Of course, it never happens that way. But when you are an IC they are most definitely not your boss. Never mind that I've ICed for companies where they even referred to who they recently contracted with as "their new hires." Ooops!  On occasion, these services that use ICs but seem to cross the line do get audited and then they can't be quicker about asking you for your business card to prove that you have other clients! It's all backwards, if you ask me -- first of all, when we test shouldn't we know how much the service is willing to pay before we go through the trouble of testing? Anyway, they usually say "well, we pay..." but if they are our clients I believe we can counter with what we charge. I could go on and on about this! If we want to keep our financial bases covered, health insurance, disability insurance, paid vacation and sick days, etc we would be charging them more than, frankly, they are willing to pay. In my humble experience anyway.

I just blogged about this this a.m., about raising your rates.

And I found a scary article this a.m. that says if you want to go from employee to self-employed, you've got to take your hourly salary and times that by 2.5!! I'm still doing the math on that to see if that is true...
