Definitely not one of those.  I've been looking at NC snake pictures and from what I can tell, it doesn't seem to be one of the poisonous snakes.  I didn't get a really good look at him since he was down in the vent.  The flashlight helped but hard to see the markings.  I was afraid to get too close to look even though the vent was separating us.  He was brown though, like a muddy brown.  Didn't look as if he could fit through the vent but I wasn't taking any chances.  Who knows where he has slithered off to or if he has any friends.  Eww.  Thanks for the info.
