I went through the same thing you describe...my house was the gathering place for all even though I only had 1 of my own. Now he's grown and out on his own and I could not stand the silence nor the lack of being needed.

Went through months of training and now I have 2 little ones again, foster kids! There's always such a great need for a good home and age is not a problem, I'm a year older than you. I got them a week before Christmas which made the Santa scrambling hectic but what a joy it was to have those noises back again and they needed it so much in their chaotic lives.
