one drawback on laptop

I sure a laptop a great deal for travel.  The only real drawback is that most laptops no longer have a serial port, and some services/platforms require a serial or game port foot pedal.  Most foot pedals will not work correctly with an adapter, so be sure you check into it.  If you are ordering a laptop, be sure that a serial port can be installed at the time of building it.

The other drawback is that the speed of the motherboard is not like a desktop -- due to heat factors inside the laptop case, they cannot put the fast motherboards in - so be sure you get a 7200 hard drive (speed) and if you can afford it, at least 1 meg of RAM to compensate.

Your success with a laptop will depend a great deal on who you work for and how you receive your work.

Good luck.

Seeing the screen was my drawback...
working outside, but I found a screen cover (similar to a privacy screen at a bank) that allows me to see in sunlight. I have a second keyboard & mouse for my laptop and wireless internet connection, so all I need now is a second footpedal, and I have 2 complete systems to transcribe on.  I find being outside when the weather is pleasant keeps me more alert and is definitely a nice change of scenery...which definitely makes me more productive.
