Thanks for the replies.  Satellite is all that is available where I live.  I've used it with other platforms and with FTP sites without problems (of course I don't have anything else to compare it to speed-wise.)  I just wasn't sure if the VPN part of it made a difference.  Still interested in any other opinions/experiences with this.
