Bill Gates bets $84M on corn power
Investment in ethanol manufacturer by Microsoft founder shakes up industry.
December 13, 2005: 6:41 PM EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - When the richest man in the world invests $84 million in a company, you can be sure Wall Street notices.

That's why Neil Koehler, president and chief executive of Pacific Ethanol Inc. (Research), was looking as if he had won the Powerball jackpot on Tuesday.

"It gave us instant credibility and the equity financing to be very credible and real with our (business) plan," he said of the investment by Bill Gates, the Microsoft Corp. (Research) founder, whose personal fortune of $46.5 billion topped Forbes magazine's list of the world's richest again this year.

"It really differentiated us from the pack," Koehler said. Gates' investment firm, Cascade Investment, agreed last month to buy 5.25 million preferred shares in Pacific Ethanol, a producer of the corn-based fuel hailed by environmentalists as an answer to the earth's dwindling supply of petroleum.

The financing, in which the preferred shares will be converted into common stock, is expected to close in January and will net the Fresno, California-based company $84 million.

The Gates ripple effect

In an interview at Reuters' Times Square offices, Koehler said Gates' investment was a sign that ethanol can be a viable alternative to oil at a time of see-sawing gasoline prices and concerns about global warming and climate change.

"It's all coalescing and, obviously, a smart investor like Bill Gates sees that," said Koehler, who was in New York to attract institutional investors.

Gates' money will help Pacific Ethanol proceed with its plan to initially build five plants on the West Coast to process Midwestern corn into ethanol, he said.

"It's not only had a huge impact on our operations, but it's had a huge ripple effect on the whole industry. It has really caused a stir in the ethanol industry that Bill Gates has stepped up and said: 'I believe in ethanol.'"

The company went public in March and the $84 million will help finance the plant construction.

"This was very much our strategy and they very much synched up and helped us make it more real," he said. "They had decided they wanted to get into ethanol and had looked at many companies before they found us."

Despite the investment, Koehler has not met Gates, who is also known as a philanthropist.

"He's pretty hands-off," he said.

But just the name is enough to attract attention from Wall Street and oil companies, said Koehler.

"With Bill Gates and that whole left-wing, progressive position that he has and the philanthropic thing, it reinforces ethanol's green stamp," he added.

Ethanol versus oil

With crude oil at $50+ per barrel, Koehler sees the market for ethanol-burning vehicles growing. Already, U.S. gasoline contains about 10 percent ethanol and Ford (Research) and General Motors (Research) are developing cars to run on 80 percent ethanol.

With 150 billion gallons of gasoline sold in the United States each year, that represents some 15 billion gallons of ethanol.

"We could do what Brazil's done and have 30, 40 percent of our transportation fuel renewable," he said.

Brazil, which makes ethanol from sugar cane, and the United States are the two largest ethanol-producing countries, he added.

"It's a common fact, we are running out of oil and there is only one commercially-viable liquid fuel alternative," Koehler said.

But historically low gas prices and powerful big oil companies combined to stunt the ethanol industry for years.

"Because of the politics of the oil industry, ethanol has always been viewed as raining on their parade, interfering with their business model," said Koehler.

However, the situation has changed and oil companies now look more favorably on ethanol than other transportation power sources, such as electricity, fuel cells or hydrogen.

In addition, President Bush's energy bill included renewable fuel standards and starting on Jan. 1, it requires a virtual doubling of ethanol fuel use from the current 4 billion gallons to 7-1/2 billion gallons by 2012.

"With $50 oil and up, ethanol is very attractive from a price standpoint," said Koehler.

Ethanol receives a 51 cent per gallon incentive from the U.S. government and today it is selling wholesale for roughly $2 a gallon.

"The actual cost to a refiner is roughly $1.50 and wholesale gasoline is roughly $1.70 or $1.80 today," said Koehler.

And in another sign of the future, he said that, starting next year, the Indy Racing League is converting all Indy racing cars to run on the high-octane alternative.

"Ethanol is racing fuel," he added.

I think it's unprofessional not to pay..I simply state, if you don't bill, I bill directly...

This has only happened once, and I had my check cut same day.  This is business and I will not beg someone to give me my money.  I simply stated it as a fact.

I'll trade you your $88 bill for my $350 bill.
I would love to have such a small bill like that.
I think this subject needs to be dropped.
/
Yes. I know of 9 people who have dropped them
nm
LOL that's what I did when I dropped the lamp on my toe
and broke it.  However, Ms. Siren, if I were you I would not worry so much about the FMLA or the FMLA scammer gal you have working in your department and start worrying about the bigger picture when y'all are here in the jungle with the rest of us.  JMHO.
I think she dropped a period.
As in: I didn't. Thank you very much.
I dropped my CMT about 5 years ago...
when I was actually told by an MTSO that they wouldn't hire me because of it - thought I would expect too much money and that they couldn't afford me. I haven't used CMT after my name or anywhere on my resume since.
My insurance has nothing to do with it, I had just dropped my collision - sm
So I am going through the woman who hit me insurance. They are not going to give me a penny more if I don't fight. I have gotten her up a bit in the #s but it is still ridiculously low. They will cover my medical expenses though I have not signed the forms as yet to grant them access to them, just want to make sure I am not signing something I shouldn't. I mentioned I lost $350 in lost wages alone, plus I've had to take my truck back 3 x so far for their incompetant repair peoples mistakes and things they tried to pull over on me....but I have sharp eyes and caught all the obvious things anyway. I used their services to repair it so I did not pay a penny except I did have to take it to my dealer to have a rattle fixed, they did not tighten/attach my hood back on right. They reimbursed me for that bill, but granted not the 2 hours I was out. I have been saving all my receipts too. Which is why I feel it will be inevitable to get a lawyer involved, hate to do it but then again I did not ask to be hit either.
No. her siblings ran out of money and dropped it for now.

All child molesters should be dropped off .....
in the prison yard of a hard core maximum security prison, filled with lifers who have absolutely nothing to lose, with a sign tattooed on their forehead  that they are child molesters.  Nature would take care of itself.
MT on account has dropped production.

MT tells me they have decided to drop production on an account I share with them.

Between the three of us, we managed okay. Now with her drop in line count, the burden falls of the MT at the end of the shift.  I wanted to tell this MT that she set the pace and now, if they do not continue it, we will have backlog (and we do).  The other two of us are already typing at full throttle.  Our account is going out of TAT.

Has this even happened to any of you and how should I handle this?

I dropped my membership after 13 years.

I dropped my AAMT and CMT 15 years or so ago because
they were not working for our benefit, CMT did not matter to employers and just seemed to be interested in puffing up their own chests and making up education/certification requirements to become an MT which no employer ever took seriously.

I have watched as they have aided the decline of our wages.

I have watched as they have condoned changing of counting methods to scam and deprive MTs of income. Now we don't even get paid for time checking and entering patient information. I have watched as they have aided those sending our work overseas.

Now, upon changing to AHDI, they have done away with chapters. They don't want us to meet and network. It was hard, but I recently reconnected with the chapter I used to be in. I had quit the chapter because, at that time, you had to be a member of AAMT, and I was not/am not willing to support AAMT and what they were doing/did to us. It was hard to find them, because there are no more chapters (except for the few who refuse to die).

Although I really like doing the MT work, hopefully I will be in a completely different profession next year. Although, it is hard to finance retraining in another profession with my wages in the dumps and not being able to cut back on work time because I would not be able to pay my bills.

Unfortunately, the small MT service I worked for was snuffed out by the Indian workers, and the MT job I have now pays a lot less, has done what they can to decimate my wages and is now shipping off as much work as fast as they can to India. I hope I will have been able to complete retraining and left before that time.

But it's nobody's fault but the MTSO that the prices have dropped.
THEY were the ones who started the offshore outsourcing in an attempt to make a bigger profit and get more clients.  Figuring that they could pay Indian transcriptionists 3 or 4 cpl, they could offer the clients a cheaper rate. By doing this, the MTSO changed the field forever into the cut-throat market it is today. The MTSO virtually eliminated the independent transcriptionist from the market who was able to have a few accounts and making a lucrative living and the larger MTSOs are putting the smaller ones out of business.  The MTSOs brought it upon themselves and now everyone in the field is suffering because of it, including the patient.  I feel no pity for them whatsoever.
Transcription companies have already dropped out income into

McDonald's pays (starts!!!) at $9 in our town (in the South, mind you) plus benefits.

It is not worth being somebody's slave anymore, and that's what these MT companies (MQ in particular with their new toy) want us to agree to.

Let them get up off some money and treat us like professionals and I may come back.  I like medicine and have many years of knowledge.

But doctors and nurses aren't working for pennies and I'm finished working for pennies for these companies.

My levels dropped and then went back up. I did not miscarry. nm

Kaiser recently dropped transcription
Even their op reports.  I don't know how you can do touch-screen op reports.  I would like to know how this works if anybody does know out there
Oops......post dropped my same rules & regs. Sorry.

oh geeze - 4-6% wage decrease, I/we should be so lucky!! My pay has dropped (sm)
30% - yes, that's right 30 PERCENT!! - in the last ten years.  This is all due to the new and improved (ahem!) creative ways of now counting the lines and what's included and what's not included.  You can't tell me doctors aren't making money these days.  If there were no money to be made, NOBODY would want to become one!!
super told me to meet lines of 12000 or be dropped to SE
i thought there was only 2 types of employees; statutory or full time
I was thinking with ASR for MQ. They have dropped the line rate 2 cents as of October 1. Now, if
we get a lower line rate starting January 1 based on incentive then I expect the ASR 2 cent reduction will be based on that new line rate so it would actually be lower than it is now assuming they lower our new pay plan rates and I am sure they wont raise them. I wonder how this will play out.
Question re elderly patient being dropped by long-time PCP. sm
My SIL's mother was dropped as a patient by her long-time PCP (who also treats 4 other family members).  The reason was that the elderly woman (upper 80s, status post back surgery and recent hip surgery) had missed too many appointments.  Mind you my SIL always called when her mother could not make an appointment due to physically not being able to keep the appointment.  An office person told my SIL on the QT the real reason was because the doc couldn't get as much reimbursement from insurance on elderly people.  Mind you, this woman has her regular insurance plus Medicare.  What is up with this.  I never heard of such a thing.  Anyone?
That is what I'm trying to do. I've picked up some smaller accounts, dropped the national, an
very hard to cut my hours. It takes time learning the new docs and systems, but I'm sure soon I'll be working less (I pray).

Thanks for your thoughts. I should have never gotten used to the bonus $$.
Ole Bill for me too...

Believe it or not, my bill was $35.
But then my apartment complex pays for AC and heat - yea!
Bill in NY
The rates in NY have gone up too, but we just paid $175 so I feel very lucky after reading some of the amounts.
$440 last bill

I bill

once a month and pay my MT's once a month. Payable upon receipt. I've only had a few times where the check didn't come but that was a small account at the hospital and the bill was going to the wrong department, etc. As a business owner you should be prepared to have SOME cash flow, just for occurrences such as these. I have had accounts miss a payment but when I send the next month's bill, they paid right away. Then again, there were some months when I forgot to send THEIR bill, so fair enough. I have never really been stiffed.

p.s. a contract is only as good as the two people signing it...

Yep, except the game with Bill
was minus the odor and the little white crabs marching around the stogie.
Mine went from $19 to $138 from one bill to the next.
We expect it to go even higher despite using wood heat in the shop now.
Heating bill
I just got socked with an over $500 bill for a fill of propane
That is what I am doing now---I bill at .10 a line BUT -sm
it is a 50 character line. I have no idea if the docs know it or now though as I took it over from another MT. So I do my billing with the just the line counts showing, no character totals, and take it from there, comes out to about a .13 line if by 65 characters. I plan on doing the same when soliciting new accounts as no one wants to go over .10 around here. Yes the line blurs a little here but you gotta do what you gotta do--- if the docs weren't such cheapskates maybe the line would not have to be tweaked or crossed.
You know, it may be because of Bill Cosby!
Doesn't that take you back?

electric bill
Yes, our electric bills have been outrageous. Last month was $199.00, and my new bill came in and is $256.00 also! I too live in California, and we get shafted with the utilities in this state. During winter months my gas bill was as high as $175.00 which is almost five times what it used to be 7 years ago, and my paychecks keep going down in the transcription field!.
how can you *bill for your time* when all that --sm
the MTSO sees is your line count? am I missing something here??? Please explain. thanks
Pt should worry more about the bill
Yuk.
If there is one bill you NEVER ignore

mortgage.  Always, always keep in touch with them even if you don't have the payment.  Your not alone in your dilemma.  The mortage companies have been very flexible and willing to work with payment issues in the past year.  Not sure if the options are still available since they've started foreclosure proceedings, but there are payment plans and now the popular "modification" loans.  Pick up the phone and call them - do it ASAP.  Explain your situation, decreased income, ARM adjustment and see if there is an option to keep you in the home at a payment that is comfortable.  I know many of the lenders are waiting for the exact guidelines on March 4th under the new stimulus plan to come out.  Hopefully this will be the saving grace some are hoping for.

I wish you luck though, I know you're in a touch situation.  I was there too so can truly sympathize.  My loan is currently pending modification, but I first started with a payment plan.  My fingers and toes are crossed.

it fits the bill for me! i'm frugal too :)

FOX NEWS??? BILL O'REILLY???
Great source of "unbiased" news there...lol.
Would rather have Bill and his sexual escapades...
than W with his useless and tragic war anytime...
Does anyone know when the Safe ID bill comes up for vote?
(regarding our medical records being sent out of the country).  I have already emailed my senators and am encouraging everyone to do the same.
Mine was a bill collector
You just get yelled at all day and threatened. What a miserable job, listening to people cry about their problems, etc. I felt bad for them.
I worked beside a bill collector once (sm)
and she was NOT very nice. I really think she enjoyed badgering people on the phone. People cussed her, hung up on her. I used to work insurance billing in the same office and once in a while had to call patient's concerning their accounts. I worked with them on payment arrangements, I mean something is better than nothing. I brought in more than she did.
Anyone getting socked by heating bill yet?
My latest was $88 - hmm...I've almost never had my heat going since I use space heaters. Hmm...odd.
Seriously, I think it's Bill Cosby playing...
mind games with us because I do the same thing with Jello! I never make it, but I can say I have at least 3 or more boxes of the pudding and the Jello at all times. My children often see it and beg me to make it. What's the deal? Really, I think it's a leftover 'Bill Cosby' thing for me. I don't know what makes me buy it, I don't even like it. It's an illness. I'm sure of it.
The doc charged $500 I don't see that as a rip off - the hospital bill though - sm
for $5K is a bit outragous and has nothing to do with the doctor actually. I hope she has insurance.
Bet Hillary's is higher than Bill's!?!?!?!
