If I can remember correctly, I was once told that you needed their internet service - which I do not need nor want - just want to get rid of my expensive land line.

...I have not been one to judge quickly because there is so much blame game going on but this.......it's just inexcusable and if proven (which I'm believing it to be if the AP has the memo), then Mike Brown not only needs to lose his job immediately but also needs to stand trial for negligent homicide in all the deaths that could have been prevented IF he had not worried about his "wording, CYA he was doing" in that memo, thank God for the common folk who had the decency to start with their humanitarian efforts and got down there when they did and despite.FEMA. I also heard that several companies like Wal-mart and RV companies were turned away because of not having the proper contracts ready, duh...FEMA did not provide them

How DARE he????????? In my book, he will be at the head of the line of many who did not want to give up their "power" along the way to help the very people who they were voted by and sworn to represent

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House majority leader late Tuesday tried to deflect criticism of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina by saying "the emergency response system was set up to work from the bottom up," then announced a short time later that House hearings examining that response had been canceled.

Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said House Republican leaders instead want a joint House-Senate panel set up to conduct a "congressional review" of the issue.

Tempers flared Tuesday during a contentious closed-door meeting between House members and Cabinet secretaries in charge of directing Katrina relief efforts. A Republican representative stood up and said, "All of you deserve failing grades. The response was a disaster," CNN was told by lawmakers emerging from the meeting.

But DeLay countered that assessment later in a news conference by saying that the onus for responding to emergencies fell to local officials.

"It's the local officials trying to handle the problem. When they can't handle the problem, they go to the state, and the state does what they can to, and if they need assistance from FEMA and the federal government they ask for it and it's delivered," DeLay said.

He added that Alabama and Mississippi did a much better job of responding quickly than Louisiana. Alabama and Mississippi have Republican governors.

That terrible business venture .... did you mean "Vonage" versus "Verizon"? Okay, if you did then you should know that is a realistic gamble you will always have to take with Vonage and computer down-time. That is just how it is. Computer is down, work does not get done. Second, check the archives on this board for negative Vonage comments. I, for one, have had nothing but a big fat negative experience with Vonage. Spent 6 hours -- HOURS! -- in total over the telephone with every "rep" that Vonage seemed to have, most of them The Patels from India type reps (all called Jason or Tom, yeah right), and even the American sounding reps could just not get there stuff together.

I was a residential user with a single phone line and NOTHING fancy involved, but they just could not get us hooked up. Oy veh!, the frustration. And that was just getting us SET UP? We canceled before going any further. The money savings is substantial, so we gave them every chance to prove themselves, but it just did not work out. Good luck to you. Not a lot of fantastic options, unfortunately.

Comes with practically everything. Only $24.99 a month and unlimited long distance. You have to have Cable or DSL for it to work though.

I am thinking of getting Vonage phone service. Does it really work that well and how easy is it to set up? I know the ads say that it is 24.95/month, is this really accurate? Has anyone experienced any hidden costs.

Just trying to test the waters before jumping in. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Not that kind of problem. I am getting circuit is busy messages and when I cannot connect to my account I am getting dropped every couple of minutes and then have to try multiple times to get a connection. Oh well it seems to be getting better have actually been able to type five reports so far without getting dropped. Thanks

For the first time. I now have to get unlimited long distance service. I need to take care of this today and have been recommended Vonage.

I took a look at their website, but was wondering if anyone could give me some more info. I saw something about being able to hook up 2 phones to what they send you. I have 2 phones and my C-phone that I need hooked up. One will be downstairs. Is this possible to do?

Also, what is a rough estimate of your bill? If I get this service with them, I am assuming I can drop my regular phone service. How much do you pay down too? It says you get a refund on that money, but I wanted to see how much.

My other option I was thinking of was getting the phone service through Time Warner. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Does anyone know a phone person (like a private company) that would make this work for us? There must be some way to program your pedal or tweak the software, but I have no resources here to find out. Does anyone?

My Vonage service was highly variable - fine for one call, rotten the next. I dumped 'em.

More to the point, 800 numbers aren't cheap, even with Vonage. You pay from about 5 cents per minute with Vonage ($4.95/mo gets you 100 incoming minutes) up to 7 cents or even more.

There's better ways to skin this cat. For instance, you can buy a Skype incoming number for $30 a year.

Or you can get your doc the encrypted version of Express Dictate (NCH) for $55 or so (one-time charge), which lets him dictate and send it to you in a variety of ways including email, using the free Express Scribe app on your end.

I've used both these methods (Skype and NCH software) with great success. And if you use the NCH approach, when you get more docs you can upgrade to a more robust system from NCH like Web Dictate, which is very reasonable for a dictation system. They also have Pocket Dictate and Palm Dictate for PDAs. Check 'em out.
