I've had two dell laptops and 5 Dell PCs. Here's the thing...

Make sure you get the extended warranty, again, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. And, here is why.

My first laptop went out on my, though it was a couple of years old.  Because I had the extended warranty, a service tech came to my house, replaced motherboard, hard drive, heat sink, and keyboard.  He was able to back up everything first and restored it once all the new stuff was in place.

One of my PCs kept giving some weird blue screen error and I couldn't get to go even in safe mode. I called up Dell, told them the problem, they looked up my extended warranty and they sent someone out to repair it.

Overall, I have been happy with Dell products.  The only drag is that everything Dell sells regarding accessories is proprietary and you have to order it through Dell.  No generic accessories will work.  My suggestion is if you decide to buy a Dell laptop, make sure you get the car power supply and you might even get a 2nd regular power supply because I have been known to leave town and forget the power supply at the house.  Now, I have everything in my laptop bag for when I go out of town and can just throw my laptop in the bag and know everything is there.

Lastly, some Dell laptops require a special aircard to connect to the internet.  I ended up getting a 2 cabled USB air card and I'm glad I did because 2 USB plug ins give better reception than one.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I'm happy to help.

Looking at Dell laptops, need help plz..sm

I am going to purchase my first laptop with Dell but have no clue which one to get.  I will be working from home with it so I am not too concerned with wireless internet connection and all that.  Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

RUN FROM DELL LAPTOPS
Ish will never by a Dell again!!!
I just got my 5th Dell---have 2 laptops and 3 desktops - sm
My laptop which I bought used about 5 years ago has been acting up for about a year, so expect it to die soon, so bought a new/used Dell laptop to replace that (use for travel only basically). My desktop crashed last year, got it fixed, bought a backup though about 8 months ago to replace that one. My everyday one finally died right after Christmas. On my backup desktop used Dell now, but this is supposed to be my younger daughters computer (and just my backup for emergencies); so I went and ordered a new Dell last week (with XP though), just got it and plan on setting it up over the weekend. I am very happy with the Dell product. My first one lasted 6 years, my used laptop is about 8 years old and still going though it is dying, my new/used laptop is about 2 years old and in great shape; my backup is also about 2-3 years old but I expect it will last longer than 6 years as it will not be abused like my regular desktop. I am sure I will be happy with the new one. I had a Gateway before and it died after 4 years, so I find Dell more reliable.
I've searched and not all Dell laptops have the parallel port.
So I just wanted to check to see more specifics from those who have. Thanks.
Go do Dell.com and click on laptops. To the far right is an icon that says "looking for Windows
If you click on that, they offer computers that have XP on them already. I have not checked into this, but the prices listed are the same as for Vista computers. You might check it out, and let us know if it is legitimate. Good luck.
I have no idea if OfficeMax or Staples has them, but again, OM or Staples cannot help you when you
have problems. I know you need to keep the price down, but I am telling you it is worth it at least for the first couple of doctors to pay more and know exactly what you are doing, and have someone to call if you have problems. I would buy the cheapest model they have at Transcription Gear.  I have moved up to the better ones, but I believe they have one that is $225. If you have one or two single doctor offices that you can start with, that would be my recommendation. I use the Phillips 9450, which is way out of your price range.  I gladly pay it for all new offices because I have gone the route you are attempting to go and will NEVER go that route again.  If you can't go $225-230, look at what Phillips looks like so you will understand what I mean about emulating what most physicians have been using.  I am sorry if I said that I was using Panasonic in previous posts.  I forget it is Phillips and not Panasonic until I go looking for information. TG are fabulous people to deal with.  Good luck.
Write the representatives of their state because the holiday program wasn't exclusive?
Maybe you should ask yourself why it bothers you so much to include others. Sounds like you have a lot of underlying animosity toward blacks, Jews and others. Very sad.
That's because SpeedType is just a retail version of Shorthand. :)
x
Yes, Speedtype is overpriced retail version of Shorthand.
They are the exact same program except that Speedtype charges you for every list you want to import. Shorthand gives you the same conversion file with the program. The Productivity Talk forum has super tips for using Shorthand and other expanders. http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/index.php
I have both a Dell Latitude Laptop and a Dell Dimension desk top PC and bought both...
off of Ebay.  The laptop I paid $300 for had Windows XP and works great.  It wasn't wireless, but they sent me a PCI card with it and it works fine.  The desktop PC has XP on it as well and I paid $250 for it.  Both have Pentium IVs.  Both work great for work.  I have no complaints and I feel like I got a great deal both times out on Ebay.
Speedtype is retail version of Shorthand at a much higher price.
x
they were carrying most of the load
thats why they were sick at the end.
I would think carrying the rodents would be enough of a tradgey!
Here's another good one:
Increse Prozac to 40 tablets per day.

(obviously meant 40 mg)

Curious, how much of household bills is BF carrying?

is withdrawn?

If you are carrying the lion's share of the bills, then you surely will be better off when you have cut the ties and are in your own place.

If he is carrying a good bit of the bills, and you are then responsible for them when he moves - whoa - think about this.  Will any childsupport you manage to get suffice for what you are taking on that he is paying now?

And they quit carrying my favorite underpant, which they had

no, kill animals that are carrying the epidemic
to save the humans. Sorry if you don't agree with that.
Company provides a Dell for work, I have a Dell for personal use, too.

Dell customer service is overseas. I have had a Dell, a
Toshiba Satellite, and an HP.   The Dell was a piece of junk from day 1.  The HP hard drive crashed after 4 to 5 years, but otherwise no problems.   I bought a Toshiba about 6 months ago and it is okay, nothing special.  I was looking at the Sony Viao and the salesman said that some laptops are made to be portable, but that the Sony was not one of them, but the Toshiba was.   My keyboard also has a numerical pad on it, but it throws the other keys off a bit, so when I'm in a portable mode and don't have room for an external keyboard it really slows me down.  I have a Duo Core processor and notice no difference whatsoever in speed, the number of programs I can have open, etc.   I have also noticed that even when I am not on battery power that every so often the battery is charging.  I don't know if this is a defect or something that is supposed to happen, but I need to investigate it.
Why is MTStars carrying an ad "Make $5000 a month FT". Who can do this?
The MTSOs have lowered the rate per line (by the way, what is a line now? what is a character now?) and given us just the cream of the crap to try to decipher, there's no way 1 person can produce $5000 worth of transcription in a month.  No way.
Staples also
I also found a comfy office chair at Staples.  I still tuck a pillow behind my back for support.  It's one of the most important things you can do for yourself when you're straining your brain for hours on end.
Staples should have them. You can go to

the website and look and get an idea.

I currently use a laptop and no mouse other than what is on the laptop.  I have a keyboard tray that is fixed into position, can't push it in, so I have to stretch to use the laptop mouse and it does strain my shoulder.  I need to look into getting a mouse tray too.

I haven't specifically looked for mouse trays, but was recently looking for a new keyboard tray and there are some that the mouse tray comes with it and can be hooked on either side.

I don't like Dell. I bought a Dell laptop and it

was a piece of junk, so I'm not the one to ask if you should buy a Dell.   I'd get at least double that processor speed.  My computer is about 10 months old and I have 5 times that, which means that there is probably something faster out now, or soon will be.  It is more than I need for work, but I also use computer to download music/pictures, and a bunch of other stuff.   The Dell I had had 650 mHz and it was slow and that was almost 6 years ago.   You may have to customize anyway to get XP unless you buy one previously owned, which you can also buy from Dell.   It is always a good idea to buy bigger than you need currently just to allow for updates to any software or new software you may add.    You need to also think about tech support.  I know Dell has tech support in India, which can be extremely frustrating.  I don't know that other computer companies don't offshore their tech support, but that would be a question I would ask and find out if there is a locally authorized dealer to handle warranty repairs or if you need to send off the computer.    I would not recommend a Gateway computer and I would not recommend any computer that has a Celeron processor.   They tend to be in all the lower end computers.

I thought quality was a given. Speed and quality are not mutually exclusive. sm

I maintain 99% accuracy above on my reports.  However, the original question was regarding personal preference, and I have stated mine, and I respect your opinion as well.  :-)    I do think if I was working in an office or hospital setting, the setup you mentioned might be more profitable in the long run.  There are too many interruptions and such when you have other people running in and out, phones ringing, etc.

I doubt that anyone but me really cares about the lines per hour it takes for me to do a report.  They just want an accurate report in a timely manner.  I take pride in my work, and would never just slop something out for the sake of the almighty buck.   And, as an added incentive, I work for 2 companies, and one of them has my name on each report.  I don't have a problem with it, but I did think it was a bit unusual at first.

Oh well ... I must confess that what I'd TRULY like is to be paid lots of money to just sit and play Battle Phlinx on Pogo all day long, but as of yet, no such luck.

I got a nice comfy one at Staples for $99 - sm
relatively cushy and has arm rests too (if you want arm rests that is). Nice grey suede-like material too. I still have to squinch around sometimes just for a change in position but I think that is unavoidable with sitting so long.
I have seen them at Walmart and Staples. Lots
of online sales right now, though I guess delivery by Christmas might be pushing it. I think Staples has free shipping right now. Actually, even local pharmacies carry Cross pen sets normally located by the watches. Good luck to you!
Silly, but I use Staples. I have a rewards
card and am always getting $$ back from them. Plus now they give you $3 coupons for each empty ink cart you return. And I shop for the ink I use when its on sale. I really save a lot - probably 50% - on brand name ink via Staples. Am a happy camper! I have tried E-bay before. In fact, I am a power seller on E-Bay, but really had bad luck with ink carts in the long run.
my daughter swears by Staples....*S*...nm

like at staples? I haven't looked

a - because I just realized this is why my shoulder is hurting and b- because I don't want a new desk and I always seem to get talked into things I don't want.

Do Office Max or Staples carry the ones you mentioned?
Those are the only two office stores we have within an hour drive of me. Which models in particular would you recommend??? I do need to keep the price down, whether I buy them or the doctor's office does.

I do appreciate your feedback. :)
I bought an Acer monitor from Staples

It's been well over a year now...  Towers are a different story, but I've had pretty good luck with e-machines from Best Buy.

You can find different work gloves in Office Max, Best Buy, Staples,
s
I bought mine at Staples, generic brand for 9.99.

I am in agreement with you. sm
I haven't seen the word type ever, either.  I use the hyphen non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Am in 100% agreement with you...
this is what I have been talking about. This is a job and should be treated as such and not just a vehicle for you to be able to stay home. Thanks for the good post. Most of the MTs answering are really, really touchy about this because they are the ones trying to be supermom, wanting to put all else before their job and then wondering why falling short in pay, time to actually work, etc. I have never said not to love your family- you just really need to have a separation of work and family.
I am in agreement.
I doubt anyone is working for a national making that kind of money the OP asks about.  You need to cut out the middle man, take the initiative, and gain some accounts for yourself unless of course, you don't want to leave the house and don't want the responsibility of doing just that.  It does take more than just sitting at the computer to gain accounts.  JMO.  I have my own accounts, not large, and I'm not an MTSO, but I'm making $35,000.00 a year, and I don't work that hard, but I do have many, many years of experience.  The accounts I have were through the docs watching me transcribe on-site and being impressed and I'm not patting myself on the back, but I do believe being on-site for awhile can do wonders for your career.
Buy a Dell!! You can't go wrong with a Dell but
I bought an Emachines and had trouble with it from day one. I returned it, as the store I bought it from a six month return policy, so I returned it after about five months. I bought a Dell two years ago and have had no problems since!! Buy a Dell, you won't be sorry!! :)
I am not a Dell lover. My Dell has been
a lemon.  I just replaced mine with a Toshiba Satellite and I have seen a few others here recommend this.  Dell's customer service is in India.   The only thing I dislike about my Toshiba is that because it also has a number keypad the shift key is in a different position than I'm used to and I end up deleting and retyping when I use the laptop keyboard.  I normally use an external keyboard, but I travel a lot and try to work on the road and just don't have space for an external keyboard.
Where did you hear that everything you buy for a Dell has to be from Dell?

I have LOTS of peripherals on both my laptop and desktop Dells and they certainly didn't come from Dell. You've been misinformed.

I love my Dells.

total agreement with you - sm
I myself am in favor of trying to find out which hospitals outsource the work to India and then writing letters to the local newspapers as "letter to the editor" kind of thing to let the residents of the area know that their medical records are being sent out to India. But that's just my opinion.
do NOT sign any such agreement
x
I'm in total agreement with you.....sm

Do not kill them....unless poisonous or unless they strike!  They can be caught and released or given to someone or some group who specializes in handling snakes.

Killing is the coward's way out...killing something that you are 10 to 100+ times bigger than......unless of course it's about to strike or is poisonous!

non-compete agreement
GA girl, where are you? Do you have experience with a n.c. agreement in GA?
non-compete agreement
I read the posts below about the n.c. agreement and wonder if you have any knowledge of them. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
Exactly, a mutual agreement...sm
Where you find someone you can trust to do quality work and help each other out.

As I am preparing to go out on my own also, here's what I was thinking. (Now this is just a thought.)

You tell your prospect up front in the agreement stages of obtaining the account that on the rare occassion that you need to take time off - i.e., vacations, etc., that you will type the most important charts, up to a limited amount of charts, during that timeframe.

I thought I would take a laptop with me (yes, even on vacation) and type 1 hour or so.

Then, when you return, you will have the backlog typed in xxx amount of days at xxx discounted charge.

Just a thought. I'm also trying to network with local Independent Contractors to work out a mutually beneficial relationship with them.
You need to consider formalizing your agreement with them. sm

You don't sound like an IC to me but more like an employee. I would suggest that you clarify your status with this office by way of a contract that states the services you offer and what your charge is for your service. This should include the definition of a line and your per-line rate. Then, if they increase production, you increase your income, and it shouldn't really matter to you if it's thank-you letters or patient notes as long as you're getting paid. This also allows you to outline exactly what you are willing to do for this office. As a compromise, you may want to consider stating that you will supply a missing patient list at the end of each day. Then, stick to it.

This office sounds like it needs a REAL office manager and not  the doctor's wife who fills in or a manager who apparently doesn't know how to manage her own job.

Good luck!

I am in total agreement with
I also have many, many years of experience and find it hard to believe that the pay is only 7 cpl when in fact you must have a lot of experience and learn new platforms, accounts, etc.  Production suffers initially, and then all of a sudden these MTSOs want to switch you to another account, which makes it almost impossible to make a decent living at 7 cpl.
another voice in agreement with yours...
I've been doing this 13 years, some of it as a QA Editor (the only time I've ever heard of being promoted to a "higher position" yet making significantly less money...)and I agree with all of the above. My favorite is when you put in for a raise and get ignored, time and again, even though you are called a high producer and put on difficult accounts because you "do so well on them". Also, voice recognition is going to destroy this profession entirely probably sooner than later. It's all changing completely. I finally decided I'd had enough and went back to college a couple years ago to change professions entirely. In a year and a half, I'll have my new degree and be done with MT forever and it will probably be the happiest day of my life.
Here's a wry smile of agreement instead. NM

Confidentiality Agreement
Does anyone have a generic confidentiality agreement that they use for their clients.  I have new doc, and I don't have any agreement in my file.  I have signed theirs, but do not have one to offer the new doc.  Anybody have one or know where I can find one?  Thanks so much.
