Short term memory shot to Hades

Posted By: AnnieM!AnnieM! on 2007-08-16
In Reply to: Acronyms - Rad MT

So sorry, Rad MT - I could not remember for the life of me who suggested making shortcuts for capitalized terms!

I did all the vertebral levels, except thoracic spine levels 2-11 'cause when do you ever type anything pertaining to the middle of the thoracic spine? HA! That's all I had today! Now I will go back in and make shortcuts for the rest of the thoracic spine.

Thanks for that tip.

Short-term memory problems..sm
My SIL gave me a sign a few years ago that hangs in my office that says, "I think I am going through mental pause!"   I use sticky notes to make many lists, too.  You're not alone!
short term cure ...
OK thank you to the responders, I am going with a hot cup of coffee and extra sweetener .... knowing I am NOT ALONE helps, too!   Thanks a bunch -- now down the hatch and onto SOME NEW THOUGHTS ..... !
I don't know about renting short term,
I think you could rent it and then return it, but you would have to ask. A friend of my rented-to-buy a Dell PC from them and learned a lesson. She paid approx. 200 every two weeks for almost a year. You will pay 3-4 times what the product is actually worth.
If you have a short-term disability

policy (from your company or if you happen to have one on yourself) you should be covered.  If not, you are probably out of luck as far as disability goes.

I'm not sure what type of disability you're asking about.  If you mean long-term disability you'd have to have a policy in place for that also and I think it kicks in 6 months after your disability date.

If you meant Soc Security disability, I can safely say you wouldn't be covered.  You have to be permanently disabled for that.

You can usually purchase short-term disability from
your employer if they offer long-term disability. When it is offered, you usually choose the reimbursement rate, typically up to 70% of your pay.

Savings. LOL That's the way you'll make up the difference. Sadly, disability insurance (LT or ST) has never covered 100% of missing pay.
long and short term fixes
Keep ants from coming back by washing the area they were invading with ammonia to kill the scent they leave as a trail.

White flour (the kind you bake with) put over an ant hill (thick coat)or on the floor where they are invading, etc. will make the ants move to another place, but does not kill them, but is fast for getting rid of a big colony in your back yard.

Green Light is a commercial product that will kill the ants like Tarro does, but is not as fast as making them move somewhere else.

There are some short-term insurance policies out there that cover you betweens job but do know that
they will not constitute as having "real" insurance thus the same has having had no insurance for those few months. I stupidly got a short-term policy for three months until my new insurance would kick in and it ended up not meaning anything to my new insurance. I had to wait a year for my preexisiting. This was Regence Blue Shield and others could be the same way. If nothing else, get a cheap high deductible plan ASAP to kick in right away if you dont want to take the Cobra.
Unions may be good for workers short-term, but look what has happened to American car union workers.
They priced themselves out of the market while making an inferior product. Ford and GM are now junk bonds. I'm driving a Toyota. So if that's un-American just like shopping at a non-union store like Walmart, well you can talk to whoever is in charge of wages and taxes who have created this monster where even middle-class has very little extra money to support a union store where the employees are paid well and you pay the price in the product they sell. I can't afford it.
8 is NOT good if never going any higher - good to get the rust out in the short term though

q. re short-term disability vs state disability

my short-term disability insurance coverage option says it pays when there is no state disability plan.  How does one find out if the state she resides in has such a plan?

Insurances seem like such a racket.  Seems they should not be allowed to take your $ if they are not required to pay-out in the event of a disability.

Thanks for any help.

Ditto, short ERs or short OPs....short anything! sm
And I especially don't like long OPs, they are the most boring for me, and the doctors pause a lot cause they have to think more. I just want to be done with it! Next!!! ; )
Long short forms vs short short forms

Carla,

A long short form is usually easier to remember. So I would definitely assign the short forms as suggested by Kelli:
SmithCThead
SmithCTabdomen
etc

In most Expander programs you would opt for a short short form as you have to type the whole short form before you can expand.
In Instant Text you don't have to type the whole short form: you type the first two letters of your long short form and then you can type any of the following letters.
So in this case you would type smcth for the first one, smcta, and you may also type smhead, smabd

This is possible when you use the Instant Text marker key to expand. If you use the space bar to expand, you may be better off assigning the initials as suggested in the second response, as you would not be able to "jump ahead".

Screen shot
Can someone tell me how to make a screen shot of whatever is on my computer screen?  Sometimes it helps to have a screen shot when contacting the IT department for help.
Thanks everybody. Will give one of these a shot.

I'm willing to give it a shot
or kids or sex life. I've sworn off men. I'm 35 years old today and have found that most guys my age are married, jerks or divorced with good reason.

I don't have much choice. I love working from home...I just can't afford to run out of work.
I Shot the Sheriff
We had recorded the show and that one contestant we have to play over and over and over and each time we laugh.  My son thinks that was so funny how he just kept singing the same thing.
I will give it a shot.
I think I will try that. My husband use to be very clean though. I don't know what happened, but I have started feeling like I am a slave around the house. It seems like I work and clean and cook and pick up after my two little kids and my HUSBAND. I don't think it's fair that he has time to set on the couch and watch movies while I am cleaning up after him. Thanks for the advice.

Tired of never have time to relax!
o.k. I'll take a shot at it...

First of all, you may be very good at what you do. That does not mean that you would be good at TEACHING what you do. Developing a curriculum and working with different learning types is a big job. That's why educators keep going to school to learn how to do it.

Second, what is your plan? Having newbies pay you an additional $500 for more training, after they have already paid $1300, $1500, $2000? You would be competing against the schools who INSIST they turn out job ready MT's. M-Tec, etc. would be all over you. In addition, the newbies themselves believe they come out of school ready to work. Now, we all know different, which is why we don't hire newbies, but the majority of them don't "get it." And they sure ain't going to be happy about forking out more money.

Third, crunch the numbers. If they pay you $500 tuition, in order to bring in $30,000 you would have to 60 people sign up. But don't forget they just sign up for their 3 months exp. or 6 months exp and then they are GONE! And they need to be replaced. You would need to be having 10 people per month sign on with you.

Finally, why would you encourage people you care about to invest time and money in a dying field? It would be like training them to be typewriter repairmen. Or maybe professional ironers, in a permanent-press world. The field is changing. If you have been on this board any length of time, you have seen the wages go down. Remember when we used to get 9 and 10 cpl routinely? Now it's 6-7, maybe 8. How about the MULTIPLE postings from people who have lost jobs to VR and EMR? How about the MT's complaining about the dictators that are left, ESL all the way, baby. And we won't even go offshore.

So if you're obsessed with the idea of helping people, I might suggest literacy tutor training or ESL teaching or even doing a short stint in Africa, working at an orphanage

Shot in the dark
here, and I know if you knew the answer to this you would have already done it. I sense your frustration, I understand what you are saying. Can you go in to the program files and totally delete the file that stores the tmp files? Maybe if it didn't have anywhere to put them it couldn't store them? Sorry, I'm no programer, but that was the first thing that came to mind.
okay, I did (screen shot) and I sent it.....
to the person who had responded to my original question and asked her to address this. Thank you for providing the link. It will be interesting to see how they respond to this one. I am so naive; I expect everyone to play fair and be nice, and obviously they don't. Where she makes the comment about "imposters here" and she would rather have someone else qualified in India handle her record, I told her I think their focus should be on making sure everyone here IS qualified and not making sure the Indian workers are qualified. Like I said, it will be interesting to see how they respond. I will keep you posted on it if people are interested in hearing their answer.
You can give it a shot.
I would suggest looking at company websites and maybe e-mailing their HR or recruiters. Like the previous poster said, QA people don't seem to make too much, but if all you want are benefits out of the job, it is worth a shot.

Good luck.

...he might go the way of Steve Mandell, the former CEO who was force marched out last winter.  Everyone who ever worked there in management seems to have been fired, so this guy isn't immune.  That company has never made any money and their bankroll, HCR ManorCare, has stepped in and taken over and has demanded that they sell. Heartland's quality is a joke.  I know, because I used to work there.
Or try Folex or Spot Shot.

Don't know if this is the same problem, but worth a shot SM

my foot pedal was working fine and then...nothing!  Looked fine...I was very confused.  Called my boss and he said to check the card that the foot pedal was plugged into (mine is not a USB).  I turned off computer (and powered off the power strip just to be safe), took off the side panel, and sure enough the sound card that the pedal was plugged into was partially disconnectly.  I firmly (yet gently) reinserted it completely, put side panel back on, turned on power strip then computer, and then waalaa (sp? lol) it worked like a charm.

Don't know if this is your problem or not, but I figured I'd share my experience just in case.  Good luck!

I had a cortisone shot that worked for me.
I had underwent OT for weeks and then saw an orthopaedic surgeon who scheduled me for a cortisone injection into the joints and since then NO PROBLEMS!!!! I do stretches and have a split keyboard now that I didn't have before then, but it has been over a year with no aches! :) My repetitive case may not have been as bad as yours though.
What about a glamour shot portrait of you? sm

Give it a shot, but don't knock yourself out.

Just adopt a steady, calm exterior as you perform both jobs.  I would not try to get it all done.  I would do what I could but not frantically.  That's all you can physically do.  They can't expect all of it to get done with all of those interruptions.  It's not conducive to doing good work for either "hat" you are wearing.

And since they are so fond of doubling up duties, tell them you'd like a free Pap smear, since they are doctors and went to med school.  Sheesh.  This is the most put-upon career, and it never stops to astonish me what new lows people will go to, to cheat us.  They must be good limbo dancers.

Good luck to you.

ROFL! Thanks for the memory.
It was horrible at my last job.  The supervisor told us to never, ever touch the thermostat.  She'd sit in her office with a heating vent and get too hot, so she'd turn the heat down.  My cubicle was by the windows in the winter with subzero temperatures.  I was so cold that I had on my winter coat, gloves and a blanket.  Then in the summertime, it was too hot with the sun reflecting through the windows.  I used to climb up on my desk and change the thermostat anyway.  I loved ticking that woman off because she was such a shrew.  She was firing any employee who had more than 10 years of service because they were making too much money.  She could hire college grads with more technical skills at lower wages.  So much for not discriminating against people for their age.  The things she wrote them up for were asinine.
well, he did say he has diminished memory!

that's a memory buster

Off topic, but cute.

This was around the late 1980s ... my oldest was around 8 or 9 years of age. My parents, (now ex-) husband, and I were playing Trivial Pursuit. It was the Entertainment category. My daughter wanted to read the next question (about the TV show "Bonanza") and instead of saying Virginia she said vagina.

Pause and then four adults became unglued. And my daughter is just sitting there looking totally baffled ("What'd I say?)

"I'll explain it in about 10 years, sweetheart."

and if you don't have a good memory?

how will you remember all of these abbreviations?

SmarType, Instant Text, Shorthand, ShortCut, and so forth all require some sort of memory retention. That's a fact. And using the Keystrokes book (which I have) doesn't help either. You can use all of the systems you want (including the abcz system), but when you're dealing with overlapping phrases that use the same letters, it STILL boils down to remembering things.

If your memory is not good, you're up that well-known creek.

You can upgrade memory. 512 RAM is
better, 256 would be sufficient though.   In the car you would use the foot pedal same as at home.  Put it on the floorboard and push or use hot keys.   If you are going  to travel and work would need alternative ways to download - cell phone, WiFi, dial-up, etc.  I download before I go and use my cell phone to upload if I'm not somewhere where I have another option when I need to send in work.   You can use the laptop keyboard or figure a way to use an external keyboard depending on how much space you have.
Can anyone refresh my memory....

in Windows XP, how can I see what programs are running automatically on startup?  I should know this, but for some reason my brain is not cooperating!

TIA!!

I don't think it will. But I can't say for sure. If memory serves, you can't have both pr
running simultaneously and switch back and forth, the pedal won't work or it will only work with one but not the other.  However, if you've configured your pedal in both programs, then it should work with each program separately.
Re: Memory problems
Even though you're only 39 it could hormonal. My doctor told me the eary stages of menopause can start in your late 30's and does affect your memory.
Memory problems...
In the last year or so, I have noticed I am having problems with my short-term memory.  Not just the usual walking into a room and wondering, "Now, why did I come in here?" although I do that, too.  My work space is in my basement and unless I write something down as soon as I think of it, by the time I walk up the stairs, it's gone.  I was at my GYN this spring and told her about it.  She tested my blood sugar and did a thyroid panel and they were fine.  I just turned 39, so I feel like I am too young for this.  I have no trouble remembering medical terms for work or with remembering things from years ago, it's just the day-to-day stuff that I feel I should be able to remember and just can't.  My husband just laughs but I am so frustrated!
