 This is a subject I know about all too well.  It is true, by law an employer can only verify dates of employment unless asked for a reference by the employee (in writing).  If the former employer does reveal any other information about the ex-employee, the ex-employer can be in big trouble.  This is the case in any job profession.  There actually are penalties applicable for this.
