She is telling the Gods truth! You all sm

have thrown stones at me for telling you the same thing or worded differently. It is the School of Hard Knocks! I don't understand why you don't believe this. Obviously your way isnt working.

There are many of us who have been doing this for 30 years or more who are in the same boat and not worrying.

That being said, I do feel for the ones who have been in school and worked for companies like MQ right out of school and don't have any more experience. The only way to do it is start over and go into a facility somewhere and work. I know there are not many facilities out there doing inhouse and with the overabundance of so-called MTs now it won't be easy, BUT it is the gospel truth what she is saying.

Besides, think about it, your way isn't working either!

it's possible they're telling the truth

I use Sylcount and ran two counts on the work I've done thus far this month:  lines and pages.  I have Sylcount set up to count spaces and tabs only.

These are my totals from 9/1/05 to 9/9/05 --
Total Lines:     9505
Total Pages:    333
Ave Lines/Page:   .2867867 (round up to 29 lines per page).

Three pages:  29 x 3 = 87 lines

Example? No.. I think they are telling the truth because its true.
x
8 years ago she was telling the truth-sm

and at that time, my income from just ONE job was $45,000 a year, and that job had great insurance/PTO/other benefits.  About 5 years ago it all changed, the income started dropping, and the benefits started getting harder to find and more expensive.

Today, I will be lucky to make $33,000 from my full time job and I have to supplement with part-time work.  I do have health insurance and it is about $100 a month for single, so I am lucky there.

Yes, it's time to do something else.  I'm tired.

Someone is not telling the truth - wake up! N/M

because they are of the Gods and thus smarter than you, and
have no clue they are hit and run liabilities...

There should be a required medical/legal, in's and out's class on dictation....something more than 'push this button and talk.'

My dream is to have them transcribe each other, but only if I can watch.

The truth will set you free and the truth is more low level income people w/o education or proper
skills to keep up their home or train their children live in trailer homes and low income housing. If that sets you off, maybe you should not visit these threads or read the posts regarding others viewpoints on trailer parks. They have zoning laws against them in many communities because they draw undesirable people are not particularly pleasing to the community as a whole, bringing property values down. If you have issues with this, seek out the government in various communities and have them change the laws. Fact is fact and you cannot dispute these facts.
The truth stings sometimes and I congratulate MTStars for having the kahoonas to post truth.
Tired of being lied to. I'm a big girl and can handle the truth. Why can't you?
Joint Commision and AAMT. Who made them gods? Do they
x
Opened a can of worms, eh? Truth hurts, but it is TRUTH!

8 cpl is about the top out in the US MT industry. If you're making more consider yourself lucky because it just might be snatched away from you at any moment. For the 14 cent per liner, good for you! You went out and got your own accounts. Others should follow your example. As far as the "stupid" MT comment, keep in mind that she was not consistent and **often** had one excuse after another not to work, yet I could see her online and when I would ask her why she was online she would give VERY lame excuses.  Also, keep in mind that I also was the one who helped this gal out monetarily to begin with and she took advantage of my generosity.  Don't make me out to be the bad gal here just because I own a service.  The shoe could easily be on your foot.

So, NEWS FLASH, if you have an MT position that is paying more than 8 cpl, consider it a real blessing and pray that your job isn't outsourced offshore.

You don't have to believe, the truth is the truth. I, too, have seen with my own two eyes and ha

years experience as an MT.  I say misfortune because MTs with this much experience usually have gigantic egos and feel like they've "seen it all and done it all."  They simply don't make mistakes.  Not possible, no way.  This particular MT became irate with me.  She actually threw her 20+ years experience in my face and said "I've been doing this for over 20 years, I think I know what I'm doing!"  It was painfully obvious, she did not have a clue.  She'd been doing it wrong for 20 years and no one ever told her, so she thought she was right.

I had another MT with 10 years experience call me to scream at me and hung up on me when I tried to explain her errors to her.

The plain truth is, some people can't take criticism whether it be constructive or destructive.  They don't like to be wrong or be told their wrong.  Egos get in the way.  We are all guilty of letting our egos get in the way from time to time, but in this field, you need to be willing to admit you're wrong and you need to be able to accept criticism gracefully and give criticism diplomatically.

As an editor, I encourage MTs to let me know if they disagree with any corrections I've made.  I am happy to provide MTs with my reference materials and resources.  I am happy to admit when I am wrong and I am happy to say that I make mistakes too.  Just don't try to tell me that an MT with 16 years experience can't possibly be making terminology mistakes - she can and probably has in the past and will again in the future.

So why are you telling me this?
I already said mine are grown.  And don't be so quick to judge others.  You have no idea what circumstances others are in.  Judge not, lest you be judged.
I'm telling ya!
Gotta agree, but I worried that messing with the structure of his mouth might take away from that voice. It gives me goosebumps too!
You could certainly help us out by telling us what the...sm

platform was that turned out to be a low-line maker.....

And tell us the one that has been good too!!!

Thanks!

Thanks for telling me this!

I now have been contacted by four others who went through the same thing.  This will really help if they don't respond to the complaints I filed.  Thanks for taking the time to tell me.

Dianne

So what you are telling me is...
I should just go ahead and apply at places states I have two years experience and test for them.  Then, I can get experience without any? Kinda?
The OP WAS telling it like it is.......nm
x
Keep telling it, maybe they will sm
listen to you. They are not listening to me! You said it exactly as it is. This is not a "school" career. It is by learning. Maybe the school gets you started, but it still takes years of learning.

I do feel sorry for the folks who went to these schools thinking that was all they needed because they really got taken advantage of. I don't know if any hospitals these days train folks or not. My opinion is if you have been in school then you need to go work in a hospital/medical center/teaching facility for several years before EVER trying to coming home and do this. you just cannot make any money at this working on production coming out of school. There is no way. Let me rephrase that, maybe you can but on a limited basis with an easy account, not a lot of foreign dictators, one or two work types etc. But, in order to do everything it takes YEARS!
Uh, yea? Do people really think it's going to go away? I'm telling you...
Those who protest our efforts to defeat terrorism, and those who hate George Bush more than they hate those who want to kill us, really need to wake up.  These people have the ONE thing that we DON'T have...... Patience.  So many people would like to think that 9/11 is a thing of the past and that if we just mind our own business, this will all go away.  They will out wait us, because they know that we have no patience, and they will strike again.  If we don't remain on the offense, no matter how unpopular it make be among the "kum-ba-ya" crowd, we will eventually perish.  Giving "peace a chance" will be the end of us.  These people don't operate as we do, and we better realize that right now before it's too late.
Do you mind telling us
who you work for now?
My DH was telling me McDonalds was going to do this too,
but inside the US...not India. I think we should boycott the drive throughs that don't use in-house workers. Take the time to walk inside and place your order with a real person and make it a point to say so. Of course, the only way it will make a real statement is if EVERYONE does it, so what's the chance of that. So we'll watch our MINIMUM WAGE jobs now just creep away as if nothing is wrong, right!
Would you mind telling me..sm
Did it take you long to learn to use it and where you purchased it? I have only found it for about 189.00 and was hoping to find somewhere that sold it a little cheaper. Thanks in advance.
Please consider telling us what company
Please.
I was just telling my DH what a cute name that is!
x
I just got through telling someone yesterday
what I do and they said what I have heard umpteem times before: "Hey, I can do that, too." ARGH!
Just telling it as I see it after all these years
in the business, know what I am talking about. I was told by a manager in the early 90s I would not see voice recognition in my lifetime. Well, guess what folks, it is here and automation is taking over a lot. I am thankful for the money I made in the past in order to raise a family and it was excellent money BUT I am right on the money as far as what I have said, just type faster because I do not see this as a profitable job as it once was. Some agree and some won't but the business is down the drain for MTs these days. In the 80s I worked outside my regular 40 hr week and charged $20 an hour - wonder how many places pay that now?? You are lucky if you have any.
Do you mind telling me how to do that? sm
This Vista experience has already given me a headache.......any help much, much appreciated. Thanks.
Everyone is telling her she has no choice
because if her employer says "jump", she should say "how high". What was she supposed to do when they said work from home, say "No". She was just criticized on an earlier post for standing up for herself and telling her employer no. There are many on this site that have to be "right" about everything. Contradiction is not "right".
If she was a recruiter, she would be telling--sm
where she works and plastering the name everywhere. Obviously she has not done that.

There are too many other *unhappy* ones trying to jump on her bandwagon. I wouldn't tell anyone else either, if I were her. I wish her all the best.
I'm educated, too, but you don't see me telling
medical providers what they should or shouldn't say in their reports. You knew this would blow up when you posted it, so don't play all innocent victim here. What does using one word have to do with the patient's privacy? It certainly didn't stop YOU from posting it on the Internet!
Right, Mary...Keep telling yourself that
.
That's what management is telling us. sm
It seems if someone can edit 1000 lines an hour you wouldn't need many people to cover an account and/or you would always be running out of work.
The above poster was telling it like it is
I was making big bucks back in the 80s and outsourced, went to another place making 20 thousand less, outsourced again and now work for a company making 20 thousand less, so add it up and that is 40 thousand less than the job in the 80s. VR has and is cutting what an MTer is making and from what I am reading on the boards, companies are going even lower than say 4 years ago in the salary. Maybe you have not done this job long enough to know how it has sunk but it has. I first trained on the job in 1973 and older MTers know this. It is not a good profession like it once was. I would never tell anyone to get into this job- only if you have other income and just want a full time job for part time pay. The job where I have worked for 19 years now has ESLs coming out the woodwork. We did not have this when I started there in 2000. It has changed and not for the better. You are sugarcoating something that sinks more and more each year. I raised a family on what I USED to make but now only work still because I do not have a family to raise- could not on the salary places pay. I would definitely tell anyone now thinking about this as a profession to think again. People say - I want to work at home so I can stay with my children- this alone has hurt this profession. We are thought as not having a real job to start with. People think you work from home- you got plenty of time. I hate it when I see- Oh, I get to stay home with my kids, not that they love the work - just to be at home. And people wonder why this job has sunk so low??
I found it very telling...
... that after all this time of trying to get everybody to "upgrade" to Vista, last summer Microsquish finally "saw the light" and released XP service pack 3. All the tech people I have ever talked to opined that Vista was the biggest hole in the ground ever to come down the Microsquish pipeline. And now they're getting ready to inflict another new version on us. Good grief.

I applied/interviewed for something like 30 jobs last fall; and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, without exception, REQUIRED XP. If I'd jumped on that Vista bandwagon, I'd have been shucks-outa-luck.
BTW, would you mind telling me sm
what he did or did not do?

My husband is the worst when it comes to telling me I don't get out
enough.  He doesn't realize that I never liked the office politics at an outside job.  I never, ever did anything social with my coworkers.  He's an extrovert and a social butterfly.  I like people and I like to have fun, but I would rather spend fewer hours working and more hours with my family than to spend time in a negative office environment.  Also, don't most mothers and wives give up a lot of their friendships?  It's a sacrifice we make because there's not enough time in a day.  I still have friends.  However, most of my friends were guys before I got married.  Male/female platonic friendships pretty much stop after the "I dos".  The rest of my friends moved out of state.  And everyone else is busy with their own husband and children.  We get together maybe once a month.
13 cpl, 26 years exp, also not telling name of company.. nm
.
It's a semi polite way of telling someone to

"F--- off".

i've started telling him that he better
never start a fight, but he can stand up for himself and finish it!! the direction our country is headed is terrifying!
You usually have to pay for FTP, she was telling us this site is free.

FTP transfers voice files from your doctor or company you work for to you. Actually, many national MT companies require you to have FTP access, so this is good even if you don't think you will use it right now. Later when you need it, the free offer will be gone and you will need it but will have to pay $$$

I AM SO MAD I COULD SPIT! I can't believe what the posters below are telling you!
My husband installs hardwood floors for a living. Because of the house boom there are times when he works for 2 or 3 weeks straight. On his day off, he sleeps most of the day - which is probably what your hubby is doing. Like another poster stated, he probably does not realize what it's like on your end. He's looking at a day off with peace and quiet. Sure he misses you and the kids, but for some reason men always seem to see things differently. Just don't mention coming to see him and I bet he calls you and asks you to come on his next day off. Just give him time and DON'T LISTEN TO THE MANHATERS BELOW!
Stop telling me how to punctuate!!!!!
I have at least two doctors that say *comma* after every single sentence. It drives me crazy!! If they had their way the whole report would be one long run on sentence. UGH!!!
Oh, sure. I can see telling 62 year old DH to "go outside". LOL
NM
PS: They kept telling us it "wasn't going to INDIA!"
:(
Wow - 30 minutes. Well, you're telling me what I want to know!
nm
As far as them telling you notes are missing...sm
you can always cut and paste names into a log. That way, they can't claim to be missing certain notes.
Why do you keep telling everyone to move on from MTing?
And just let it go. This is our profession. Why would we want to just move on and let it go? THAT is what makes no sense.
I don't want the govt telling businesses how
That is MY privilege to negotiate with my employer!

Too much interference by governments already by forcing minimum wage, etc.

You'll have businesses closing down if you put too much mandatory regulation in the mix. It's a free enterprise, you know.

Thanks for the reassurance. This just never happened before, telling me they would contact me, and

then not following through, and with it happening twice, I thought it very strange.

I was e-mailing with a lady from this forum last year some time and she called herself a transcription ho!  That was about the funniest thing I had ever heard!  Guess I'm becoming one too!

Would you'all mind telling me where you ordered from? sm
I plan to order mine in the next month or two and understand you can order from distributors. Of course I would like the best deal on price and shipping and want to be sure I order from a reliable source and wonder where each of you ended up buying yours. Thanks for any help!
Working at home, do you ever have people telling you
You need to get out more, or why did you pick such an isolating job?  This is something that always bugs me, because the reason why I was drawn to medical transcription, is because I love working independently and have never been one to participate in office politics.  It seemed no matter how hard you tried, someone in the office wasn't going to be happy with you.  So i'm delighted beyond belief to be working in the comfort of my own home.  I don't deal with traffic or road rage on a daily basis, don't have to dress up or be 'on' for people every day, so it would seem that would take stress off the average person?  Yet when I tell people my profession, I get this horrified look from them, "thats not very social" or "don't you go crazy working alone?" and also my family has been telling me for years I "need" to get out and be around people etc.  I go to school, volunteer, and also am part of a club, yet I get this on a regular basis.  I feel so defensive, I want to scream sometimes.  Anyone else deal with this???
how about switching it around and telling the people who run the show that you really can't
expect any more out of people who have not received increases in pay in years, are swamped with ESLs and American mushmouths and they really should stop and think about the pay rate being increased so you aren't faced with this scenario.  how about representing the MTs interests instead of sucking up to the big boys?
