400.00 and that included everything including our proofs.  We had a limo that picked us up from our hotel, took us to get married and then brought us back.  This was a wonderful experience that neither of us will ever forget.  I would also suggest eating at Emeril's Delmonico Steakhouse as well as Hard Rock Cafe.  Any other info you would like I would be happy to share.  Conratulations and good luck!!!
I was just in Aruba -very nice island

Aruba is just like any other tourist destination where as long as you stay in the tourist areas, do not wonder off into the downtown areas at night and practice basic street-smarts, then there is no need for alarm and it is just as safe as any other place. I went to Aruba last month and we had a nice stay but I also went there years ago when I was about 16 w/my friend and her family. Of course we drank our little hearts out but we stayed in the hotel area and never wandered off. I will admit that we were harrassed by locals a bit (and I think it was because we were so young) but we ignored them and ALWAYS stayed together- we used our street smarts!!

It sounds as tho this young girl did not have as much street smarts as you or I.  I would never  leave with guys I just met by myself even if I were at a bar in my hometown area, nevermind in another country! It is common sense but unfortunately this young girl didn't know any better, or for whatever reason maybe she thought that she was safe with these boys and she probably thought they were just regular kids just like her & her friends. It is very sad that she possibly had to pay the ultimate price for what she thought was just an innocent mistake.

We as parents try to protect our children from so much, but at the same time, I think sometimes we are so focused on keeping the evil of the world out, that we possibly make our children more vulnerable.

Mine too!! Would love to be on that little island

Paradise Island Bahamas
It is beautiful there and lots to do
You know, I felt exactly like I had been "thrown off the island"

I never watch "Survivor" or any other reality TV show but I have heard enough about it to know how it works. It saddens me that our young people are growing up with that kind of example - plotting behind other people's backs, ganging up on one member of the "team", always being out for number one.

Maybe "Leave It To Beaver" and "The Andy Griffith Show" were unrealistic, but at least they had good role models and discussed issues such as being kind to others, being truthful, and being a good person.

I know there are good people in the world - I just wish there were more of them.

sounds good to me right about now. when's the next boat to the island?

St. Simons versus Jekyl Island
Jekyl Island is 7-8 miles south US 17 of St. Simons. They offer beautiful beaches, hotels, bike trails, golf, camping, and fishing. It is a more secluded vacation place. As you already know St. Simons has great restaurants, boutique shopping, etc. Just depends on what you are looking for in a vacation spot. I live in Brunswick. Hope this helps.
Majority of these came thru Ellis Island. Didnt

Love at first sight on the Long Island RailRoad
On the Long Island Railroad, traveling to Greenwich Village for the day and he traveling to a concert in Queens, NY.  The instant I looked at his face and he talked to me and sat across from me on the train, I knew we would make history together, I knew something was gonna happen between us.  He got off the train, I continued on to Greenwich Village, NYC..didnt get his number, nor he mine.  Four months later I was driving into my apartment parking lot and he was driving behind me, said he recognized me from my sunglasses as I looked in the rear view mirror.  He asked for my phone number and the rest is history..It was truly love at first sight..

YOU GO GIRL!!! SM

GURL - YOU SAID IT ALL!!!  STANDING OVATION TO YOU!!!

I just went on a rampage about these "wonderful moms" badgering a single mom about putting her kid in daycare so she could work... WHO CARES?!?!?  Why do they think their aggressive is worth so much -

I agree - UNITE...  CARE...  REASSURE...  We are all familiar with at lease one aspect of every ONE of our lives...   BE CONSIDERATE FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE...  Just because someone doesn't live their life like YOU do does NOT mean they are doing it WRONG....  Doesn't the BIBLE say to LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR....  we are ALL neighbors here, and I would lend a helping hand to anyone who asked it of me...

GEEZ - if you need a hormone adjustment, PLEASE get HELP... if it is the HEAT, GET IN A POOL!!!  There are some of THE most nasty replies on this board for NO REAL REASON except for those whose lives are miserable, so they wish to pass it on and create TURMOIL!!!  Just STOP!!!    Realize it is OKAY to be different, and to live different lives... and if someone comes to this board for empathy, those who wish to give it - please give it... those who have NO empathy... SHUT UP!!!

You go girl!!

I totally agree with you!!!  In my town, a LOT of the trailers are so much nicer than any of the homes.  When my husband and I first got married, we lived in a crappy apartment.  I would have so much rather lived in a nice trailer where I felt safe.  However, we live in Missouri, where it is tornado heaven in the springtime and I am a huge freak when it comes to tornados.

You shouldn't call someone a skank just because of where they live.  I would bet that some of the women living in the $300,000 houses are cheating wifes who actually deserve the word skank.

Keep up wtih good work, you should be proud of your family!!!

You go girl! sm

It was almost a year ago that I sat my family down and told them that I wanted to come home.  I had picked up a "side" account while working a full time job. I did the "side" account for 6 months and then gave my notice to the hospital I was working at as I found enough work to do at home.

It is the best thing I ever did and I actually make more money than I did in house because I'm happy and motivated.  I don't have to deal with the office witch, a run in my nylons, forgetting my lunch or having to drive the 45 miles round trip every morning.  I can stop what I'm doing and spend time with my kids or my grandbabies and I can get by on 5 gallons of gasoline a week at the very most.

Good luck!

You go girl...

We're proud of you.  I've been there, done that, exactly, a few years back.  This is one thing I leanred --  once things start going badly for him, and they will, he will shift his focus back to you -- everything going wrong for him will be YOUR fault.  If only you hadn't done this or that.... yada yada.  That way he doesn't have to take any responsiblity.  Please don't fall into this trap of even listening to it !!  Listening to it only feeds into him being more convinced of it !  Just remember you were smart enough to get rid of him, so go live the life you were meant to have!  If you don't do it for yourself, nobody else will do it for you !  Congrats.

You Go Girl!!!!

I had something very similar happen to me! The doctor dwindeled down my work to nothing and basically forced me to quit. What they did was give the work to a girl in the office who they did not have to pay a contract rate to and get off cheapter! I was infuriated!!! So I say, YOU GO GIRL...

Honey, you really are clueless. The Indian MTs are the upper class - they are not poor. They have college degrees, some of them have Medical degrees (takes 2 years over there, I think, but I could be wrong), and they have nannies for their children, get tea time paid for by the MT companies that employ them. Those employers also provide their transportation to and from work everyday. Does any U.S. employer do that?

40 years this might have been the land of opportunity, but not anymore. Illegals are swarming in here everyday - they are stealing our identities and making a mockey of our entire system of laws. Not to mention how they are clogging our schools, our health care system and our prisons.

We are under attack.
You said it..girl!...
Same for me, live in rural midwest. My last office job, I topped out at $11.30/hr with 20 years experience... Wow $$$, so by the time you counted in the car payment, gas, time commuting, the fact that I never would see my husband because he works odd shifts "on call" type schedule, etc. It just was not worth it. This way I can play/babysit with my grandson 3-4 days a week and work nights, etc. Manure shoveling sounds better than some of the office politics I've seen over the years, that's for sure! I agree, I wish the pay was more and it is sad that people want experienced transcriptionists for 6 cpl:(

Misha,

I'm still laughing so forgive me if I make a few "typos" o.k.?

Having taken a break from MT and working in a law firm for about four years in the mid-1980s, knowing what I know about attorneys, I think you should send it.  Lawyers, as much as doctors, have a great rivalry and there's nothing like publicity to whet a lawyer's appetite!  I say YOU GO GIRL.....
